Chapter 219: Last stand
There were several special squads among the regular Warriors and Beemarines led by Bloodhero.
Although without Nectus’ help, identifying genes in chaotically evolved bees became much harder, many of them were still evident and self-explanatory.
Massive claws or heavy natural armor were only some of these abilities. There were some much more deadlier ones, and now they were given an order to attack.
A dozen bees flew to intercept the human leader’s dash. Their path brought them right below the hand hovering near his eyes.
Ambrosia squinted, trying to see more through the swarm, more imagining how the events went than actually seeing them.
Their maneuver moved the special squad directly to the human’s face. It was their one and only opportunity to attack.
In unison, the bees took deep breaths and exhaled torrents of fire!
These bees were put in one squad because they had the same incredible gene—one that let them breathe out pure flames instead of air. When ten bees worked together, the size of a fire cloud covered a third of a human’s face!
The human staggered in surprise, and almost fell with an alarmed shout. It was impossible to tell if the fire dealt damage, but it had stopped him, even if just for a moment.
A moment was all that was necessary for the swarm to envelop him. Thousands of bees crawled over the human’s head and limbs, searching for any vulnerabilities or making their own.
Other humans staggered too when they saw this—and again, the Warrior Bees took the opportunity to attack them.
Although there weren’t many bees with a fire breathing gene in the Empire, there were others with comparable genes. Some could spit out acid, others had an electric organ like Nectus (although much weaker), and some could shoot stingers from their own body without a ballista.
Now, all over the battlefield, these bees used their abilities on humans. The first shouts of pain split the air, and the bees cheered.
Then, a human from the left side grasped his eyes and fell to the ground, convulsing and crushing several dozen bees on his way. The scream he let out made Ambrosia’s ears hurt, but warmed her soul.
Especially when she saw how humans reacted to it. Half of them began taking steps back!
A hope of easy victory flared in Ambrosia, and was immediately squashed when the human leader waves his hands, at once throwing aside half the bees who were attacking him, and raised his torch.
He was shouting something and then began waving it at the other humans. Then he hit the nearest human on the head (again!) with his hand—and incredibly, the other humans shouted back with the same energy and anger.
They charged toward the hive again, even faster than before. Although they still flinched and slowed when bees tried to attack their eyes, now they didn’t stop. The encouraging shouting of their leader pushed them forward.
More and more wounded were brought to Hive Supremo with every minute. Bees with bruises, broken bones, or burns were moaning in pain while their sisters did the best they could to help. Physicians and Nurses worked with selfless determination to save as many as they could, but too many died right before they could get first aid.
Meanwhile, humans didn’t stop even when they entered the range of ballistas and they opened fire.
By then, Bloodhero wisely gave orders for her Warriors to move out of the arrows’ way, but not everybody could do it in time. The volleys of arrows hit humans much more often than bees, but not always.
However, the ballistas did almost no damage this time. Only the special biggest arrows seemed to pierce the thick clothing of humans, and even that wasn’t deep enough to make them stop.
A couple of humans raised their hands to throw torches. Ambrosia’s heart sank.
In just a few minutes, her hive could be destroyed.
Then, one of the torch-throwers screamed and fell, abandoning his weapon to clutch his legs.
The Warrior Bees got to his ankles!
At the same time, another thousand bees charged the second torch-thrower and set the eye-covering net of his on fire! Now he was forced to drop the torch and try to extinguish it, while bees pestered him on all sides.
But even that didn’t slow the others down.
The human leader waved his hand again, for a moment shaking the bees away from his eyes. For an instant, his gaze met Ambrosia’s, and she saw a stubborn rage in it.
He raised his torch, but instead of throwing it, made an enormous step toward Hive Supremo, and then another.

Now he was close enough that his head covered half the area visible from inside the hive! If Hive Supremo’s cave was any lower in its pillar mountain, the human would’ve blocked the entrance entirely.
The Warrior Bees followed the human leader, but were too slow to catch up immediately.
“This is our last chance! My working daughters, your hive depends on the power of your stings! For the Empire!” Ambrosia shouted, flying into the air and pointing at the human.
“FOR THE EMPIRE!”
With this battle cry, all the Foragers who stayed inside the hive until now, or were helping the wounded, flew out.
Foragers still made the most of all the bees. They not only foraged but also carried things all over the Empire and did many other manual duties without carrying titles of specialists. Each of them was ready to sacrifice anything for the colony, even their lives.
Two swarms surrounded the human leader. There were enough bees to cover every inch of his upper body, and if just one out of a hundred stung him, he’d die immediately.
But the numbers weren’t enough.
With a single swing of his torch, the human cut a wide path through his attackers. Although now the fire was dangerously close to his own head, he raised his torch for a swing.
If this swing landed, the torch would crush Hive Supremo—and perhaps Ambrosia with it!
