Chapter 884: Discovery Of Theme
The first Up Challenge was equivalent to a cooperative survival theme.

It required them to coordinate to navigate the treacherous obstacles through sheer will. If either one of them lost their will or no longer had the motivation to continue, then they would have fallen there.

The second challenge was a parkour challenge in which the two were no longer chained up and were free.

However, the twist was that to advance forward, both players had to complete the parkour challenge at the same time.

This required them to have the will to pursue their goal of achieving success together.

Despite the setbacks and how one of them finished a little bit faster, they had to endure and restart the process from scratch.

The third challenge was a completely different environment. They were forced into an environment where monsters overrun civilization.

There was a clear indication of the path ahead, but as they walked along, they would see humans or other races running toward them and pleading for help.

They failed the first time because Carmen didn’t expect it to be a trap and assisted them, only to end up opening the safety barrier of the path. And since the two were completely restrained at that time, they were quickly killed by monsters and restarted from the beginning.

Carmen was emotionally affected and nearly broke down. Thankfully, he had consoled her in time and helped her get back up as the two continued the path.

‘The third path should be a willpower of sadness.’ Xu Feng silently deduced, recalling the encounters in their path.

So many humans were slain in front of them, some even being devoured alive. Along the way, there were even children who were not spared, their eyes gazing at them, seemingly trying to convey to let them in the path.

In the end, Carmen had to shut her eyes and hold Xu Feng’s hand as they ignored them.

After all, they were traps set by the System. The obstacle was simple and straightforward. Walk the path and reach the end without derailing.

But once derailed, the protection of the path would be gone and the two would have to restart because the monsters would target them almost immediately. One could say it was a sadist and cruel obstacle meant to invoke their sadness.

It was as if they were saying to give up and stop the suffering of others.

The tragic scenes only played out because they kept advancing. Once they stopped, the tragedy actually paused.

Although the time it took to complete the third challenge was relatively short, it dampened Carmen a lot which required them to rest for a long time before she recovered.

And as if the System had perceived that, the fourth challenge came and it was the horror theme.

To be more precise, it was fear that meant to consume their will—or more specifically, Carmen. She had been wracked with guilt and sadness for the scenes she experienced in the third challenge after all.

Unfortunately, the System miscalculated terribly and the one who was affected in this challenge was him.

Thanks to Xu Feng being overwhelmed by fear. It triggered Carmen’s instinct to shield him, and her guilt was finally lifted as she continuously protected and carried him all the way to the end of the challenge.

Once that challenge ended, Carmen was refreshed and no longer looked back at the third challenge. As for Xu Feng, he managed to regulate his emotions while cursing at the fourth challenge in anger.

Yes, anger and not fear!

Since the challenge was over, Xu Feng would be damned to continue to be in fear at such a pathetic moment. Finally, with their mindset cleared up, they encountered the fifth challenge which was somewhat a combination of the previous four challenges.

It tackled their emotional resilience to continue to bounce back from difficult experiences and maintain a positive outlook.

Although the fifth challenge was supposed to be tough, the two didn’t bend and remained strong as they got through the challenge.

Based on those collective challenges and icons retrieved, Xu Feng came to understand that their willpower and emotion had been constantly tested.

Maybe the maze they saw all along wasn’t actually a maze, but rather a complex emotion of themselves. The dead-end path they encountered could possibly be things they had long forgotten or kept away from resurfacing.

From a philosophical context, what they had experienced was called Permissive Will. It refers to the will that allows things to happen, even if they are not desired, and recognizing that some events are beyond their control.

“All the things we encounter cannot be controlled or understood, but this sixth challenge of memorization is a clear demonstration of Intentional Will.” Xu Feng muttered as he stared at the rules being passed.

The rules of the sixth challenge were clear and concise—a far cry from the previous challenge which included many unknown variables.

The memorization obstacle didn’t have any random nonsense showing up and was direct in telling them to memorize and spot the abnormalities.

“What have you been muttering?” At this moment, Carmen suddenly went to him and asked curiously.

He had been struck in a daze ever since she ranted a bit, and was confused by his action.

“Ah, I just comprehend something.” Xu Feng snapped out of his daze and smiled lightly at her. He didn’t plan on explaining everything to her because it would be far too complex and time-consuming.

Though he did highlight some of the significance such as the philosophical will that they had endured.

“Ugh, what a creepy dungeon.” Carmen was disgusted by the design and wanted to spit out her saliva to the ground. She might no longer be affected by the third challenge, but she would never be able to forget those vivid-like scenes.

“I wouldn’t say creepy is the correct term here.” Xu Feng smirked. “It would be more correct to say it’s quite meticulous and extensive in its desire to test our will in each challenge while being extremely subtle.”
