“Do you know how to cook?” The woman looked at Nat as if she was looking at an object and assessing its worth. “Or clean the house or you are totally dependent on the maid for every work?” The woman looked at Sarah to clear who she was talking about.

Sarar flinched and stiffened beside her. Now she was unsure if she should stay seated or stand up like maids. She was the housekeeper but it was not that different would it?

For the first time Nat felt good. But she hid it and shook her head.

“I cook mam. I have cooked a few times for Chris.” they took the name intimately. Even when she never wanted to marry Chris, using his mother would be good.

She could bring more secrets and then she could leave this damned place early.

The woman nodded, not looking pleased for some reason.

“What about other tasks!”

“I can do anything. Cleaning, cooking and groceries. I love gardening too. You have such a nice garden.” Nat smiled sweetly, making the woman frown.

“And you have a glib tongue. You know lying would not get you anywhere!” Why did this woman lie? Nat frowned and then looked at Sarah who shifted a bit in her position.

“Forget it! I should not be so choosy now that you are already pregnant. And as long as you are willing to learn, I will teach you a few things. But remember you have to be good to my son. I do not want to hear complaints if you get married to him.” the woman’s voice became harsh. “He is a busy man handling so much work by himself. It is only normal that he would be tense and irked a few times. As his wife, it is your duty to bear his responsibilities and help him with his release.

The woman was not picky! She only wanted to make sure that she did not complain about her son’s violence later like his earlier wives.

“You got it right!” the woman nodded as if she understood nat’s thoughts.

“As long as you are complacent, you will have a good life. My son is a rich man and very generous with gifts. And you were about to be sold as a prostitute. What better thing could you find in this life?” Nat held her dress tightly and nodded.

“I understand, madam.” the woman started for a long time before nodding.

“If you are willing, I will prepare a contract tomorrow. You can read it and take your time to decide. But once you sign it, you can not leave. Did you get it?” when Nat nodded again the woman finally smiled genuinely.

“I have been looking for you for some time. And I am sure you would be a good wife. I hope we both can get along well, my dear. And do not worry, I will take good care of the child.” the woman smiled and signalled the maids to bring snacks and tea.

“Sarah! Tell my son to come and meet me. We can not pospotone this much or her belly would show in their wedding.” the housekeeper stood up at once and nodded.

“And once they get married, you will be the one taking care of them. I will give you a good bonus and send one more maid to help you with taking care of the child. You did a good job.” The housekeeper beamed with joy while the two maids filled the table with snacks and tea.

“Go on and eat what you like. There is no need to be reserved. We will be family soon.” Nat felt a knot in her stomach. It was hard to breathe and all she wanted was to run away.

But she forced a smile on her face and picked up tea. It tasted like lead, but Nat took a sip and faked the joy.

The woman smiled further and explained about their great past. How they have struggled when Chris was young and how this young boy had single handedly created so much wealth and elevated their status.

As Nat heard intently, she realized this woman kept her son in high regard. As if he was a god! She worships his violent son. No wonder he treats women like shit. His mother had taught him so.

Hours passed as the woman ended her long and vivid story. Nat already looked tired when she was done.

“You are too thin or weak? Only sitting can tire you?” she frowned when Nat looked exhausted and wanted to rest for a while. She shook her head looking disappointed. “Well, as long as you give a healthy birth. Stay here for tonight. I will take you to my doctor for a check up tomoree and then drop you to Chris;s house.” nat nodded at once.

Security here was much lax. Nat did not notice any kind of cameras and the hall even had a landline. She could use it later.

“But madam, sir would be angry. As I have told you, he needs her every night.” the woman smirked and waved her hands as if it was not a big deal.

“If he wanted to sleep with her, he could come here too. I must take her for a check up tomorrow. I want to know whether it is a boy or a girl.” the woman announced in a commanding voice.

The housekeeper looked worried but she did not have the courage to argue again so she bit her lips and nodded.

“Then I must leave alone. I could not start here.” the woman waved her hands at dismissal. Sarah looked at Nat with a warning glare before leaving.

“Now go and sleep! You look like I have tormented you.”
