Chapter 340: The effect of accumulated luck

“Yes, Father. I saw it! No matter what you pick next, you complain. So often… In so many dreams… Slightly less chance of that if you take more perception, I think,” Undecided said earnestly.

“I? Complaining?” I huffed. “This is just not true. I only ever accept the failures of my luck with dignity! Perhaps in the past, when I was so much younger… Just a teenager Drone… But I’m a new person now.”

“No, I can confirm—you are still the same Drone, Necty,” Ambrosia said just as earnestly as Undecided spoke earlier. “No amount of time or genes can change you. You just calmed down a little.”

To prove her wrong, I proudly raised my chin and focused on business. The telepathic whispers of my Advisers discussing whether I was or wasn’t prone to complaining couldn’t offend me if I blocked them out.

“Second point in perception, then. Let’s see where it brings us. There certainly *are* genes I’d like to see,” I declared.

〔For improving perception, you have a choice of next genes: ‘Chaotic Evolution I->II’, ‘Enhanced Perception V->VI’, and ‘Heat Vision’.〕

〔Chaotic Evolution I->II: with a 10% chance, this gene will be replaced in progeny with a random tier VI gene.〕

〔Enhanced Perception V->VI: increases base perception to 60.〕

〔Heat Vision: allows seeing infrared waves.〕

“Ah, you were right, Undecided! I have no reasons to complain,” I smiled and read the list aloud for the furiously noting things down Researchina. “The luck necessary to have two enhanced perception genes in a row is massive!”

“You won’t even consider other options?” Amby asked, then nodded. “I understand. You don’t like chaos much… And the usefulness of the third one is questionable.”

“You know exactly what I’m thinking. Although…”

Improving the chaotic evolution gene would increase the tier of ‘Precognition’ the future Oracles were born with. That should let them predict the future farther away, but I felt like this will just decrease the effectiveness of Oracles.

As Undecided explained to me once, the “dreams” of the future became less and less clear the farther away from the present they were. I understood it like that—the closer to the present, the more defined the futures were. If every chance and decision of everybody changed the future, then in just a week of time ahead, there were trillions of futures!

I felt that even if an Oracle could predict farther into the future, her predictions will be even less certain than on average.

“Although?” Ambrosia asked, tilting her head. A lock of hair fell on her cheek, and I moved to put it back behind her ear in a semi-automatic gesture.

Then I shut down the idea of picking the ‘Chaotic Evolution II’ just for the Oracles’ sake.

“Nothing. Let’s move on.”

I took the ‘Enhanced Perception VI’ and mentally prepared to be disappointed on the next upgrade.

“And what disappointment can be more potent than failing to give ‘Flight III’ to most of the population?” I asked aloud. “Agility will be next.”

〔For improving agility, you have a choice of next genes: ‘Quiet Flight I’, ‘Runner Legs’, and ‘Improved Aerial Evasion’.〕

〔Quiet Flight I: decreases noise from flying by 50%.〕

〔Runner Legs: increases running speed by 10%.〕

〔Improved Aerial Evasion: greatly increases evasion in the air.〕

You’d think one couldn’t be disappointed when he was already prepared to not get what he wanted, but… I was still disappointed!

A hope was in me against all hope to get this ‘Flight III’ and instead I got something pretty average and boring.

“‘Quiet Flight’? This sounds like the gene used by evolved hornets that brought us trouble earlier…” Bloodhero muttered, frowning. “I hope more of these don’t appear. There were no more sightings of them so far, but I don’t trust a hornet to not become a problem, eventually.”

“Interesting! I got reports about the shape of these hornets’ wings. They actually had fur on them—Researchers suggested to me it helps to dissipate the sound,” Tabletina said with her eyes flashing with interest. “It’s a side-research, but I’m still trying to find a creature whose fur could be used for similar coverings on the wings of our scouts.”

I cleared my throat.

“Very interesting, but very irrelevant.” Not to mention, Tabletina brought me the reports about the fur coverings project earlier, alongside all others. And I read them all, although the stack was pretty thick!

The Advisers shut up and sat straighter.

“I suggest you to not take the ‘Quiet Flight’ gene. My research will definitely find success. Eventually,” Tabletina declared.

“The hives won’t feel *right* if they suddenly become half as loud as usual. It won’t be *lively*!” Whisper added.

I scratched my ear. I was so used to the background noise of thousands of wings, talking, walking, working, that I barely noticed it.

“Very well. The ‘Runner Legs’ are almost useless, so I will pick the third one.”

With these words—and the lack of other objections—I took the ‘Improved Aerial Evasion’. It was bound to work well with the ‘Danger-Averse Reflexes’ of the bees.

Next, after some thought (and some insistence from Bloodhero that not only more strength would help our soldiers, it will be useful for workers, too, so Workharder could stop talking about the endurance upgrade) I picked strength.

However, instead of immediately presenting me with a list of options, the system suddenly began playing a jingle in my head that sounded like it came straight from a casino.

Then, a new screen, shiny and sparky, appeared in front of me. Dazzling stars and sevens floated in it in a spiral, making me feel like I suddenly teleported to Vegas.

‘What the hell is this?!’ I had time to think while the entire animation played. ‘System, what. The hell. IS THIS?!’

It didn’t reply, but the stars finally settled down and a text appeared on the screen.

〔JACKPOT—LUCKY DRAW! In this pick, you gain three tiers of a gene instead of one! This is a gift from the God of Humanity. For improving strength, you have a choice of next genes…〕
