Chapter 198: Malevolent revenge
WHEN MOON REACHED ITS HIGHEST POINT IN THE SKY, IN ANOTHER PLACE, MALEVOLENCE’S EYES MET IT.
She sat on the edge of the stone slab, next to 120 other Beemarines and 4 Beehounds that served as guides—four groups of 31 bees, each planning to sting one person. Six more groups like these were spread over the village.
In front of her was the human village, black-dark and silent; behind her was a house of her target; around her was a window of this house.
Malevolence suppressed a yawn and stood up, forcibly not wincing when her aching muscles protested.
Of course, Malevolence volunteered for this mission against humans, despite her injuries. Of course, she was told by Physicians, and even by Father personally, that it would take her at least a dozen days to heal fully, despite her regeneration.
After her kidnapping, Malevolence had a sprained wrist, numerous bruises and a cracked rib. And an infinite amount of anger.
So Malevolence ignored the instructions to stay in her personal cell and sleep off her injuries. Two days later she was already on her feet, hounding Bloodimina.
“Father worries too much about me. I can walk, fly and fight—what else do I need? Let me stab my stinger into the eyes of these monsters! I failed already when I let my people fall into their hands—let me redeem myself!”
But Bloodimina just shook her head.
“I do what Father orders, and I know he wouldn’t like you to talk like this. There will be other fights, Malevolence. At least your subordinates understand it… Now don’t distract me with something so unimportant!”
So Malevolence left and instead talked to the other Beemarines which were chosen for the mission to avenge Malevolence and her squad.
There, she met more sympathy. Regular Beemarines had their own interpretations of Father’s words.
Eventually, one of them agreed to pass Malevolence her spot in the operation; even her Sergeant and Lieutenant supported this. Malevolence felt like her actions had something not quite right about them…
But she was too angry to care.
That was how Malevolence ended up here in the role of a common soldier.
“It’s time!” the leader of their group said quietly. “We are moving out—and remember, no flying! Beehound Quietstep, lead the way.”
The descent from the window was long and arduous. It’d be easy to fly the pathetic couple hundred meters that separated the moon observation position and the sleeping giant below—but he could wake up from the noise of dozens of wings.
The human warrior was sleeping on the floor on a bed pallet fit for a giant its size; three other humans were sleeping nearby.
A few days earlier, these humans kicked out the original owners of this place to sleep here, in one of the biggest houses in the village. At least, that was how Father explained it in his instructions; to Malevolence, all human houses were way too massive to compare them to each other.
The bees were experienced climbers, and there was plenty of purchase for their hands on the uneven walls; but it was hard to climb only by touch. They tied themselves with rope to each other, so if one bee slipped, others could catch her without her having to fly.
The climb was long and tiring. Malevolence could only use three hands for this, because her sprained wrist still hurt too much. But she grit her teeth and kept moving.
By the time they reached the head of their target, Malevolence couldn’t tell where the other three squads were. But that’s why they had Beemarines.
“They are in position,” Quietstep whispered.
The giant was right next to them, lying on his back and making occasional whistling sounds in his sleep. The light coming from outside was just enough to give the barest idea of the human’s silhouette.
Wincing at the very idea of touching the disgusting creature, Malevolence moved to her assigned position. She and her sisters crawled slowly over the slope of the human’s face, freezing whenever he stirred or made a sound.
But he didn’t wake up from the bees’ light touches, even when Malevolence and half a dozen other bees reached his left eye. The rest of the squad spread over the other eye and other vulnerable points near the head.
“At my command…” The squad leader’s voice was quiet, but it carried far in this silence.
Underneath them, the human stirred again, more than before. His eyes fluttered.
Malevolence crouched and raised her stinger just as the massive eye opened suddenly, and moonlight shone on its wet surface.
“Attack!”

Malevolence was already attacking, faster than all others. Her stinger sank into the soft eye tissue and stayed there when she forcefully pulled back.
Before she flew away, Malevolence caught a moment to stab the human with her knife, just for a tiny bit of extra pain.
A following howl of pain made bees cover their ears. The stung human grabbed his eyes, almost squashing an overly-slow Beemarine and curved onto himself.
Then, this scream was echoed by others. In this room, and then in other houses in the village, humans screamed and thrashed around wildly.
The sight brought a bright smile to Malevolence’s face, even if the screams were splitting her head. Her squad leader shouted something, but it was impossible to hear—the squad just followed her outside.
They had to escape; the village was already waking up, and the Beemarines all had to return in one piece!
Around them, humans shouted in shock, then as they argued with each other. Several fires were lit, and the night stopped being so dark.
Nobody was looking for the Beemarines, but they still moved stealthily. Soon, they reached their hiding place—a hidden cave in the stone under the roof of the same house they just were in.
They had simple bed pallets here and some stored food. While her squad went to the beds to sleep despite the mayhem around, Malevolence stayed awake to look outside.
In no time at all, humans were fighting humans—a sight that almost made Malevolence laugh.
‘When we return, Father will definitely be proud about how we made these monsters suffer!’
