Chapter 268: Whisper’s human
All the jostling skewed Farini’s hat to the side, and Whisper could easily crawl from underneath it and look around.
Their current place really was, as Farini thought about it, a cell. By human standard, it was also tiny—just a couple hundred meters in all directions. Smells of humans and their poor hygiene filled the air, making Whispers’ sensitive antennae curl in disgust.
The only source of light and moderately fresh air were several long horizontal holes in the cell’s door. Each was big enough that Whisper could easily crawl through.
She cheered up. In the worst-case scenario, at least she could escape.
But abandoning her assigned human would be a total failure for her as an Agent.
Right now, Farini sat on his knees on the floor, thinking angry thoughts and chattering aloud—Whisper even recognized several common curse words in human language.
He was losing faith because of Whisper’s lies earlier, but returning it was easy. She just had to lie harder—and Whisper was an expert at coming up with things Farini believed!
She just had to tell him the same things he was already telling himself.
‘I never left you, Farini. Your divine guardian is still here,’ Whisper sent the human soothing mental messages. ‘Your suffering is a part of your road. As long as you have determination, you will walk it through to your victory.’
Farini perked up, gathering his hook-like fingers for a prayer, only to put them on his legs in the next moment.
‘What path? This is a sick joke! What kind of victory can wait for me here? I will be executed within a week for a “rebellion”, and the High King will take my lands and put someone he wants to reward in my place. Everything I built… it’s all doomed…’
‘Never despair, Farini. As long as you keep faith, the solution will appear.’
Farini shook his head, and Whisper knew her words didn’t reach his soul fully. She huffed.
That man! Couldn’t he just believe her, like before?
‘Ah, but it was expected. Humans have this principle Father explained, after all. “Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me,”.’
As Father explained it in Agents’ lessons, humans usually learned from their mistakes and couldn’t be tricked by the same thing twice if they uncovered the trickery.
If Whisper wanted to keep her human, she needed to bring him genuine help one more time. But was this even possible?
She folded her arms, closed her eyes, and focused on the mental images of her brood sisters.
‘Agents, this is Whisper. You must’ve already heard that Farini ma Michka Hetsha was imprisoned. If nothing changes, he will probably be killed, and I think it will be a waste.’
‘We have infiltrated the royal palace. Farini is not needed anymore, Agent Whisper,’ the Sergeant Agent said. ‘I’m thinking about our next plans right now. Our goal was to take control of the High King or enough people in his immediate surroundings to influence his decisions. You will be more useful for the task, Whisper, if you abandon Farini and join us.’
Whisper huffed. Farini was *her* assignment, *her* human! She knew him like the back of her hand! She watched him while he ate, she watched him while he slept, she watched him while he worked and while he mated with his wife.
Something protested violently in her at the thought of just abandoning him.
Whisper tried to put this feeling into words and rational ideas.
‘I disagree, Sergeant. I’m most suited for working with Farini, and I think he might still be useful to us if he escapes his prison. He’s still a lord of humans, and… I don’t know. If I could consult Hive Supremo…’
There was a chain of Beehounds dispatched specifically for this connection between Hive Supremo and important places in the human kingdom. They lived in tiny shelters at the limit range of their telepathy and did nothing but transmit messages back and forth.
It was a relaxed assignment compared to that of Agents working directly with humans. When there were no incoming messages, these Beehounds had entire days to chat with their sisters and work on making their shelters more comfortable.
However, the capital city of Naregan Kingdom was too far, and there wasn’t a telepathic chain leading toward it. If the Agents wanted to ask Father and his Advisers for their opinions, they would need to reach Upper Grazahmich first.
Which gave Whisper an idea.
‘Yes, Sergeant! Think—Farini is a province lord. Put him in his province, and he’s useful again! After we help him here, he will be sooo loyal to us, he will bow to us!’ Whisper promised. ‘Then he could help the Bee Empire itself. This is just what Father wanted!’
‘You are so sure that you can do it… Fine, let’s see if you are as smart as you claim, Whisper. I give you full responsibility for your operation. Give me a plan and I will give you help—as long as it doesn’t undermine the primary mission.’

‘You can bet I will!’ Whisper replied cheerfully.
The plan was already gathering in her head. With the abilities of Agents spread in the palace, it will be entirely possible.
But all things took time.
For the next five days, Farini was stuck in his cell and fed only once a day. The portions were so small that after Farini and local little beasts finished eating, there weren’t enough crumbs left for Whisper to snack on.
But at least she had sisters who brought her extra supplies; Farini had nothing and no one.
Except Whisper, who answered his prayers every day and urged him to keep faith, despite not being entirely sure that things will work out.
And on the sixth day, things were set into motion.
‘Farini. You aren’t the only one who sees the High King as a tyrant and a man who thinks only about himself instead of his subjects. Prepare to act, because you will only have one chance to walk your path!’
