Chapter 76: A Scandal

Alric drove the car faster. He had no destination in mind. His phone was already on mute, but in the silent car, even its vibrations make a noise strong enough to get his attention. His eyes started to turn colder and colder. In the end, he picked up the phone and threw it on the backseat.

The phone cracked and finally it stopped ringing. Alric stopped the car and came out. He had already driven to the hospital even when he had no destination in his mind.

He stared at the large building. Many people were coming in and going out. He took out a cigarette and lit it but he did not put it in his mouth but kept holding it in his hands as he watched the crying couple.

His eyes settled on the unconscious child they were holding in their arms.

“I have already told you to contact the charity section. Our hospital did take those kinds of cases but not in the emergency ward. Go there and explain your issues. I am sure they will help. Now please leave the way for others.” The staff was still polite as they explained to the parents. But the parents keep crying and begging. At one point, the staff lost his temper and felt irked.

But before he could say so, Alric had already walked to them.

“What is the issue?” His voice was calm but a layer of frost had covered his face.

“Sir!” The man was surprised. “This child here is suffering from pneumonia. I have informed them about her charity patients ward. But they are begging that I take the child to the emergency ward. I would have considered it if the child needed emergency treatment but he is not in life danger. I have explained it thrice already but the couple did not listen and create a scene.” The man looked exhausted while dealing with the couple.

When the couple heard the respectful voice, they looked at Alric with bright eyes.

“We have heard that this hospital provides free treatment to the needy. We have come from afar. But now they are telling us that we can only get treated in the charity section. But I want better facilities for my son. I want him to be treated immediately.” the woman announced in a demanding tone making the staff panic again.

“Hey! Do you know who the man is? You can not talk to him like that.” he warned the woman only to get a snicker in return.

“Why? Is he the owner of the hospital? Even if he is! He should take responsibility for his words. Whole newspaper was covered with news that this hospital is free for the needy. I am needy but you have not even let me in so far.” her voice was loud enough making Alric frown.

Before he could say something, he noticed five reporters coming toward the door. By now, a good crowd was collected to see the show.

The woman kept scolding Alric in a vicious tone.

“My child.. He is suffering. I have come so far with so many expectations only to realize that it was a fraud. I should have realized that it was a gimmick!” Alric looked at the child in her arms with a deep frown.

“Madam, this is an emergency ward. Even if you were paying, we would not take your child because the emergency ward is only for life and death suffering patients.” the staff tried to explain again when he noticed the crowd collecting.

“Dave, take the child to the ward for now.” Alric understood the intentions of the couple. He did not want a scandal so he relented, making the man sigh.

He understood the intentions and nodded. But the woman did not move an inch.

“Ha! Now that the crowd has gathered, you are worried about your image and letting me in. What if you threw me out once the crowd had gone? How could I trust people like you? I will seek justice through them. I will tell them how you treat poor patients that come for help here.” She started again in a louder voice to attract more people.

The reporters were stopped by the guards or they would have already surrounded the woman. Alric was already in a bad mood when he had left his house but now, he was boiling with anger. How he wanted to slap the woman to shut her. But he only rubbed his forehead, suppressing his rage.

“What grievances have you borne so far?” but before he could ask the woman to F# off and he did not care, a clear voice rang at the entrance.

A young girl came forward with a smile on her face. “Did they not offer you treatment?” she asked again when the woman glared at her.

“Yes, they did not let me enter even when I begged them for hours. They told me I can only get treatment in the charity ward.” she paid extra stress to Charity word making Nora smile.

“And you did not check it because you do not want to be part of charity even when you are asking for free treatment.” Nora asked in a sweet voice as she nodded her head in understanding. With her expressions it was hard to guess if she was on her side or against her so the woman did not reply to her for a second but looked around.

“Did you even go there and check it?” Nora repeated as she extended her hands to take the child. The woman pulled the child closer to her chest but even her hands were giving up. The child was heavier.

“Master Alric. Since the reporters here wanted to cover the news for you, you should allow them. After all, everyone wants to know the truth and they have the right to do so.” Alric stared at her with a cold face. No one knew what he was thinking but when they were sure he would refuse, he slowly nodded his head toward the guards.

“Let them in!”
