Chapter 112: Interwined Fates

It had been three days since the result was announced. Multiple tests had been taken as revision for their terminal exam. Though top ten students were exempted from giving the terminal exam, they were asked to give these revision tests. So that they could be used as the basis of their result making and it would help them for competition too.

Every face turned sour. Since Nora came first in every revision test. Whether it was English or Maths, French or humanities. She had excelled in all of them.

“A student should be weak in one subject at least. How could she excel in all of them!” a girl could not help but grumble. “Penny, i am telling you she is using some technology to cheat and teachers could not catch it. A student who used to come last in the class could not progress this much so easily.” she grumbled with hatred and disgust. Penny only smiled and lowered her head.

“Kate, I am glad that you have become my friend so easily. When I shifted to your room I thought you would not like me because of the rumors. But you do not need to worry about me. I am used to it now. Nora is soaring high. As long as she did not drag me anymore. I do not care about it.” She covered her face with her hands. Her shoulders trembled slightly but then she inhaled a deep breath and smiled at Kate.

Her smile was so caring that Kate grumbled something under her breath but started writing in her file again. She failed to notice how Penny’s eyes twinkled.

“Kate, since your family is not coming. Would you like to go to my house this weekend? My mother is making pies.” She put her pen down and looked at Kate with worry. Kate went silent. Everyone believed that she was another charity case with no parents. That was why no one ever noticed her. Penny was the first to extend her hands. She felt gratitude but she also felt guilty.

The truth was her family was one of the richest families in Korea. But she wanted to explore the world so she had come to study here. The result was, her parents did not send her money. They told her if she wanted to explore the world, she should have skills to do that.

“Umm Penny, about that..” she did not know how to explain.

“Do not worry, my mother is kind. She would not ask you questions you do not like.” Penny shook her head. Pity! She would show a lot of pity to this girl and use her as a pawn against Nora. Girls like her were easy to fool as long as you gave a few gifts and homely food.

“Alright!” ‘It could be a good change from the programs I am making to earn money.’ Kate shrugged as she continued writing in her file.

“Principal Kai, the competition is being conducted throughout the country. Our school has postponed the midterm exams for those students so that they could perform well yet you are putting your bets on a girl surrounded with so many rumors? I have heard her uncle is already putting pressure on the school to expel her. He said that he could not handle her affairs anymore and wanted to assign a home tutor for her.” the director scrolled down to see more and more rumors covering the whole screen. He felt a headache coming.

The way he rubbed his forehead did not make Principal Kai feel pressure. But he was stunned. That girl! Could she see the future?

“Stop staring at my face? Reply! How can you trust such a girl? If we failed this time too our reputation would get another hit. How could we treat ourselves as the best school in the country then?” his voice had a lot of anger and resentment but when he looked at lost Kai, it only increased. “Are you treating all this as a joke? Simons are already putting so much pressure on me to give your position to their relatives. If the school failed this time, you would lose too.” he warned and only then did Kai close his eyes. His face looked solemn.

“We have been losing continuously for the past four years.. We will not allow another defeat this time! Only 12 students will be selected as representatives for our country. Nora has a great chance to stand out. Though the rumors put a question on her characters, it could not be ignored that she had gotten full marks in every test. The teachers did not like her but even they believed that she was the best trump card.” he explained only to get another snicker in return.

“As of yesterday, throughout the national education system, there were only six candidates who achieved the Grand Slams in the primary competition. It would be our turn. If Nora could perform well then i will think about it. Otherwise, I want you to change her with the boy on the second rank. Kane from section one. He had a good image and came from a better family too.” Principal Kai clenched his hand into a fist.

“Sir, I know that my position is at stake but I want to take this chance. If Nora fails, I will resign from my position. But if she succeeds, I want Simon to leave this school forever.” the director was stunned to hear his reply. He stared at Kai as if he had heard wrong but then he laughed.

“Very well! But remember, I will not let you renege your promise, Kai.” he stood up ready to leave. His hands stopped on the knob. “If she did not clear the grand slam, she would be expelled from the school too. You both can leave together.” Kai took a deep breath. His shoulders slumping and he leaned on the chair.

He took his phone and dialed her number. “It all went as you have predicted. Now our fate is in your hands.”
