- Chapter 128 - Chapter 128 The Story of the Past
Chapter 128: The Story of the Past Chapter 128: The Story of the Past “Ugh, what the hell is this?!
Where are we, Nao?
And why isn’t Vaelgorath dead yet?!
Hey, you bastard, what kind of dirty trick are you pulling this time?!” Envi, completely bewildered by the situation, shouted at Vaelgorath.
“Calm down, idiot!
You’re a system, aren’t you?
You should be better at analyzing this than I am!
Vaelgorath has already lost.
This is just his final moment.
He wants to deliver an important message, so shut up and listen…” I tried to calm Envi down.
Eventually, he stopped ranting and let Vaelgorath speak.
“Hah… You two really are like two sides of the same coin.
Different, yet the same.
Hahaha…
Very well, listen closely.
This is my final message to you, the heroes who have defeated me.” Vaelgorath’s voice was oddly calm, almost like an old man telling a story to his grandchildren.
He then began recounting his origins-how he was one of the five Unique Monsters that existed in this world.
These beings were natural disasters given form, harbingers of destruction, calamities of life, the end of the world itself.
Many names had been given to them, each more terrifying than the last.
Yet, Vaelgorath himself had no memory of how he and the other Unique Monsters came into existence.
Or perhaps, his memories had been sealed away to protect that secret.
However, there was one thing he knew for certain-he and the others had been created for one sole purpose: to kill the gods and bring ruin to this world.
“Gods, you say?!
Just how long have you existed in this world?!” I asked, stunned by his revelation.
“Hmmm… If you must know, I have been here since the era when the gods descended upon this land and built civilization alongside humanity.
Until the war against the demons… and the god (???).” Vaelgorath suddenly fell silent.
It was as if something prevented him from uttering that god’s name.
“Hey, what do you mean by ‘god (???)’?
I saw the same thing in Vorx’s status!
That god placed a curse upon demons, forcing them to forever hate and destroy humanity.
Follow new episodes on the "N0vel1st.c0m".
Just who is he?!” I pressed further, unable to contain my curiosity.
“That’s right!
That damn god must’ve played a major role in the war between humans and demons!” Envi spat out in frustration.
“…I cannot tell you.” Vaelgorath’s voice was heavy.
“More precisely, I don’t know.
My memories are sealed beyond that point.” Vaelgorath continued his tale, revealing that the Unique Monsters had existed since the age of gods.
They had been created with a singular mission-to slay the gods themselves.
And so, 3,000 years ago, a war erupted between the gods and the Unique Monsters, with the traitorous God of Darkness aiding the monsters.
It was a cataclysmic battle that nearly annihilated the world.
The gods, despite their divine power, were overwhelmed, their numbers dwindling from the hundreds to just a handful.
The Unique Monsters, however, were ultimately defeated and erased from existence.
But in the end, it was the intervention of the enigmatic [Goddess ???] and the Almighty One that turned the tide.
Their divine might was beyond anything the world had ever seen, obliterating the Unique Monsters and vanquishing the God of Darkness.
As I listened to his story, I asked him about this Goddess and the Almighty One, but Vaelgorath still couldn’t remember.
The only thing he could describe was that they were the very “core” of all divine power.
But then, Vaelgorath dropped a bombshell.
“All the Unique Monsters, including myself, were destroyed in that war…
all except for one-Canis, The One Who Conquers the Shadow.” “WHAT?!
CANIS?!” Both Envi and I shouted in disbelief.
“That’s right.
He was the strongest among us.
When we fell and returned to god (???), Canis alone remained in this world and sealed himself away.
He only emerges once every hundred years, becoming a living legend of calamity.
That’s why… I can’t believe you managed to defeat Canis.
Even the gods themselves couldn’t do it.” Vaelgorath’s tone was dead serious-he wasn’t joking.
I quickly explained our encounter.
“We met Canis at the Shadow Wolf stronghold.
There were two demons attempting a ritual to resurrect the Demon King, opening the Gate of Gehenna…
and Canis emerged from within.
We fought desperately, and somehow-by some miracle-I managed to defeat him.” Vaelgorath’s eyes widened.
“Gate of Gehenna…?
That place was where Canis sealed himself away… There’s no way mere demons could have accessed it.
Something isn’t right.
Canis isn’t the type to let anyone disturb him while he’s sealed.
And even more baffling-Canis lost to weaklings like you?
That’s impossible.
There must be a reason behind it.” He was utterly convinced.
Then, after a moment of deep thought, Vaelgorath spoke once more.
“Listen carefully, you two… Canis must have had his own plans.
He deliberately lost to you and passed on his legacy-Kagegiri.
That weapon is a powerful manifestation of Canis himself.
He didn’t give you that power without a reason.
