Chapter 263: Meet the Agents
The system reacted so fast that I barely had the time to finish my thought before I got this notification.
<User, you can create a title: ‘Agent Bee’. Confirm title creation?>
〔Agent Bee〕: +30% to base agility and perception. Requirements: finishing Agent Bee training, ‘Telepathy’ gene at tier V or higher.
Of course, I immediately created the title. But it was only tomorrow that I could begin even planning the exact details of the new (secret) Agent Bees training.
It was very extensive.
The bees had to learn how to travel stealthily over wildness and over human settlements. They had to know how to use surrounding noises to mask the beating of their wings so they could get in range of reading human thoughts without being noticed.
The Agents also had to know how to find food, water and their targets in the wild, how to survive with no support from the hive, and how to fight off predators that might attack them.
They had to know how to use telepathy effectively, especially to read thoughts—this was trickier than sending them.
And they had to know everything there was available about human culture and geopolitics. The Agents-in-training would read through the entirety of Explanatory’s archives, if necessary.
Preparing the first instructors of future Agent Bees was a task in itself. By this time, the first generation of Beehounds with telepathy has already emerged from their brood cells. With all the political instability in the human world, I wanted to send them out sooner, not later.
So instead of training a dedicated Agent Bee instructor first, I picked the most experienced Beehounds and Researchers that were positioned near Krisha village until now and placed them under command of knowledgeable Teacher Bees.
However, I also remembered how most Beehounds went after their training. Being so antisocial helped them not feel lonely in the wild, but the severe social anxiety was *not* something I wished on them!
I tried to find balance when I checked over the training schedule plans.
In the end, the full preparation time for an Agent Bee was 21 days. Their first, most important for development days were mostly the same as other bees had it: they studied in school together with everyone else.
Then they gradually began having more and more days of training outside, in smaller and smaller groups, between the days of studying about humans in Hive Supremo.
There were two thousand trained Agents in total. When I visited them during lessons—and I did it every other day—they acted almost like any other bee. Which meant that they were lively, sociable, and loud.
The more time passed, though, the more serious and quiet Agent Bees became, and more similar to equally quiet Commando Bees. At least, I thought so for a couple of days. Then I knew better.
***
Two days before the Agent Bees were about to finish their training, I came to look at a class of bees another time.
There were 30 Agents-in-training under a Commando Bee instruction, practicing knife stabs.
Although hammers were a more effective weapon against most small predators, Beehounds (and often Commando Bees) didn’t have them as standard uniform. They traveled over enormous distances, which made heavy hammers too cumbersome.
The Agents-in-training moved with easy and fluid grace that made me feel calm about their safety. Wasps and dragons could be fast, but I was sure that the future Agents will be able to dodge any attacks and counter them with stabs in vulnerable spots to drive the enemy away.
Of course, the Commando Bee instructor moved even more gracefully. Her movements were full of deadly effectiveness, even if she just showed how to do things on a wooden dummy.
What was the most stunning, is the total silence on the training field.
Only when the bees noticed my approach and stopped to greet me, the first sounds of voices were heard.
“Father.”
“Ah, Father came to see us. Greetings!”
As if some magical silence spell went away, everybody began waving and greeting me with cheers (except the Commando Bee instructor).
I gaped for a moment, then it dawned on me, and I grinned.
“Hi, girls. Keep training—I just wanted to check on you!” I said, waving at them and taking place at the side of the training field.

As the girls returned to their training dummies, I focused on my telepathy, and was not disappointed.
Thoughts were thrown between my girls back and forth with purpose and telepathic directions. I couldn’t hear them directly—they weren’t aimed at me—but I could hear their echoes in other people’s heads.
Those were hard to hear, though—like listening through a wall.
What took me too long to realize earlier was that the lively personality of Agents-in-training didn’t become any less lively over time. They just learned how to use their telepathy better and were doing it instead of talking with their mouths.
‘…lucky that Father came to see *us*, eh? We got… …sisters!’
‘Let’s show him… …can do!’
‘Ha-ha, I *so* will! Look at this!’
With the last thought, one of the Agents-in-training made a backflip in the air, then executed a lightning-fast series of stabs: eyes, throat, stomach.
I applauded.
‘Looks smooth! Is this backflip actually practical, though?’ I asked the agile girl telepathically.
To give the girl her due, she didn’t jolt, fall, or otherwise embarrass herself. Just turned to glance at me and smiled with a surprising amount of cheekiness.
‘Of course it is. Ask the instructor Stabber-291! The backflip is a good way to avoid being stabbed by a wasp.’
I heard the echo of another thought being sent to the instructor in question a moment later. It was a request to ‘look at this awesome backflip’.
The Commando Stabber-291 wordlessly nodded. She wasn’t telepathic. Just quiet.
I smiled, feeling assured that my Agents won’t fail their task, no matter where I sent them.
And by now, I had more information and more plans. The union of humans and bees was destined to happen.
This was literally the will of the gods, even if the human gods had nothing in common with the real ones!
