Chapter 76: Political game
Many things in this world were not independent of Neonidas’ former world. After all, the person who had essentially created or at least imagined this world was Neonidas’ ex-girlfriend. The fact that men held more power in this world despite both men and women having the potential to become incredibly strong mages stemmed from this reality.
In other words, the traditions—or at least the old traditions—from Neonidas’ past life existed in this world. Therefore, a woman’s marriage could be viewed as a kind of transaction. Especially if it was between two dukes, it would imply mutual benefits. Of course, in this case, it was not a marriage but the purchase of a concubine. However, this did not mean that interests were not prioritized.
“As I mentioned before, I wish to establish better relations, perhaps even a form of alliance, with your duchy. Thus, Duke Neonidas, I would like to strengthen our ties through my daughter, Cassandra.”
Maximilian Valen’s words made Neonidas ponder for a few seconds. “I wouldn’t say no to that. After all, it would be an honor to have an esteemed lord like yourself as an ally. However, is there a specific desire you wish to achieve through this relationship?”
The language of noble etiquette was one where two individuals expressed their wishes as politely and indirectly as possible. This was why Neonidas and Maximilian spoke this way.
“Actually, the only thing I want from you is your goodwill. When I look at you, I can see that you will achieve great things in the future. Forming a friendship with a man as respectable and talented as yourself is the best decision I could make. But…”
At that moment, Neonidas paid closer attention, expecting to discern at least part of the cunning man’s true intentions following the “but.”
“But, of course, engaging in trade agreements with you would be beneficial for both sides. As you know, the lands I govern are only suitable for agriculture during the summer, but that’s not sufficient. I would especially like to establish some agricultural agreements with you. I’ve also heard that you’ve established many forges, and since I possess the largest iron mines in the empire, engaging in barter trade could benefit both duchies.”
As Neonidas carefully listened to Maximilian Valen’s words, he couldn’t help but admire the man’s intelligence and diplomatic prowess. Because he still successfully managed to hide his true intentions.
This kind of proposal prioritized mutual benefits for both sides. However, with the analytical thinking skills he had brought from his past life, Neonidas decided to delve deeper to uncover the man’s true intentions.
“Agricultural agreements and barter trade would undoubtedly benefit both sides,” Neonidas began. “However, before establishing such a partnership, I would like to clarify the details. For instance, which products do you plan to focus on trading? And what other advantages can you offer me through this agreement?”
Maximilian, as if prepared for the questions, responded without hesitation.
“First of all, it would be a great honor for me to cooperate with a powerful and forward-thinking duke like yourself. As for barter trade, wheat, barley, and corn are crucial agricultural products for us. Our need for these increases, particularly in winter. In return, I offer to exclusively provide you and your designated merchants with our iron ores, which could further strengthen your ironworking sector.”
As Neonidas listened intently to the man’s detailed and professional explanation, he maintained a neutral expression. Maximilian’s presentation was impressive, but Neonidas analyzed every word to determine if there was a hidden agenda.
Maximilian continued. “Of course, I don’t want to limit our relationship to trade alone. To deepen our bond, I propose that my daughter Cassandra serve you personally. She is a highly educated lady with literary knowledge, musical talents, and diplomatic skills. Her presence at your side could provide advantages both personally and politically.”
Neonidas realized that Maximilian’s proposal was intricately crafted. Offering Cassandra as a concubine was not only a personal gesture but also a strategic move that could pave the way for larger agreements in the future. Neonidas knew this offer was merely a step for Maximilian to strengthen his own position. Yet, for some reason, he felt the mask this man wore was thicker than it appeared.
Neonidas looked at Cassandra for a moment. He thought about the this woman’s powers in the novel. In reality, she was one of the few characters strong enough to potentially kill Allea. Of course, this was only a potential scenario. At present, she was weak enough to die from a mere snap of Allea’s fingers.
If Duke Maximilian intended to control him through his daughter, it was utterly impossible. But only Neonidas knew this.
Zalira carefully observed her brother. In the past, she could easily understand what he was thinking from his expressions, but now she had no idea. She then looked at Cassandra. She truly was beautiful. Among the nobility, she was known as one of the six beauties of the empire. Many women often debated over tea whether Cassandra or Allea was more beautiful.
