Reborn with a Necromancer System - Chapter 65
Chapter 65: Orlin’s Request Chapter 65: Orlin’s Request Kai sat across from Orlin in the dimly lit chamber.
Orlin waved his hand and the flames in the fireplace erupted, lighting up the entire room.
The weight of the conversation pressing down on Kai’s shoulders like an anvil.
The old necromancer had lived for over a thousand years, and now, finally, the moment had come to put his tormented existence to an end.
But before that, Kai needed answers.
“I have questions,” Kai said, his voice steady, but beneath it lay a tremor of uncertainty.
“Before we do this, I want to know the truth.
All of it.” Orlin exhaled, the eerie blue glow of his eyes dimming slightly as he nodded.
“I expected as much.
Ask.” Kai took a breath.
“First…
why?
What really made you betray all the necromancers?” Orlin chuckled dryly, shaking his head.
“Because I was tired, boy.
Tired of existing.
Of watching generations of necromancers rise and fall, of outliving students, friends… lovers.
Even wives.” His skeletal fingers tapped the arm of his chair.
“But that was only part of it.
The god I met, the one who offered me my so-called ‘release’, swore that necromancers would only lose their ability to perform magic.
That was the deal.
I didn’t sign up for an extermination.” Kai’s fists clenched.
“And yet, after that, the variants were…” Orlin sighed.
“Yes.
The puppets of the gods hunted them down like monsters, treated no differently, if not worse, than the necromancers.
They were seen as unnatural, an abomination in the eyes of the gods and their worshippers.
The moment necromancers lost their power, variants became the next target.” Kai hesitated before asking, “Were all the variants killed?” The necromancer leaned forward, his blue eyes burning.
“Yes.
Every single one that could be found.
But by then, hundreds had already formed bonds, had children.
The gods deemed tracking down hybrid descendants too much effort, hoping their bloodlines would dilute over generations.” Orlin suddenly laughed, a dry, rattling sound.

“And yet here you are, standing before me.
Their plan failed.
You are proof of that.” Kai swallowed hard.
It wasn’t the first time someone had implied he wasn’t entirely human, but hearing it like this… it felt heavier, more real.
He moved on.
“How old are you?” “In your time?
1,083 years,” Orlin said without hesitation.
“Older than empires.
Older than myths.
I have seen the rise and fall of civilisations and have long since stopped caring.” “In my time?” “You’ll discover that after you complete your task.
Just don’t leave the city before exploring the manor.
You might regret it.
Now, i have a question for you…” “I mean…
I was supposed to be asking you questions, but go ahead.” “Are you not from this world?” Orlin leaned forward, as though this was the most important question to him in that moment.
“That-that’s right.
I guess there’s no point in hiding it from a dying man.” “I had my suspicions.
My master also said he came from a place called Nihon.
Do you know it?” “I don’t believe so.
Maybe he came from a different world?” “Perhaps.
All I know is that he mentioned coming to this world with two friends.
They were all extremely powerful, but his friends were killed by the gods after saving the world from disaster millennia ago.” Kai nodded, absorbing the weight of Orlin’s words before pressing forward.
“Who was your master?” A flicker of something, pride perhaps, crossed Orlin’s glowing eyes.
“The first necromancer.
E¸®o¸®b¸®r¸®a¸®n¸®d.
A being who lived for over 5,000 years.
He was powerful enough to slay gods, Kai.
He fought them when they came for our kind, and he brought down two before they finally cast him into oblivion.” ‘What was that name?
It’s like something corrupted it?
Is it another language?
I don’t understand…
Didn’t the system mention something about that when I was given my necromancer specialisation?’ Kai’s breath ceased.
A necromancer who had slain gods.
The idea was staggering.
Unreal.
Gods, at least in his world, were beings that controlled reality itself, and the one god he’d met in this world had power that could defeat a thousand of him all at once.
He hesitated before his final question.
“And… what’s under your hood?” For a moment, Orlin said nothing.
Then, with a slow, deliberate motion, he lifted the hood of his tattered robe.
Kai had expected something monstrous, but what he saw was… simple.
A skull, weathered and cracked in places, yet somehow still expressive.
His glowing blue eyes flickered within the sockets, the only remnants of his once-human visage.
“It has been centuries since I resembled a man,” Orlin murmured.
“This is all that remains.” Kai nodded.
There was no revulsion in him-only understanding.
“Are we ready, then?” Orlin asked, lowering his hood.
Kai steeled himself.
“Yes.
When do we start?” Orlin tapped his cane on the ground.
A flash of teleportation magic engulfed them, and in an instant, they were elsewhere.
The chamber they arrived in was vast, a basement-like structure covered in intricate sigils.
The air was thick with raw mana, humming with restrained power.
A heavy steel door loomed at the far end.
“Where are we?” Kai asked.
“Below the manor,” Orlin said.
“If we succeed, you can leave through that door.” Kai’s brow furrowed.
“Why here?” Orlin sighed.
“Because if you fail, the explosion of mana will be catastrophic.
Even with all my preparations, it could still level half of Mirth.
And if I somehow survive… well, I suppose I’ll be waiting another five hundred years for another student.
So, try not to fail.” Kai let out a nervous chuckle.
“No pressure.” Orlin leaned heavily on his cane.
“My soul will resist.
It will fight back.
I have had centuries to fortify it.” “Of course it will,” Kai muttered.
“But this time, instead of merely destroying my soul, I want you to try something different.” “Something different?” “Nothing bad.
Just an additional request.
I’ll guide you through it when the time comes.” Kai considered this, then nodded.
“Alright.” Orlin raised a skeletal hand.
” Good.
Since your life essence will not be enough for this task, I will lend you mine.” The chamber trembled as Orlin’s mana surged.
Wind roared through the room, swirling in an almost sentient tempest.
He reached out and touched Kai’s forehead.
[Life Essence Maximum Temporarily Increased: 109,431/109,431] Kai staggered under the sudden flood of power.
“Holy shit!” Orlin exhaled, sagging to the ground.
“Ooooph.
That was just about all I had left.” Kai looked at him, wide-eyed.
“You’re really powerful, aren’t you?” Orlin chuckled weakly.
“And you’re only realizing that now?
Stupid disciple.
Before the gods severed my connection to necromancy, I wielded millions of life essence.
But this… this should be enough.” For a long moment, the chamber was silent, save for the distant hum of the sigils.
“We should begin…” Orlin said softly.
