Chapter 471: Hiding From My Girlfriend!
Nat felt her chest tightened but she ignored it. She wanted to ask why she was here then? He could have found much experienced housekeepers who would not burn his house and keep it perfect. Not that there was anything to clean or do.
She opened her mouth but did not ask the question. She was afraid of the answer or afraid that she would know it was true.
She looked away and stood up.
“I should go clean the kitchen. You can order. And cut it from my salary.” she nodded with a solemn face before leaving the room.
Max sighed. He looked at the room that belonged to him last night. “We need to go shopping.”
Nat watched at the door. Her mind is uneasy. She had thought Max would follow her but he was still in her room. She shook her head. This house belongs to him and so does that room.
The doorbell rang, surprising her. Did he already order the food? But just as she reached her, her hands froze on the doorknob. She heard voices, whispers of laughing men, guns, warnings and then… she felt a hand. Nat jumped and kicked and then she started struggling.
“Let me go! Let me go.” She kicked and punched and elbowed hard without listening, without waiting as she struggled hard.
The grip on her hand loosened and she fell on the ground and limped away. Only to see Max standing there with a broken nose and bleeding hand. Her eyes widened, horror filled them. Not like it was crawling under her skin before, asking her to fight. But a new kind of horror that was filled with guilt and remorse.
“I can not live here.” she gasped. It would be fine if she was only burning the kitchen but she was killing the man inside the house.
Max looked alarmed by her words. He paused, wiping his nose and walked closer to her slowly, watching her expression.
“You were opening the door, I stopped you. Your panic and actions were natural.” he explained and she laughed. A low humorless, self mocking laugh.
“Which of my actions do you find normal, Doc. Because I feel like I need a doctor.” her voice was heavy with sarcasm, but he only nodded sincerely.
“And I am a doctor.” the way he said it a matter of factly, Nat opened her mouth and closed it.
“Why are you even doing it?” a lump formed on her throat as she slumped on the floor and shrunk like a fetus.
Max sighed, feeling the heartache. He sat beside her and when she did not flinch, he touched her forehead, wiped the sweat from his handkerchief and tucked strayed hair behind her ears.
“I have been here once, I know how it feels. You are just scared unconsciously, and I am testing your limits. I should have called you first instead of touching you unannounced. As a doctor, I failed, Natalie. It is not your mistake.” she looked at him with the eyes of a scared child who wanted someone to hold her. He could not look away, he was arrested in that gaze.
“You are too kind, Doc. for your own good. You will suffer with me.” he smiled at that and pulled her. She let him touch, despite the crawling of her skin and the desire to itch the part he was touching, she held her breath and let him do it.
“I know that you do not like it. But I still do it because you need to let go of your fears. But I am forcing you too much. Even now, I am waiting for you to push me away but you are not. Who is kind here?” Nat blinked and then looked away as he let her go immediately.
“I didn’t mean to scare you. But there was no food delivery on the door. I wanted to stop you before you open the door.” the door! She forgot about it completely. It was not knocking anymore.
“Who was at the door then?” she asked, looking curiously at the door and standing up.
“A ghost from the past.” Nat frowned and Max sighed.
“I have a girlfriend.” Nat nodded. It was only natural for a man like Max to have a girl in his life. “But, I do not like it when she visits me. So I often do not open the door for her. When she calls me, I tell her that I am in the hospital.” that made Nat blink. Was he serious?
“What if she goes to the hospital to meet you?” she asked curiously.
“My assistant knows about it. He would tell her I am in surgery or something and ask her to wait. She would wait for an hour and two and then leave feeling irritated.” he shrugged as if it was only normal.
“Why are you doing this? If you do not like her, break up with her.” Max opened his mouth, closed it and looked away.
“For now, it is like that. I want you to ignore her. Always check before opening the door. Alright?” Nat wanted to know more but looking at his reluctant face, she nodded and decided to leave him alone.
Max sighed. He did not understand why he did not like her when she was putting so much effort. They have even done it when he was drunk. He shook his head and ordered the food. It was delivered in an hour. Nat had cleaned everything by then.
He picked up his part and left for his room. After closing the door, he was not hungry at all. He looked at the small wounds on his arm. She had scratched badly. And the kick.. He shook his head. He should be worried. Why was he feeling proud that she fights well?
