Chapter 56: Two ants with one stone
The destination—the anthill of red wood ants.
Finally, those little thieves who almost starved my colony in its infancy were going to get their just desserts.
The march of legionary vampire ants slowed as the first of them smelled the scent of red wood ants.
At the same time, the foraging red wood ants workers noticed the first legionary ants.
They immediately shouted something in their clicking ant language. More red wood worker ants poured out of their anthill, and all of them began to gather on their surface, preparing to meet the legionary vampire ants’ attack.
Like that, one could imagine that red wood ants were fully inferior to legionary ants. Legionary ants were—at least their soldiers—two heads taller than red wood ants, and their stats were twice as high!
The red wood ants didn’t even have dedicated soldiers.
And the legionaries fell upon them like a wave. Their soldiers tore with their fangs into the nearest red wood ants, tearing off their heads with ease.
The red wood ants resisted, but their weak teeth were nothing compared by the might of the legionary ants.
But then, the red wood ants that gathered higher on the anthill stood on all fourths (sixths) and raised their ant tails like attacking scorpions. Out of them, jets of formic acid poured over the legionary ants.
Those who were hit by the acid recoiled in pain. It was worse for those who were hit in the eyes—most only lost 5-10 health points from acid pouring on them, but a few unlucky ants fell to the ground, clutching their burned eyes and antennae.
However, the acid rain was just a small drop in the sea of the legionaries! The sisters of the fallen ants just walked over their bodies to reach for the sprayers.
Red wood ants fell in droves, but hundreds more rushed out of the anthill to stand and spray acid over their enemies. The sharp scent of acid mixed with the smell of ant blood into a horrible stench.
A massacre of ants on both sides.
Was it wrong of me to enjoy this unbridled violence? To find pleasure in the smells of combat and pained cries of dying ants?
Ants weren’t that far from the bees. I could’ve been one of them if I pissed off a different god on that fateful day…
‘Nectus, stop being so sentimental about some fucking ants. I swear, if you put googly eyes on a toaster, you would protect it with your life. They aren’t *evolved* enough to have feelings. You’ve seen how your own bees were until they inherited intelligence. Stop whining and make sure all the goddamn ants are dead.’
As always, the cynical voice was right. And an asshole, but don’t we all need an inner asshole cynic to kick us into gear?
The bodyguard squad next to me was enjoying the sight of ants dying without a hint of remorse. They were grinning, pointing their fingers, and exchanging comments.
I followed their example and relaxed. A satisfied smile appeared on my face.
“Revenge is a dish best eaten cold, and with some honey on top. Like a pancake.” I looked at the bees near me. “Do we have any honey left? I could use a snack.”
“Here, Father!” The Sergeant Warrior gave me a jar of honey. “Your idea was really so amazing—we’ve never seen a massive fight like that, and it’s all between our enemies!”
“We will tell all our sisters when we return. It’s a pity they never got to see it… I’m going to remember this sight until the end of my life!”
So for 74 days, according to the Sergeant’s lifespan timer. I shook my head and licked the honey off my fingers.
“We can’t stay here and watch the fight—it’s really *is* late, and this might take a long time. Perhaps even days. But after the ants are done fighting, the Military Adviser should send bees to come and finish the survivors.”
At that, I led my squad away from the ongoing carnage.

When I arrived at the hive, the sun had almost set.
“Father! Here you are, finally! The Project Great Flood has been done as you instructed—all the aphids are stored in the work camp for now, but the bees are ready to carry them here first thing tomorrow!” the Economics Adviser greeted me as soon as I landed.
Next to her stood a Military Adviser, and a Queen Attendant.

“We’ve let yellow meadow ants flee as they pleased, Father,” the Military Adviser said. “And the defense of the hive is ready, just in case legionaries attack again.”
It was—there were many bees with spears standing near the entrance, much more than there were guards usually.
“But, but, Father,” the Economic Adviser continued. “What do we *do* with these aphids? You told us to keep them alive, so we fed them some nectar and water, but… What if they die?”
Aw, shit. Well, I believed aphids could survive for a night without food.
“It’s alright, you all did well. Uh…” I looked at the Queen Attendant, who all this time has been staring at me with a slight frown. “Did you want something too, B10409?”
She perked up at being called by her name. Of course, I’ve just looked it up through the system.
Now to think about this, I doubted many bees remembered names besides their own and maybe their direct superior’s…
“Father, Queen Ambrosia asked you to come to her chambers as soon as you returned.”
“Huh? Why? Did something happen? No one got hurt, no?”
The Queen Attendant shook her head.
“Queen Ambrosia told you that you’ve been away for too long, and she requires your seed before sunset. Hurry, it’s almost dark!”
Oh, it was one of the *good* days already?
First the Project Great Flood, then the Operation Honey Trap, and all that on a day when I got laid?
Thanks to my boosted stamina, I wasn’t too tired for this even after a day of flying around!
“Hell yeah! My Queen awaits!”

But next morning, as I awoke from sleep on the pillow of Ambrosia’s soft breasts, it was with the thought that I still had to make sure all the hostile ants were dead, and all the aphids were tended for.
With great unwillingness, I moved away from Ambrosia’s generous bosom and went to work.
