Chapter 480: I Promise!
“No! We do not need this.” Nat shook her head when she looked at the large swing. Yes, it was beautiful and there was no doubt it would be comfortable. That was why she was sitting on it in the first place. But no, she did not want it.

“Why not?” Max frowned and did not move away when she stood up.

“Because you do not need it.” she reasoned but he did not look convinced.

“I need it.” and then he walks away. Seriously! Nat looked at him bewildered.

“Where do we even keep it? You do not have a backyard garden or open space in your house.” She had to jog to meet his speed.

He realized it and suddenly started walking slowly.

“We can keep it on the porch or in the sun room. You can open windows and sit there on it.” Nat onl frowned deeper. So she was right. He was buying it for her.

“But…” It made her uneasy and suddenly at a loss. “I will be there only for a few months, doc. You do not need to buy furniture keeping me in mind.” That was when Max stopped looking stunned. Nat could not meet his eyes and lowered her head.

“You are planning to leave?” The innocent words felt accusative as if she was abandoning someone. She gulped and did not speak further but his piercing gaze was making her uneasy.

Why did it look like she was the cruel one? She laughed uneasily to lighten the atmosphere but he did not smile back. His solemn face made her nervous.

“I can not live there forever.”

“Why not?” the question came before she could finish, choking her on the rest of her words.

“I will give birth soon.” she added and he nodded but looked at her foolishly.

“Forget it! We do not need it.” she snapped and walked away. She could not speak with him like this.

He watched her leaving back.

“We are buying it, Natalie. No more arguments.” she bit her lips and did not turn back to meet his eyes. Asshole! She never knew he could be so stubborn.

“Would he buy anything if I like? Why? What is he to me?” she whispered to herself. But when she stopped, she realized he had not followed her. She turned to look around and could not find him anywhere.

Uneasiness grew in her heart when she noticed four men laughing over something near her. They noticed her and paused. One of them smirked at her, giving an interesting look. The other turned to look at her too. One of them winked and her heart raced.

She could feel her knees giving away and she froze. The men noticed that she stopped while looking at them. They smiled and one of them approached. Nat could feel her body getting numb and a strange pain reaching for every nerve in her body.

“Hey! What is your name?” the man asked in a sweet voice, leaning closer and giving her a charming smile.

But it only increased her horror. She stood there frozen. The man finally noticed there was something wrong with her expression. She looked terrified.

He looked back at his friends and then at her.

“Hey! We do not bite. We only want to know your name. We are friendly people.” he laughed to make her at ease. But she hiccuped and her eyes widened like a deer under the light.

She wanted to flee but her feet just did not move. Tears started to brim in her eyes.

“Her name is laura.” a firm voice came behind her. They all looked at once and found a tall and strong man coming closer.

“Oh! Are you with him?” understanding downed and the man took a step back. “No offence brother. I thought she was alone.”He raised his head in defense and walked away toward his friends.

They gave one look to Nat. but Max had already reached toward her and looked into her eyes. When she nodded, he held her hand possessively.

“Tsk! The couple might be fighting.” he pulled her away so she could not hear them anymore. Her heart was in her throat. She was about to faint but his presence was like an anchor, holding her tightly.

She did not shiver anymore. And for some reason, she felt warm and secure.

“Thank you.” she whispered softly but he did not react to that. So, she raised her head to look at them. She regretted it instantly for he looked furious. She had never seen him angry. So she flinched.

“Something could have happened!” he whispered when he noticed she was looking at her. And her face paled.

“Yes!” she accepted in defeat.

“I know that I was too careless. I am sorry.”

“I can not imagine what could have happened because of my carelessness, Nat. I am sorry.”

“….

“….”

“Why are you sorry?” The way he asked that question tugged something in her heart. Why was she sorry!? She was sorry because it was her responsibility to keep herself safe. He was doing it for her and yet she threw a tantrum and walked away.

She should be following him.

“Why…” her voice choked as she fought the tears forming in her eyes. Her throat felt heavy. “Why are you so sorry?” she asked back looking into his eyes.

“Because I let you go.” He took a step closer and his minty smell enveloped her completely. He was not touching her yet she felt his breath caress her skin and she shivered.

“I will never let you go again.” he added with a solemn look as if he was taking a vow and her breath hitched. She felt lost in his eyes, in the heat coming from his body. Her heart skipped a breath listening to her and then it beat erratically.

“You.. you promise?” he frowned when her voice came shaky. He held her hands and squeezed them in assurance.

“Yes, I promise. You will always be safe with me.”
