Chapter 171: Tears the Heavens Never Heard

Envi and I were shocked when we saw the notification saying that Canis was one of the rewards we had earned. He was to become a familiar—a summoned creature that forms a contract with a human and grants them power proportional to their level.

An example of a familiar is the Phoenix currently owned by Freya. I’ve also heard that each of the hero families in Braveheart has their own familiars. For instance, Winterfall has a legendary stag, Flamemore has both a phoenix and the fire dragon Ignis, Stormheim commands a lightning tiger, Starlight has a kind of celestial horse, and the Braveheart Royal Family possesses a winged lion—the kingdom’s very symbol.

The strange thing is that my own family, the Blackmore hero family, not only lacks a Dark Magic user but also doesn’t have any familiar or legendary beast like the others. Because of this, we’re considered the weakest among the hero families.

However, Blackmore is often associated with Canis, because every 50 years, Canis rampages through the Blackmore region—and we’re the ones who face him. Other than the first Patriarch, Hiro von Blackmore, no one has ever been able to seal him. So, in every generation since, we’ve kept losing to Canis.

Many members of the Blackmore family have died fighting him in the past, until finally, Canis’s rage cooled, and he re-sealed himself in the realm of darkness. But that tradition has now ended—because I defeated Canis.

Due to this history between Blackmore and Canis, our family uses the emblem of the dark wolf—to symbolize our struggle against him.

But now, history has changed… Canis, that damned disaster-bringer, is going to become my familiar? The Blackmore family is going to receive as a familiar the very beast that slaughtered so many of our people? It was hard to accept.

That’s what was going through my mind as I listened to the God of Darkness offering Canis as my familiar.

Envi immediately shouted, “This is ridiculous! That damned wolf killed so many of the Blackmore family in the past! He even helped slaughter the gods of Cosmoria! I can’t accept this!”

He raised his katana again and pointed it at Canis.

“UWAAAA!” Canis ran away in a panic, hiding behind the God of Darkness.

Envi still looked ready to strike, but I yelled out to stop him.

“Stop, Envi!”

“Nao… how can you let this happen? He killed Rosan! We have to avenge her!” Envi looked furious, his eyes blazing.

“That’s exactly why we need to grow stronger—so we never lose anyone we love again!”

Hearing my words, Envi froze. His body trembled as he held back his rage.

“Listen carefully, Envi. If Canis becomes our familiar, we’ll gain incredible power. Power strong enough to defeat the Demon King and even the Outer God! This is our chance to become strong!” I snapped at him.

“Rosan died because of him… aren’t you angry, NAO?” Envi glared at me.

“Of course I’m angry… Rosan meant the world to me.” I said that with sadness in my voice and tears in my eyes.

“…” Envi was silent as he looked at me.

“That’s why, Envi… we have to protect the ones we love, even if that means using Canis’s power. We must never let our loved ones die again!” I declared with unwavering resolve.

“Nao… you… Tch! I hate to admit it, but you’re right. Sorry for not thinking clearly.” Envi finally sheathed his katana, his fury fading.

Suddenly, the God of Darkness, who had been watching us the entire time, spoke, “Nao is right. Canis will grant you great power, because… he is a fragment of my own strength.”

Envi and I were stunned to hear that.

“I created Canis… he was like a son to me. He used to be obedient and not bloodthirsty like he is now,” said the God of Darkness, his face full of sorrow.

“What do you mean? Explain everything to us…” I pressed him.

The God of Darkness then began telling us his story—how he betrayed the other gods and sided with the Outer God. He claimed to have received a vision from the Almighty One, the supreme god, that both Cosmoria and Aetheria would be destroyed by an invasion from the Outer God.

In the prophecy, the Outer God would gain a perfect physical vessel, making him invincible to mortals and gods alike. The only way to stop this was to sever the connection between the Outer God and the vessel he would possess—the Demon King.

Envi and I started to grasp the link between the Outer God and the Demon King. We listened carefully as the God of Darkness unraveled the mystery.