But what that reason is… I do not know.” Envi and I fell silent.
Deep down, we both knew-we had only won against Canis by sheer luck.
But then, out of nowhere, Envi clenched his fists and growled, “I don’t care what that damn wolf’s plan was.
He killed Rosan.
I will never forgive him.
If I ever see him again, I WILL KILL HIM!” His voice trembled with emotion as he remembered Rosan, who had fallen in battle against Canis.
I understood how he felt.
I, too, couldn’t forget Rosan’s sacrifice-how he had protected me from Canis’ attack.
No matter what motives Canis had in giving me his power, I could never forgive him either.
“KUHAHAHA… I see… That’s good.
I like that spirit of yours.” Vaelgorath let out a deep, raspy laugh.
“Defeat all the Unique Monsters in this world.
Right now, I may be the only one who has awakened, but sooner or later, god (???) will revive the others, and together with the Demon King, they will bring ruin upon this world.” His words carried an ominous certainty.
Then, with a smirk, he looked straight at us.
“Naoki von Blackmore… and you, the floating box of a system (Envi), defeat the remaining Unique Monsters.
I believe that once they are all gone, you will uncover the truth of this world…” As he spoke, cracks began to spread across his soul.
His existence was crumbling.
But before he completely vanished, he spoke once more-and what he said shook us to the core.
“Ah, I nearly forgot… Let me finish my story.
When the Unique Monsters, demons, and the Dark God were defeated by the gods, something terrifying happened.
God (???) descended upon the earth and unleashed a devastating power that wiped out countless gods.
A great battle ensued-the Goddess (???), the leader of the gods and the representative of the Almighty One, fought against god (???), the leader of the demons, Unique Monsters, and the God of Darkness.” Vaelgorath’s expression turned grim.
“The result… was unexpected.
God (???) triumphed over Goddess (???), shattering the unity of the gods and leaving them weakened, unable to manifest in this world again.
In her final moments, Goddess (???) sacrificed herself to seal away god (???), before her very existence was torn apart into countless fragments and erased from this world.” I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.
A being stronger than the Demon King… something that even surpassed the gods themselves… this wasn’t possible.
“Tch… That bastard of a god!
I swear I’ll beat the crap out of him!” Envi shouted, seething with rage.
Vaelgorath let out another laugh at our reactions.
“That is the truth.
But there is no need to worry.
God (???) is sealed for eternity and can never descend upon this world again.
The only thing he can do is unleash the Unique Monsters.
That is why you must do as I say-defeat them all.” “You don’t need to tell me.
If those damn monsters threaten the people I care about, I’ll destroy every last one of them.” I clenched my fist, my resolve unwavering.
“And if you ever come back to life, I’ll take you down again, Vaelgorath!
For all the lives you’ve taken-including Professor Alden!” I pointed my fist at him, challenging him even as he faded away.
Vaelgorath let out a final, hearty laugh.
“KUHAHAHA!
I like you, boy.
I would love to fight you again… but it seems that’s impossible.
My consciousness and power are being reclaimed by god (???).
I don’t know what he’s planning… but be careful.” “What?!
Ugh… Damn it!
I just hope that bastard isn’t trying to break free.
If that happens, we’ll have to fight not only the Demon King… but god (???) himself!” Envi spat in frustration.
“Calm down, Envi.
No matter what happens… we won’t lose.” I reassured him, and after a moment, he nodded.
“You’re right, Nao-er, I mean, Naoki.
No matter if it’s the Demon King or that damn god himself-we will win!” Now, only fragments of Vaelgorath’s soul remained.
Before he completely disappeared, I asked him one final question.
“Vaelgorath… tell me.
Why are you telling us all of this?
You are our enemy.
You didn’t have to reveal any of this.
What’s your reason?” For a moment, he was silent.
Then, with a tired chuckle, he replied.
“A reason, huh?
I suppose… I’m just tired.
I simply wish to rest… to disappear from this world.
Controlling time itself… it is not a great power.
It is a curse.
I have been alone for far too long.
But you… you gave me an enjoyable fight.
And for that… I suppose that is enough for me to accept my end.” Slowly, he closed his eyes.
And with his final breath, he spoke his last words.
“KUHAHAHA… Farewell, Naoki von Blackmore.
Hero of the future.
As a parting gift, I shall leave you something.
Accept it… and find the truth of this world…” And with that-Vaelgorath’s soul faded from existence.
….
Suddenly, my consciousness snapped back-along with Envi’s.
We were back in the dungeon chamber.
The cold, damp air of the underground labyrinth filled my lungs as I took a deep breath.
The eerie silence of the dungeon was now deafening without Vaelgorath’s overwhelming presence.
Then, in front of me, a series of notifications popped up.
