Chapter 276: A Partner

The atmosphere in the room was heavy when Penny returned with her mother.

Sophia stared at her husband, who slightly shook his head making her grit her teeth.

She politely nodded as she sat on her seat.

“Amelia..” she started, “Kane had grown up into a fine gentleman. He is nineteen yet he has achieved so much. I am sure after entering the university, there would be a long line of suitors for him.” Amelia’s hands paused as she looked at the smiling woman. Her eyes fell on Penny again.

But she knew his son best. If he had set his heart that he did not want to marry Penny. Then he could not be forced. A professional smile appeared on her lips too.

“Ah! Yes. My son is still in the learning stage. I am in no hurry to choose a partner for him. I will let him choose one when he takes over my husband’s company. I am sure you have the same plans for your daughter. She is already this ambitious. I can see a bright future ahead.” Sophia had a hard time maintaining the smile on her face. She had already said it so clearly, yet Amelia played ignorant.

The woman was putting on airs because of Nora. if not for Nora, Amelia would be begging for Penny’s hands.

Ha! Her daughter did not lack suitors. She ignored Amelia as she nodded and continued with the dinner. The members noticed the change in mood. They have already congratulated Nora and discussed the deal with her too.

“It is too late for me, it was nice meeting you kids, but I must leave now.” a member stood up and greeted everyone before leaving.

David escorted the man personally. One by one members stood up and left. Penny’s friends wanted to linger more, but looking at her sour face and cold eyes, they left making some excuses too.

“Then, we should leave too.” Tristan and his family were the last to leave.

Now that she did not need to show manners, Sophia stood up and left the room with Penny. David sighed. He let go of the spoon he was holding and picked up the glass of wine.

“Your aunt could be conceited sometimes. You should not mind her.” he looked at Nora with a lost expression. Nora shook her head. She was impressed instead.

Her aunt had handled it well for a long time. In the past, Penny would have lunged on her already.

“Nora, you know she was never my first choice. In front of your mother, she was nothing. She is still jealous of her sister. That is why she is jealous of you.” Nora paused. A deep frown appeared on her face. She had seen smiling pictures of her mother with her aunt.

“Was my mother your first choice then?” The word left a nauseated expression on her face. To think that her uncle had feelings for the wife of his brother and sister of his wife. It sounds so twisted.

“Haha! You are a smart girl indeed. You are just like your mother. Smart but too arrogant and naive. Life did not work on love. She..” suddenly the door opened and Sohpia entered again. She was followed by two waitresses. They looked at the awkward atmosphere in the room and bowed their heads.

Without interfering they put the bill on the table and started cleaning the table.

“You have drunk too much.” Sophia paid the bill and passed a cold glance at her niece. She walked closer and wrapped her arms around David’s shoulder. She helped him in standing up.

David leaned at her. He seemed lost as if he did not recognize her.

“Are you going to sit there alone?” Nora shook her head and stood up as her aunt glared at her with the desire to kill.

Her aunt had always been cold to her. She had scolded her so many times or punished her for various reasons. But there was envy in her eyes tonight. A strange thought appeared in her mind and she wanted to confirm it no matter what the cost was.

“Uncle was telling me that you are mother..”

“Shut up!” Sophia hissed. Her body quivering with rage. “He knew nothing about your mother. You know nothing about her too. It would be better that you pay more attention to living than to the dead. Now go to the car or we will leave you behind.” She held her husband tightly. Making sure that all her nails dug deep into his skin.

Nora could see the fleeting hatred mixed with longing and felt something tightening in her chest.

She followed her aunt and uncle out of the hotel. The car drove in silence. Penny played a game on her mobile while Sophia drove the car. David was mumbling something in his unconscious state.

The words were nothing but jumbling but Sophia’s grip tightened on the wheel until her knuckles had turned white.

When the car stopped, Sophia waited for Penny and Nora to leave before she dragged out her husband and pulled him into their room.

Her body quivered as she let him go the moment they entered. David groaned hard as he fell on the ground instead of the soft bed.

“You!”

“You what!” she growled, her eyes had lost all its sanity. As she crouched in front of her husband and held him by his collar. “Do you even know who I am or are you still pining for that slut?” her chest heaved and her eyes looked bloodshot. “Did your old feelings sparked by looking at your own niece in that dress! Tell me did you imagine her with you already, you licentious man!” She wanted to kill him. But more than that, she wanted to kill the shadow of her sister in her life.