Suddenly, a system notification appeared:

[Goddess Vision Activated!]

I was transported into a dark room where a massive screen played out a vision. It felt just like the time I saw a flashback of my life on Earth—back when I almost died facing Canis for the first time.

But this time, I wasn’t alone. Envi sat beside me.

I straightened up in my seat, paying close attention to what was unfolding.

…

The God of Darkness was the only god capable of severing the link between the Outer God and the Demon King. But to do so, he needed to confront the Outer God directly. That’s why he devised a plan to infiltrate the Outer God’s ranks, even if it meant being labeled a traitor by the gods.

He didn’t play the villain to destroy Cosmoria and Aetheria—but to protect them. Still, the other gods turned against him and cursed him, banishing him from Cosmoria forever.

Once he faced the Outer God’s soul directly, he tried to defeat him using only Canis. A fierce battle broke out—God of Darkness and Canis versus the Outer God. They came close to severing the connection to the Demon King, which could have delayed the world’s destruction.

But in the end, the Outer God’s destructive power proved overwhelming. Instead of being killed, the God of Darkness and Canis were corrupted—manipulated by the Outer God’s influence until they could no longer control themselves.

It was a catastrophe. The Outer God then sent the God of Darkness, Canis, and four of his Unique Monsters to attack Cosmoria and Aetheria. This marked the beginning of the war between the gods.

Back then, the God of Darkness could do nothing but scream internally as he slaughtered his own divine siblings. The same happened to Canis—his personality was crushed by the Outer God’s influence, turning him into a bloodthirsty, savage monster. That’s why Canis became so brutal in his slaughter of the gods.

The God of Darkness couldn’t do anything back then—until the Forgotten Goddess stepped in and defeated both him and Canis. Canis fled to the realm of darkness, and the God of Darkness sealed him in Aetheria in order to save him. Afterward, the God of Darkness fled back to the Outer God, but the Forgotten Goddess pursued him, and at that moment, she finally shattered the Outer God’s manipulation and freed the God of Darkness from his control.

At that point, the God of Darkness chose to help the Forgotten Goddess. The two of them fought the Outer God together. A fierce battle ensued and continued for years without end. But finally, the God of Darkness found an opening and cut the connection between the Outer God and the Demon King—he severed the invisible threads that linked them.

This enraged the Outer God, who then unleashed his full power to try and destroy the two of them. The God of Darkness and the Forgotten Goddess resisted with all their strength, but they were overwhelmed. Eventually, the Outer God launched a soul-shattering attack, prompting the God of Darkness to shield the Forgotten Goddess, causing his soul to shatter into a thousand fragments and scatter across realms and worlds, like dust blown by the wind.

Before vanishing, he apologized to the Forgotten Goddess, embraced her, and whispered something I couldn’t hear. Then he disappeared in her arms.

The Forgotten Goddess was heartbroken by the God of Darkness’s death, yet she continued to fight the Outer God with the last of her strength, down to her final drop of blood.

Moved by her determination, the Outer God decided to toy with her. He offered the Forgotten Goddess another chance to defy him—but only if she could collect the scattered pieces of her own soul across the world. The Outer God cursed her to be forgotten by all humans and the remaining gods, though she herself would retain all her memories. She would remember who she was and strive to rise again to challenge him in the future.

This was unlike the soul fragments of the God of Darkness, who completely lost his memories.

The Forgotten Goddess could do nothing but accept the curse. It was the only chance to fight the Outer God again. Even though the path ahead would be long and exhausting.

Eventually, the Forgotten Goddess was destroyed by the Outer God, her soul also breaking into a thousand fragments.

Before completely fading away, she said, “You’ve underestimated us too much, oh Outer God… I… no, we will crawl back from the bottom and defeat you!”

“This is merely the beginning of a new story… and I will make sure that at the end of that story, you lose.” She said that with a look of hope on her face.