Zalira then glanced at her own body. She used to receive compliments as well, but since she had no interest in men or sexuality in general, she had neglected herself. In fact, she had subjected her body to a kind of punishment. While working at the Imperial Academy, she barely slept a few hours, consumed coffee constantly, and paid little attention to her diet. Zalira now deeply regretted this attitude.
What Zalira didn’t know was that, despite neglecting herself, she was still beautiful enough to rival the most stunning women in the empire.
“I accept.”
Suddenly, Neonidas’ words broke the silence in the room. He had thought long and hard before finally announcing his decision. His tone was neither completely cold nor entirely warm; it reflected a perfect diplomatic balance.
“Cassandra’s presence by my side could be an excellent start to strengthening our relationship. Additionally, I gladly accept your proposals regarding trade agreements. However, we will need to arrange a more comprehensive meeting in the coming days to discuss the details.”
A faint smile appeared on Maximilian’s face. He was pleased that his proposal had been accepted, but Neonidas’ emphasis on “details” in his last sentence briefly altered his expression. However, he quickly replaced his mask.
“Of course, Duke Neonidas. I am always open to discussing the details further. I entrust my daughter Cassandra to your care. I am confident that she will not merely serve as an ornament in your duchy, but will prove to be a valuable helpful for you.”
Cassandra had listened to the conversations with cold composure. Her father’s decision to make her part of such a bargain did not fill her with pride. However, she had no choice but to comply.
“Lady Cassandra, do you approve of this union as well?”
Neonidas’ question brought a new silence to the room. Cassandra hesitated for a moment. She glanced at her father, then at Neonidas. Her emotions didn’t show on her face, but inside, a storm of anger and helplessness raged. Finally, she spoke in a polite yet distant tone:
“I am a Valen, Duke Neonidas. I remain loyal to my father’s decisions. If this alliance will benefit our family and lands, I will not hesitate to fulfill my duty.”

Cassandra’s words carried both acceptance and an air of detachment. Neonidas noticed her demeanor and reminded himself that, despite understanding her situation, everyone in this game was playing their own cards.
“Your determination and loyalty to your family are truly admirable, Lady Cassandra,” Neonidas replied with a faint smile. “I am confident that having you by my side will not only strengthen me but also enhance the power of my duchy.”
Zalira observed the entire conversation in silence, trying to discern whether there was any sincerity in Cassandra’s words. However, the young woman’s composure veiled her true feelings. Deep down, Zalira was certain Cassandra had not accepted this willingly. Still, she could not interfere with Neonidas’ political maneuvers.
Maximilian seemed satisfied with his daughter’s obedient attitude and moved to conclude the discussion. “Duke Neonidas, I have no doubt that my daughter will be a valuable companion to you. Additionally, I propose we hold a meeting next week to discuss the details of our trade agreements. It will allow us to solidify both our relations and our alliance.”
“Of course. Until then, everything necessary will be arranged to help Lady Cassandra adapt to my duchy. Now, if you’ll excuse me.”
Maximilian slightly bowed before leaving the room. “I entrust my daughter to your care, Duke Neonidas,” he said.
As Maximilian and his retinue exited, Cassandra hesitated for a moment. Her gaze briefly flickered to Neonidas, then to Zalira, as if trying to decipher their thoughts. But she said nothing, merely lowering her head and walking silently toward the door.
When the door closed, Zalira was the first to break the silence. “Did you truly accept this? You know Cassandra’s power, don’t you? If she’s been trained as her father claims, she won’t just be a consort. She can give you much more, but also take far more away from you.”
Neonidas took a deep breath and rose from his seat, walking toward the window. gazing out at the view, “nothing is ever as it seems. I am well aware of Cassandra’s strength and potential. But power depends solely on how it is wielded. For now, I plan to use her abilities for the benefit of my duchy. Yet, I will not neglect to establish a mechanism of control in the process.”
As Zalira admired her brother’s composure, she couldn’t ignore the growing unease within her. Neonidas had plunged into a political game, but only time would reveal the true cost of this gamble. Despite being an atheist, Zalira found herself silently praying for her brother’s success for the first time in her life.
