Chapter 180: Nora, My Love!

Nora stared at the missed calls on her phone. She took a deep breath and dialed the number.

“Hello!”

“Where are you, Nora?” The shaky voice made her feel guilty further. “If Alex is forcing you, I will break his bones.” but the threat made her laugh again.

“…” victor was stunned by the laughter in reply. He stared at the phone to make sure Nora had called and he was not hallucinating.

“Nora! Where the hell are you?” he growled, his furious voice was barely controlled, making Nora stop laughing.

“Do you think Alex would do that?” she whispered softly, helplessly, “do you think i will just run away? Why would I need that? I have been interested in him, I would have dated him openly, Victor. I would have refused you and chosen him. Why would I leave my career, my education, my family and my future behind for him?” she leaned on the bed and stared outside.

“I… then the rumors.” he let go of the breath he was holding, “i knew that they were wrong. I knew they all were wrong. Where are you?” if she had not noticed the strain in his voice and exhaustion in it, she would have scolded him further for being so naive.

“I was looking for Alex because I needed his help. But when I went out to look for him, I met a few ruffians. They attacked me. I somehow ran away, but I got injured. So, I am in the hospital.” this was not the first or the last time she had lied to Victor, to everyone around him.

“Oh! Damn Nora, why did you not tell me? You must have been serious while i… forget it! Which hospital?” she could hear the voice of his footsteps and the car engine and sighed.

“I am in the pupil branch? Would you bring me some chicken soup? I am carving for it.” the car paused with a screech. She heard him sighed and then a soft chuckle. A smile spread on her lips too.

“Foolish girl! They will not allow you to eat outside food. But.. I will see what I can do.” The car started again and she cut the call so that he could drive safely.

“Was it your boyfriend?” The nurse checking her temperature and blood pressure gleaned at Nora when she nodded her head. “He seems too caring and sweet. You are a lucky girl that your boyfriend will be with you to share your pain.” She noted the details on the doctor chart and left when Nora did not reply.

“When I am in pain?” Nora stared at her wounded body. She had been injured so many times in her past life. She even died by them, so injuries did not feel painful this time. As if her soul was numb to these kinds of pains.

But how could it feel if someone would take care of her and accompany her this time? She could not imagine it. All she knew was the cold floor where she used to lie after being beaten.

“This life is already much better.” since she could enjoy the warm bed and tasty food.

Victor was there in half an hour. He had a wide grin on his face when he showed him the small tiffin. He took it out from his large overcoat.

Nora rolled her eyes but laughed at his actions.

“They did not stop you?” she stared at the oversize coat and laughed. “Or laughed at you?”

Victor grimaced and touched his feigning heart break.

“Nora, my love! I can accept any humiliation for you. As long as you command, I am ready to walk naked on the road. Why does it matter if I have worn an overcoat!” The words sounded so dramatic that she laughed again. Looking at his expressions of valor and drama.

She looked at the warm container in her hands. His smell and warmth lingerd on it. He noticed the change and walked closer.

Taking her hands in his and rubbing them softly with his index finger and thumb, he sighed. He looked at her wounds and felt his chest stifling.

“I should have been there. You could have called me if you were going out at night.” Nora shook her head. She reveled in the warmth he was offering her.

“Who would have thought this would happen? That area is usually safe. I didn’t even have much money with me. Their behavior..” she hesitated and he leaned on her. Placing his head at the crook of her neck, he inhaled. Only then did his body relax a bit.

He was stiff. He was anxious. He might have joked to lighten her mood but inside, he was burning. He was useless to not take care of her. And he was furious that she was hurt again.

“It is not that simple, Nora. Why would they attack a student with no money or background? Do you think..” he raised his head to meet her eyes. Hesitating, he asked, “could it be your family? I mean, that is not the first time Penny would target you! And she had been humiliated these days. She is losing her control of the class. What if..” he did not continue but his eyes were probing.

Nora stared hard at him, conflicted. Blaming Penny and her family was a perfect idea. Alex would be free from his guilt and Penny would be trouble too. But what if her uncle looked into the matter because of her loose tongue. What if they found dirt on Alric and target Alex.

“Nora! Do not look for good things in them. They do not have any. That penny is rotten to the core. She had covered herself well. No one, even me, has ever known that she had so much malice in her heart. If she had done this, she would have suffered in jail. We should file a complaint against her.”

“She is not behind this. I heard they wanted to.. I mean! They wanted me.”
