Chapter 644: A demon and his plan.
As soon as they all saw the hostage’s face, their courage to attack the demon which had its claws around David’s wind pipe diminished. They all wondered how this had happened.
With all the plans that they had made, how had Azur managed to get his hands on David?
The answer was simple, Azur had made a plan of his own after he realized that he had been cornered by Phoebe. When her heard about her being that grand guardian, he knew that the hunters were not easy prey anymore. Then had proved this by eliminating ninety percent of the forces he had spent two decades cultivating. They even scared off his lackeys, the lesser demons.
So, he had turned to supernatural creatures, paying huge amounts of money, trading favors and doing all it took to acquire their services. He had sneaked them into the founding lane using the black mist as a cover. While they attacked the hunters and caused havoc all over the lane, he overpowered and grabbed his target, David Saxon.
As the husband of the grand guardian, he was all the leverage Azur needed to make her surrender. No matter how powerful she was, she was human and humans were weak. Half of the deals they made with demons were made for the sake of their loved ones.
Azur was certain that Phoebe Mayfair would be no different which was why he had a smirk on his face as he watched the look of despair come over Phoebe’s face.
“Not so tough now are you?” He taunted.
He looked up and laughed, unfurling his obsidian wings and stretching them wide. His talons pierced into David’s throat.
David gasped, struggling futilely against the crushing grip as he struggled for air. Little droplets of blood streamed down from where the demon’s talons pierced his flesh.
“David?” Phoebe cried out, taking a step forward only for Azur’s talons to dig deeper into David’s throat even more.
David gasped, choked and guttural sounds came from his throat. In his eyes was a look of panic and a plea. He could not make out words but he was telling Phoebe not to save him. She had to save herself and their baby and families.
Azur unleashed an otherworldly laugh_a cruel, grating sound that seared their courage like acid. “If anyone of you thinks about doing anything funny I will pluck out little Saxon’s wind pipe, from what I gathered he is a loved one to many especially you grand guardian You wouldn’t want to be the cause of his death now, would you?.” He looked smug which caused Phoebe’s lips to twitch.
Ramiel let out a heavy sigh and pointed at Azur’s left ear. “I can hear you struggling to breath Azur, shattering one of your horns has weakened you and you already know that this war won’t be won. It is useless to struggle.” He began to walk with confidence however everyone else doubted if it was a good idea to make Azur even angrier.
Azur grinned. “If you had permission to touch me Ramiel, I would not be standing here. You would have smote me already, taking half of this city down along with me. Now be a good little rule follower and fuck off.”
“I can’t do that.” Ramiel smirked. “See, you and I both know that it won’t end with Ravana. If you free her then others will follow and earth will become your new home. I am not the only angel circling around here. More of my kind are hovering, waiting for the command to come down.”
A black mist curled around the hunters in the tunnel, twisting and writhing illusions. Suddenly, the tunnel trembled with the sound of bestial growls, creeping closer with every rugged breath. Figured of ghostly torment and shadows of fear incarnate floated in the air.
For some of the humans, the hair at the back of their necks stood up, as beasts conjured by the demon slowly crawled in. The hunters had been prepared for the illusions, but it did not make them anymore dangerous and the beasts felt real enough.
They grabbed their blades and other magic weapons using all of their magic to fight the nightmares. With illusions, in such a small space, guns were not ideal weapons.
“Pheebs, I don’t know your plan but hurry!” Maureen yelled.
“Let him go.” Phoebe hissed at Azur. Her voice carried the weight of a million spells.
“You would not think that I would be stupid enough to come here without back up, do you? Even if I let him go, you won’t be able to reach him in time. If you think that you are smart, you can try it and then watch me take him to hell with me.” Azur loosened his hold around David’s neck.
A fit of hacking coughs whacked David’s body, each gasp thinner than the last. “Whatever he wants do not give it to him.” He spoke, his gaze fixed on his wife.
Star quietly voiced to Phoebe. “He must want the relics that you kept in the space, whatever the out come we are not handing them over.” Her voice was commanding however Phoebe felt otherwise, she was not going to lose David.
“Bring out those relics now!” Azur demanded from the group that barely flinched.
Ramiel shook his head, worried that Phoebe would play along. “Do not fall for this, David is going to die either way because he is poisoned with demon nightshade venom. Even if you save him right now, by the time you come up with a cure after this battle, he will have lost the will to live.” He explained.
Azur’s ragged breaths hissed between his teeth as he morphed into his true form, ropes of saliva splattering on the ground. “The watcher is right about that but grand guardian, little Saxon here has no hope but others do. I will let you go, you are pregnant so think about your child. Do you want it to grow without it’s parents?
Do you want your child to die down here without ever getting a chance to live. I bet she is in there crying, ‘mommy, mommy, save me.’ Choose to be a good mother, save your child.” He was aware of Phoebe’s deepest desire, it was the same just like for any mother.
It seemed to work because Phoebe whimpered. In a jiffy, she brought out the relics, they dangled in one of her hands. “I will only give them to you if you let David go. You already have the heart of a pure one, with the relics and all the other requirements you can release Ravana. The final battle does not have to be today, we can fight another day.” She bargained.
“Mother he knows that these are fakes, see how he is scrutinizing them.” Star warned, Phoebe’s plan of giving Azur fake relics was about to implode.
Azur did notice and it only angered him. “You think that I am playing games? There many people from your family that I can choose from, grand guardian. Let this be my first lesson to you.” He growled. Then he shoved his hand into David’s chest and plucked out the heart like a ripe fruit from a tree branch.
