Chapter 70: The turn of an era
<Congratulations! You’ve implemented a ‘Basic Hygiene’ technology in your colony. You gain 8 development points.>
〔Basic Hygiene〕
Brainpower requirement: 220
Wellness: +0,1% per 1 thousand populace.
Resilience: +0,1 per 1 thousand populace.

<Congratulations! You’ve implemented a ‘Primitive Horizontal Architecture’ technology in your colony. You gain 4 development points.>
<Congratulations! You’ve implemented a ‘Leather Tanning’ technology in your colony. You gain 4 development points.>
<Congratulations! You’ve implemented a ‘Pottery’ technology in your colony. You gain 6 development points.>
<Congratulations! You’ve implemented a ‘Wickerwork’ technology in your colony. You gain 6 development points.>
<Congratulations!..>
Ovens, sewing, bows and arrows, spear throwers (unintuitive, but interesting and useful sticks for throwing other sticks better)… While my daughters studied, my Research Bees and Craftsmen Bees worked to implement new technologies.
And there were a lot of them!
Boosted by my blood, Researcher Bees became even more driven. Even though feeding them my hair didn’t work, they were still going through primitive technologies with incredible speed!
Although Researchers themselves were few, Researchina’s Colony Council bonus wasn’t just an arbitrary line in my system panel.
Where intelligence and knowledge of my daughters wasn’t enough, Researchina “borrowed” bees from other specializations, mostly Forager Bees, and made them “research”, too.
And by “research” I meant “bash their heads into a problem until a solution came together *somehow*”. 90% of their research was just pure brute force!
Don’t know how to make a bone needle? Break 1000 bones until 1 turns into a decent needle. Bows aren’t bowing? Cut 1000 trees into branches and try 10000 times… Even bees without training could do simple tasks under the watchful eye of Researcher Bees.
Since it achieved results and didn’t pull away so many Foragers that our production levels fell, Researchina only got high praise from me. And lots of headpats. (Although I was growing suspicious that she didn’t like them… why? Why would someone dislike headpats? Even at 121 intelligence, I couldn’t understand.)
I was wondering just how bloated my technology list could become thanks to Researchina’s efforts, when I was hit with an even bigger announcement.
<Congratulations, user. Your colony has met the necessary requirements to move past the Stone Age and enter the Early Bronze Age! Your Stone Age technologies are going to merge into ‘Technologies of Stone Age’. The list of technologies that will merge: ‘Primitive Containers’, ‘Primitive String’, ‘Fire’, ‘Primitive Clothing’, ‘Stone Weapons and Tools’, ‘Bone Tools’, ‘Primitive Sewing’, ‘Primitive ovens’, ‘Throwing’, ‘Cooking’, ‘Wickerwork’, ‘Leather Tanning’, ‘Primitive Horizontal Architecture’, ‘Primitive Entertainment’, ‘Primitive Containers’, ‘Primitive Bows and Arrows’, ‘Animal Husbandry’, ‘Primitive Transportation’.>
<Merged technologies granted by genes will stay in your empire even if the ‘Technologies of Stone Age’ will be forgotten, but they won’t show in the list of technologies from now on.>
〔Technologies of Stone Age〕
Brainpower requirement: 200
Gives access to all Stone Age technologies.
1 unit of food feeds 10% more people.
Allows taming, keeping and breeding animals for various resources.
Allows cultivating plants for various resources.
Allows crafting and building from Stone Age materials.
Allows making primitive art.

Military: +15 per 1 thousand soldiers.
Logistics: +0,2 per 1 thousand populace.
Resilience: +2 per 1 thousand populace.

<Congratulations, for reaching the Early Bronze Age you got a new achievement: “The Turn of an Era”! Your reward: ‘Fast Learner II’ gene and ‘Fast Learner III’ gene.>
〔Fast Learner I->III: increases learning speed by 10%->30%.〕
‘Ah. And here I thought my tech list will only get more and more bloated with time until it will become so long, I won’t ever bother to scroll to the end… Just kidding, this is great! I’ve just skipped past agricultural research! Not that there is anything worth planting.’
I opened my empire’s status.

Thanks to all the recent technologies, my Empire’s stats shot into the sky! It only made sense for the Bee Empire to have an absolutely broken amount of workpower.
And yet, I got less and less development points from the attribute growth.
The hive had changed incredibly, thanks to the tireless work of my daughters (under my most wise guidance, of course).
The honeycombs were split into clear zones: for sleep, for crafting, for research, for storage, and so on. There were signposts all over the place to guide the workers. New, horizontal buildings made not just from wax, but also from wood, filled the floor of the hive cave: a massive school, the training grounds for Warrior Bees, a kitchen, ovens for pottery and vats for leather tanning.
All that production created so much smoke and fumes that I had to invent basic ventilation and kick those industries close to the exit from the hive.
It still stank if you got too close.
Then there was Pollenia’s hive. Aphids… They bred quickly, down there in the dark. The amount of honeydew and meat that could be harvested from them depended mostly on the digging speed of Pollenia’s workers.
Although at the moment, most of our food still came from flowers, I was already planning to dig more aphid tunnels—perhaps near our own mountain.
But with all those improvements, my Bee Empire still didn’t reach even 100 development points! The progression of attributes to development was not linear at all.
I clenched my fist.
My little princesses have studied hard for 5 days. A short time, but we had too little of it to waste.
The day came to test my daughters’ readiness for the mission now—and they better *be* ready.
I was going to be a very strict dad, no matter how adorable my little princesses could be!
