Chapter 322: Turn The Tables
Xander took out some papers and threw them harshly on the table. It was clear that he was drunk and agitated. He wanted to win desperately and his actions were out of the line.
The manager standing behind frowned. He had only been nice because he had recognized Alric. This was not the man he could anger on their first visit. But it did not mean that he was going to stay put with this young girl.
“Sir, the madam is..” Alric titled his head and for a second the manager could not breath.
His eyes were so cold and dark as if they were sucking all the light around him.
“She is only trying to help her new partner. I’m sure the manager would not find an issue in that.” the man hesitated. There was no fixed rule that they could not sign dealings with each other. Often customers lend money from each other or from the gambling house. Both were allowed.
But this young woman was minor. The manager was sure she did not have the power to sign a contract. What did Alric want? Could he not see such a simple thing?
“Hmm, I think this would do.” Nora smiled brightly and placed the shared papers in her lap. The man near her had noticed it and scoffed.
“Though the Dawn ltd holds a good reputation. Its share is not valued this much. You are paying too high madam.” but Nora did not care. Since she was not going to lose a single coin here.
“Aah! Then two million would be enough.” The man wanted to refuse but when he noticed Xander glaring, he shut his mouth and looked away.
Nora kept staring at him with her watery eyes when the man did not reply, making the atmosphere around them awkward. This girl! She could not read the environment at all. He had already said so much, yet she wanted him to spell everything. It was so frustrating.
“Forget it. Are we playing or not? If not, we can leave at once.” The man stood up huffing and left.
Others stared at Nora while she blushed.
“Oh, then I will offer you two million Mr Xander. What do you say?” the man’s face turned sour instantly.
“If they do not want to play, I can accompany you for a game. I am sure poker could be played by two people too. That is what I read on the net.” read it on the net? It meant she had never played this game before.
Looking at her thrilled face and Alric’s dark face, they finally understood.
“No, no. We all play with two million then.” Xander still has his own money left. As long as the game goes as he had planned, he was going to win a lot more than he was putting in it.
The dealer began shuffling the cards as the atmosphere at the table thickened with tension. Nora clasped her hands together, leaning forward like an excited child, her sparkling eyes darting between the cards and the players. Her innocence was both captivating and infuriating to the seasoned gamblers at the table.
The first hand was dealt. Nora peeked at her cards, tilting them just enough to hide them from the others. She let out a soft gasp, then quickly covered her mouth with both hands. The gesture drew smirks from the players.
Xander narrowed his eyes. “What? Got a good hand already?” he sneered.
“Oh no!” Nora said, shaking her head frantically. “I just… Well, these cards are so pretty! Look at the little designs in the corners!” She held up a card to show the intricate pattern, eliciting groans from around the table.
Alric, standing behind her, pinched the bridge of his nose. He remained silent, though his lips pressed into a thin line.
The first round of betting began. Xander, riding high on his desperation and arrogance, threw in his chips with a smirk. “I’ll raise by half a million,” he announced loudly, glancing around the table to gauge reactions.
The other players exchanged wary glances but followed suit, matching his bet. When it came to Nora, she hesitated, biting her lip.
“Um… can I just, like… fold? Or do I have to play?” she asked, tilting her head to look at the dealer.
“You can fold, madam,” the dealer replied with a stiff smile.
“Oh, but that sounds boring,” she mused, then giggled. “I guess I’ll call!” She pushed her chips forward, earning another round of exasperated groans.
The flop was revealed: Ace of Hearts, King of Spades, and Queen of Diamonds.
Nora’s eyes widened, and she clapped her hands. “Oh! They are so shiny! Look at the ace!”
Xander rolled his eyes. “Focus, little girl. This isn’t a game for admiring cards.”

“Sorry, sorry!” she said, giggling again.
The betting resumed. Xander, emboldened by the high cards on the table, bet aggressively. “Another million,” he said, smirking at Nora.
The other players hesitated, with two folding immediately. The remaining players begrudgingly matched his bet, their faces grim.
When it came to Nora, she hesitated again, looking at her dwindling stack of chips. “Oh no, I’m almost out of money,” she said, her lower lip jutting out in a pout. “But… I’ll still call!” She pushed the chips forward, her enthusiasm unwavering.
The turn card was revealed: Jack of Clubs.
Xander’s smirk widened. “Perfect,” he muttered under his breath.
“Wow, it’s like a staircase!” Nora exclaimed. “Ace, King, Queen, Jack… what comes next? A ten?”
The table collectively groaned.
The final round of betting began, with Xander going all in. “Five million,” he declared, slamming his chips onto the table.
The remaining players hesitated. One folded, muttering something about bad luck, while another reluctantly called.
When it was Nora’s turn, she gasped dramatically. “Five million? Oh no! That’s all my money!” She looked at Alric, her eyes wide and pleading. “Honey, should I do it?”
Alric’s jaw clenched, but he gave a curt nod. “If you want to.”
“Yay!” she chirped, clapping her hands. “Then I’m all in, too!”
The river card was revealed: Ten of Hearts.
“Straight to the Ace,” Xander said smugly, slamming his cards onto the table: Ten of Diamonds and Ace of Spades.
The other players groaned in defeat, tossing their cards aside.
Nora blinked at the cards, tilting her head. “Oh, I guess I lost then?” She flipped her cards over, revealing Two of Hearts and Seven of Clubs.
The table erupted into laughter.
“You didn’t even have a pair!” one player exclaimed, shaking his head.
“Oh, well, it was fun anyway!” Nora said, her bright smile undimmed. She pushed her remaining chips forward, ready for the next hand.
Alric stood silently behind her, his dark eyes scanning the table. He could see the greedy glint in Xander’s eyes and the calculating expressions of the other players. This was going exactly as Nora had planned.
The second hand began, and this time, Nora’s actions were even more chaotic. She giggled, gasped, and made bizarre bets, losing another million without a care in the world.
By the end of the second hand, Xander was grinning like a predator who had just caught its prey. He had no idea that the prey was about to turn the tables.
