Chapter 425: Prove It Tonight
“Are you in there?” Nora turned to look at the door. Alric was standing with a look of concern on his face again. She knew that she was worrying him. But the chains were so strong that she could not get rid of them. Even when she was being suffocated to death. She was welcoming this pain.
“Yes, I was just… studying.” Alric stared at the book Nora was holding with a smile before nodding.
Nora looked at the book and realized she had already given an economics exam yesterday. She forgot to change the book.
She watched as Alric came in and sat on the chair beside her bed. His eyes staring at the books and then moving to her face in the end.
“You seem too worried about exams. If you need any help, I can teach you. I was good at my studies.” She was too. And he knew that! But he was playing the game alone and still wanted to help her with whatever demons she was facing.
Nora closed the book in her hands and sighed.
“I wish I could explain to you, Alric. But I am confused. I do not know how to explain everything.” Nora shook her head. Her eyes showed strange sadness and emptiness that scared Alric.
She had been cold before meeting him. He had always felt that she was enduring pain that was killing her but it was never that intense. These days, she feels like a walking corpse. As if she had witnessed death. Not only hers but her loved ones.
He had investigated her recent activities but he found nothing wrong. The company was flourishing in her care. Her other businesses were thriving too. Her uncle was still missing. But he was not a threat. He had left many men. As soon as the man would come out, his men would catch him. Penny was still in the prison.
She looks imbecile these days. She could not even be called a threat anymore. Yet, Nora looked like someone was strangling her. He wanted to believe it was her exams, her studies but she was making it hard for him with that distant looks.
He had planned so much for her special day. For their special day. He had thought they would… Now he did not even know if she wanted to continue with this marriage.
His eyes hardened just with the thought of it. No! He could not let her go. He had to find a chance to convince her. Know what was troubling her and solve the issue all at once.
“You do not need to explain to me if you do not want to. But if you want to tell me something, you do not need to worry about words. You can tell me anything and I will listen to it. I will not judge you, Nora.” he leaned closer and pulled the book from her hands.
Then he closed it and put it aside.
“As long as you are happy, I do not care whether you clear these exams or not.” Nora watched the desperation in his eyes and sighed.
She closed her eyes, trying to fight the emptiness there. His care was making her guilty now.
“I can not be a failure.” she tilted her head to the side so that she did not need to look into his eyes. “I have to work hard to stand beside you, Alric. I want to be your equal.” she added, making him frown.
He leaned closer and covered her hands with his. His grip was loose enough that she could pull her hands away whenever she wanted. He pulled her so that she would face him again.
“You are my equal Nora. At the age of seventeen I was still struggling with my first company. I didn’t even know many things you knew. If not for Ava’s sister taking pity on me or seeing the enemy in me, I would have still been struggling. She helped me, trained me and taught me all she knew.” it must be hard for him to accept it. She knew his family was his weak point.
“And you did a wonderful job.” she smiled, straining his face. He stared at her, knowing well that she was trying to change the subject.
“And you are doing much better. You were fine just a few weeks ago. But since that girl became pregnant, you have changed. Nora! I am no fool. So do not treat me like one. Even if you do not want to share your worries, at least be truthful to me.” his gaze hardened.
“There are things I can not explain even if I want to! But be assured, I am not having second thoughts about you or this marriage.” she tried to assure but her words only made him infuriated. His eyes darkened further and his lips parted. She could see veins in her hands. His clenched jaw and closed her eyes to calm herself.
“Do you think I only worry about you because I am worried you will not marry me? Am I that desperate in your eyes?” she did not know how to reply to that! Nora bit her lips as she watched him taking deep breaths.
He was trying hard to control his anger, failing it. Suddenly he stood up. Just when she thought that he would leave the room, he bent and scooped her up in his arms.
“Alric!” she wrapped her arms around his neck for support as she frowned at him. “Let me go. I am not in the mood.” Alric hissed as he looked at her with a dark gaze. Strong enough to even silence her.
“Why nora? Did you not say that you are not having second thoughts about me?” he whispered the same words, yet she felt guilty hearing them from him. “Since you think I only want you for my own benefit, I might as well prove it to you tonight.”
