Chapter 646: Sorrow and happily ever afters.
It was left on everyone to wonder where David and Phoebe had gone. Silence rocked the narrow tunnel, there a faint smell of smoke in the air, the ground was slightly damp, there was no explanation as to why it was damp.
The sound of someone wounded groaning shattered the silence, drawing everyone back to reality.
“Where did they go?” Maureen whispered.
Nobody could answer, nobody knew.
“Zephyra.” Rufus looked around, calling on the spirit of his ancestor but it too was gone. Silence was the only response that he got.
Cillian looked up to call on his own friend that offered him occasional help. “Ramiel.”
Silence.
He waited for a long while, it felt like forever and in that forever, there was no response. Ramiel did not appear, not even a whisper was heard.
“I knew we could not trust the angel.” Maureen punched the air.
She marched into the crypt where Ravana was once kept. All that was left were chains, a very big slab stone into which thousands of runes had been imbued. The room smelled like fresh flowers and sage.
Maureen walked back out and she looked at Edward that was kneeling at the place where Phoebe and David had vanished. He looked like as soulless doll, his eyes were blank.
“What do we do Edward?” She approached him and touched his shoulder.
Edward’s eyes just remained on the ground and then he suddenly started digging with his bare hand. He wanted to use both hands but one of his arms was broken and useless currently.
“Edward please, stop.” Maureen pulled him away.
He pushed her away, snarling like an angry wild animal and he tried to dig again but she pulled him back, ignoring his desperate screams. Cillian walked over to them, and he slapped Edward on the cheek.
“Son, you need to come back to reality. No amount of digging is going to help you find her. What we need to do right now is find out where she went. We all saw it; Phoebe was talking to something and then it pulled them down. She went with David’s body. I guess that she is trying to find a way to bring him back to life.” He dug his hand into Edward’s shoulder. “The grand guardian can take care of herself, we need to take care of others that are here right now, those that need our help.”
He turned Edward to look back at all the guardians that had been injured. The ones losing blood and groaning in pain.
“We don’t know Phoebe’s fate, but we know that there are brothers and sisters of ours that are laying dead on the ground right now.” Cillian’s voice broke.
He pointed Edward Rufus’s way. Rufus had already returned to the tunnel where the fight with the shadows and nightmares had gone down. He was cradling Orson’s body in his arms, sobbing like a child.
Edward clenched his jaw; he controlled his labored breathing as much as he could. The war was over; they had to clean up and send off the hunters that had died.
So, they staggered through the wreckage, rifling through the rubble and damp ground for survivors. They transported the survivors and bodies to the council building which was also a wreck.
More hunters were also rifling through bodies, separating the supernatural creatures from the humans that had fallen and the hunters that had not survived. They worked tirelessly, transported their dead back to the academy.
The human soldiers were also gathering their wounded and counting their dead. In this battle, they had lost more people than the hunters.
Alton could not believe that he had survived. He was sitting on a rock, pouring medicine that academy had provided them with, on left hand which had almost been entirely clawed off by a werewolf.
A young woman from the Spellcaster family approached him and she put down a medicine bag. She chanted a spell, purified the poison in his blood and stitched up his wound.
“You are a witch.” he said to her.
She nodded.
“Have you lost someone in this battle?” he asked her.
She picked up her medicine bag and looked out at all the bodies that were being transported out. “I have lost many people.”
Whether they were ordinary humans or special ones, there was no difference. All of those that had fallen in this battle were her people. She moved on to help another wounded soldier.

Members of the founding families did not stay behind closed doors. When they heard the bells which signaled that it was over, they came out of the safety of their gates and mansions.
They drove out to help as much as they could, others started searching for their loved ones that had joined the fight. Loud cries, sniffles, whimpers and sorrow filled the lane.
At night, the dead hunters and guardians were all given final rites. They were purified, talismans were stuck on their bodies, tattoos protecting them from possession were drawn on their flesh and last prayers were made for them. They were put in enchanted coffins and sent off to the families for burial.
When it was over, the Mayfair’s and Saxon’s sat as one family, near the river in the academy. They shared another untold loss which could not be explained, the disappearance of Phoebe and David.
Miranda and Jennie were among those that were crying nonstop. Orson’s mother Selena had fainted and yet nobody had moved her. Shanna was also one of those whose sadness was inconsolable, she had cried so much that she was about to pass out. Most of the women were trying to keep in their cries and the men, they just seemed angry. Nobody could bring themselves to ask a question about where the couple had gone or if they were alive.
They could not even bring themselves to celebrate this victory. Maybe in future, they would but now. Now, only sorrow existed.
In the midst of the darkness and sadness which seemed endless, Arrow showed up with two soul lamps, one belonged to David and the other Phoebe. Phoebe’s soul lamp was bright, David’s faint, flickering like a tiny flame fighting for life in a windstorm.
“They are alive,” he assured the two families. He gave them a weak smile, one that had no place in a land of sorrow. “I know it makes no sense to say this now, but it must be said. This victory matters. We should celebrate our fallen and make monuments for them. Their sacrifice matters.”

In Elythion, in the same tower where they had rescued Cillian, Phoebe was sitting beside a bed, holding the hands of David whose eyes had just flickered open. She was sobbing, happily but also sadly.
“You are alive, David, you are alive.”
David felt the faint beating in his heart. A heart that had been ripped out of his chest. He wanted to take a look and see his chest, but he found that he could not move.
“Pheebs…how am I not dead? Or is this the afterlife? Please don’t me that you died too.” He whispered the question.
She laughed through her tears. “We are alive David, we got lucky. And we had magic on our side too, great magic.”
David was relieved, as long as demons were not involved.
“Star?” He whispered a one-word question.
“She survived too; she is sleeping. I won’t hear from her until I give birth.” She answered.
She stood up and brushed her lips against his forehead and then his lips. “I love you, David Saxon.” She cried, touching her forehead against his. As her tears fell on his face, she said it again. “I love you so much and I am such a fool and when I had your heart in my hands, I regretted not saying it every day. I should have said it as much as you said it to me. I should not…”
“Shhh!” He spoke gently. Strangely, he started laughing. It had taken his heart being ripped out of his chest for her to give him all of her heart. “This adds a whole new angle to love confessions which include promises of putting my heart in your hands.”
She laughed as well. Her entire being danced with pure joy. He had no idea how happy she was right now. They were alive, all three of them had made it out.
Phoebe kissed his cheeks, and she brushed her lips against his again, cupping his face with her eyes closed shut.
David wished he had strength to hold her and reassure her that it was over, and they were ready for the happily ever after phase of their life. “I love you Phoebe and I promise that I will be devoted to you and our children for the rest of my life. If I ever go back on my vows, you can take my heart.”
Phoebe kissed him to shut him up. There would be no taking of heart jokes in their house.