“Forgive me, oh Almighty One…” She said it while crying and closing her eyes. Those were her final words before her soul was scattered across the world.

Seeing this, I couldn’t hold back my emotions.

I screamed, cried, and felt the pain that the God of Darkness and the Forgotten Goddess had endured.

“This… this hurts so much… damn it…” I said as I sobbed.

“Nao… this story… the Forgotten Goddess… is the Goddess of Benevolence,” Envi said, a tear escaping his eye. But he also looked angry.

I nodded. Based on her traits, it could only be the Goddess of Benevolence. That beautiful white hair, the ocean-like blue eyes, that gentle voice—it had to be her, even without the white cat ears and tail.

“Yes, Envi… Now our final goal is clear. Besides defeating the Demon King, we also have to defeat the Outer God.” I looked at Envi with strong determination.

“You’re right, Nao… We will save the Goddess of Benevolence!”

Finally, the skill [Goddess Vision Deactivated] returned Envi and me to our senses.

…

The God of Darkness seemed to understand that Envi and I now knew the full story.

Then I asked him, “Oh God of Darkness, I understand now why you did what you did in the past. But I don’t understand why you’re still here. Shouldn’t your soul fragments be scattered across the world, leaving you without memories due to the Outer God’s power?”

He gave a faint smile and said, “This is a fragment of my soul that comes from Canis. Before the final battle, I embedded a sliver of my consciousness into Canis and hid here in this room—the dimension where I sealed him for thousands of years.”

“My power in this form is extremely limited. I couldn’t maintain the seal on Canis forever, which is why he breaks free every fifty years… I’m powerless. All I could do was wait for your arrival, oh Child of Fate.” He said this with a sorrowful expression.

“My arrival? Child of Fate? How do you know that?” Envi and I asked him.

“One day… I received a revelation from the Almighty One. He told me I must guide the Child of Fate—the one who would bring peace to this world.”

I thought that made sense. The Almighty One never directly intervenes in the world’s conflicts—He only gives signs and guidance. Envi agreed with that idea too.

Then, the God of Darkness said something shocking: “That’s why… I beg you to accept my gift. In addition to receiving the Blessing of the Darkness, please take Canis as your familiar.” He bowed slightly as he asked.

“This is all I can do… I want to save her… and the Forgotten Goddess.”

Seeing the resolve in his eyes, Envi and I looked at each other. We finally decided to accept his request.

I placed my hand on the God of Darkness’s shoulder and smiled at him.

“We accept… and we will save the Goddess of Benevolence, too—because she’s the one who saved both Envi and me. Of course we’ll help her fight the Outer God.”

Hearing my response, the God of Darkness looked deeply moved. His lips trembled, and tears welled in his eyes.

“I see… so the Forgotten Goddess really is the Goddess of Benevolence… That’s enough for me.” He smiled faintly.

I felt relieved. At last, this puzzle was nearing completion—all the pieces were nearly in place. The rest we would find when we meet the Goddess of Benevolence and defeat the Outer God.

Now, the God of Darkness began granting the Blessing of the Darkness to Envi and me. A magic circle enveloped us and carved the symbol of his blessing into the right side of my chest.

A notification appeared:

[Congratulations! You have obtained the Blessing of the Darkness!]

Envi and I were stunned by how powerful this blessing was.

“This is incredible. I feel like my power is overflowing,” I said, still in disbelief.

“Haha, of course… it’s one of the strongest blessings. And this isn’t the end yet. Get ready to form a contract with Canis.” The God of Darkness pulled Canis into the magic circle.

Canis looked like he couldn’t refuse. He muttered reluctantly, “This isn’t fair… why do I have to become the familiar of these two insects?”

But the God of Darkness gave him a cold stare, which made him sweat.

“I just… don’t want you to…” Canis trailed off, seemingly holding back words.

“…Fine, let’s just get this over with.”

At last, I was about to form a contract with Canis. I steeled myself—because this was the path to becoming even stronger!
