Chapter 267: Loss of faith
SAME SITUATION WAS MUCH MORE TENSE FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF THE BRAVE AGENT WHISPER.

Agent Bee Whisper was outed by a damned mosquito!

Because of a slap that was about to crush her together with the other insect, she was forced into flight to evade. Which was very noisy and, of course, immediately attracted attention.

Until now, her hiding spot at the back of his neck was perfect. It served her perfectly well for all the weeks she spent giving Farini “divine” advice.

She could even snack on leftovers of the meat and grass her sisters gathered and shared with her, and nobody noticed her chewing.

Of course, it was still tiresome to spend hours on end hiding in a giant’s clothing, but Whisper had excellent training and was proud and sure of her skills.

She’d never be found if not for this mosquito! It was no wonder Father told bees they were enemies of the Empire.

With the speed of her advanced wings, Whisper dashed to a welcoming crevice on the room’s ceiling and held her breath, watching the human’s reactions.

Her heart was beating fast in her chest. She couldn’t even read Farini’s thoughts, but she hoped he dismissed what he saw.

Until now, her mission was doing perfectly! Now things could get… more complicated.

As Whisper watched, Farini rubbed his eyes and shook his head. Whisper relaxed a little.

‘Sisters, this is Whisper. Human Farini noticed me, and I can’t currently approach to hear his thoughts. He seems to have dismissed what he saw, but be wary.’

The message went to all members of Whisper’s group of Agents. Although only Whisper was responsible for directly listening to Farini and answering his prayers as “divine guardian”, thirty more bees were in Whisper’s squad.

They were gathering food for those who were too busy spying, sifting through thoughts of others, and supporting each other’s actions.

‘Will this affect our plans?’ another Agent asked.

‘It shouldn’t,’ Whisper replied immediately. ‘We did the hardest thing—traveling through the human kingdom. Now we are close enough to the High King to reach him ourselves if we need to.’

‘But will Farini go to see him, Whisper?’

‘He should. It’s too important for him right now to not do it.’ Whisper chuckled. ‘The situation holds him by the wings. I could’ve told him all the truth, and he’d still need to talk to the High King.’

Her sisters laughed together with Whisper. She wasn’t lying, after all.

‘Jokes are jokes, but if you do that, Farini will be talking about *us* on this meeting,’ the group’s Sergeant said, interrupting the laughter. ‘We follow the plan, sisters!’

***

By the next day, Whisper found a new hiding place in Farini’s clothing. She was relieved to find that he already forgot about the incident yesterday under the weight of thoughts about meeting with the High King.

Almost forgot.

Farini kept checking the back of his neck, as if expecting to find Whisper there. She was smarter than that, though—she hid under Farini’s hat.

Her sisters were hiding where they could, too. When Farini stepped into the High King’s throne hall, they already spread around the palace. By now they were everywhere, watching humans walk around, listening to their thoughts and trying to decipher their language.

Only Whisper was with Farini, because he was her human. And she couldn’t leave that stuffy hat (which was more like a house to her).

She couldn’t even see the royal court from here. It undoubtedly was just like Farini’s court, but bigger—lots of humans, lots of their chattering, and a room that could fit hundreds of bee colonies.

Through Farini’s thoughts, she listened to him explaining why the High King should help his province. At first, Farini was anxious, but self-assured.

However, the more time passed, the more his self-assurance disappeared, and instead, his thoughts were becoming doubtful. Other courtiers were looking down on Farini, and the High King himself looked very uninterested in what Farini had to say.

Soon Whisper could smell anger and fear in Farini’s sweat.

‘What?! How could he say this? My province paid all taxes for years, and he refuses aid?!’ Farini thought. ‘How could he—oh, no. This tyrant! He would rather have me imprisoned instead of listening to my complaints or helping… Oh, I was so blind! I didn’t see the High King’s selfishness—no, I didn’t want to see, or to think about it.’

This was exactly what happened.

Guards came to apprehend Farini and escort him to the palace’s dungeons, which Farini resisted, shouting curses at the High King. His hat fell off his head while he fought, but nobody noticed Whisper hiding in Farini’s hair.

While humans fought and suffered, all she thought about was not being noticed!

The intrigues of humans were only a source of laughter to her. Since she learned how to read, Whisper was studying humans. Since she was given an official title of an Agent, Whisper was listening to humans’ thoughts.

And the more she learned about them, the more ridiculous humans were to her.

To her, if the High King decided that Farini’s duty was to give everything he had to the human kingdom, then he should have given it without complaint!

But what kind of ruler wouldn’t help his subjects when he had the means to do so?

Whisper thought all this while Farini cursed humans on the way to his dungeon cell.

But inside of it, Farini’s thoughts changed.

‘Gods, how could you be so treacherous? You promised me protection, success—and now I’m here! In this tiny cell… Treated like the worst criminal! My execution can’t be far from here… Were you playing jokes on me, gods? Laughing at the plights of mortals?!’

Whisper saw Farini kick a stone wall of his small stone prison. Now she was on high alert.

Her target had to be malleable. Obedient!

Even if he was in this prison, every human who was on the side of bees was important. Whisper couldn’t let Farini lose his belief!
