Chapter 216: Detailing the Ranks (1)
Dark Elf’s POV
I adjusted my fake glasses and held up my brush, ready to record their information.
Third Person’s POV
The dark elf adjusted her glasses once more and her sharp demeanor returned the instant business was mentioned.
“Judging by the absence of rank tags, you must be new. May I have your names and affiliations?” she asked with a composed tone of a professional.
She smoothly withdrew a sheet of aged goatskin parchment along with a fine-tipped quill, poised to take notes.
“Eryndor Sangrial,” Ethan replied smoothly and flashed a faint smile as his red eyes glowed faintly.
She paused slightly on hearing Ethan’s fake surname though the thought of ‘as expected’ crossed into her mind.
“And these are my companions, Virese and Velcy. And as you noted, we are currently unaffiliated.”
He used a false name for Virelle. If he mentioned her real identity, it would defeat the purpose of her hiding her beautiful features and real identity under her modest veil.
The receptionist’s eyes flickered as she finally seemed to acknowledge and register the presence of the two women.
She regarded Velcy’s scarred visage with professional indifference, as though accustomed to battle-worn adventurers.
When her eyes fell on Virelle, there was only a slight surprise and the kind that one might show upon seeing a beautiful, veiled woman.
Ethan, however, had a subconscious feeling that the elf woman was only pretending and faking her reactions.
He couldn’t shake the suspicion that she was more perceptive than she let on.
The dark elf receptionist nodded briskly as her slender fingers danced across the parchment.
“Very well. To proceed, all new applicants must undergo an initial assessment to receive their guild ranks. Only then can you form or join a team,” she explained in a measured tone.
“For that, each of you must display a sample of your abilities.”
As she spoke, Ethan’s mind briefly wandered.
The bustling hall, the faint scent of ink and leather, and the enigmatic woman before him made the guild feel more than just a mere checkpoint.
As she finished her explanation, Ethan couldn’t shake the feeling that this encounter was more significant than it appeared.
While following her, Ethan couldn’t help but feel a strange connection to the dark elf, as if their fates were intertwined.
He had a weird inner feeling that this would definitely be not the first or the last meeting he would have with this woman.
A pair of feline-like beast kin whispered in a corner while their tails flicked nervously.
“Understood,” Ethan said, his voice carrying a hint of authority but devoid of the haughtiness often associated with nobles.
“We are ready to proceed.”
The dark elf’s lips curved into a faint smile while her eyes shimmered with something unreadable.
“Follow me, then. The testing grounds are this way.”
They followed her toward one of the many corridors that branched from the grand hall as their footsteps echoed softly.
Suddenly, Ethan felt a light tug on his sleeve.
Follow new episodes on the "N0vel1st.c0m".
He turned and saw Virelle gesturing subtly toward a nearby wall. His gaze followed her direction and landed on a large board that resembled the task notice boards from his previous life.
The group came to a halt as their attention was fixed on the board.
The title carved at the top read: Ranks in the Adventurer Guild.
Catching this, the dark elf turned and offered a knowing smile while they realized what they were looking at.
“This section is essential reading for all new adventurers to familiarise themselves with the basic structure and the hierarchy of the Adventurer Guild,” she explained smoothly.
“It effectively outlines the guild’s rank system and details the duties and privileges that come with each rank.”
“You should take your time to familiarize yourselves with it,” she added with a calm patience. “I will wait here.”
Ethan gave a nod and flashed a small appreciative smile at her for her consideration and polite service up till now.
Suddenly, he felt a pinch on his waist and turned his head to see Virelle glaring at him. He frowned in annoyance but she sent a sound transmission.
‘Focus here, Brother Ethan. You don’t need to be so polite toward that elf girl. She is just a receptionist.’
He nodded silently but inwardly shook his head at her words.
Still, he could understand where she was coming from.
Coming from the upper echelons of society, it was natural for Virelle to feel disdain toward a commoner woman who seemed to draw both his attention and offer her own subtle interest in return.
Ethan dismissed it quietly and turned his focus back to the board.
Note: This is a general outline of guild ranks and responsibilities. Exceptions may and definitely exist, and it is not rare for warriors to not fit into this description.
Ethan silently agreed with the caution and continued reading below.
1. Scrap Rank (Novices & Commoners)
Scrap Rank adventurers occupy the very bottom of the Adventurer Guild hierarchy.
Many are commoners seeking a better life, criminals hoping for redemption, or desperate souls with no other options in life.
They generally lack combat experience and are often viewed as burdens rather than real adventurers.
They are usually required to be at least at the beginning of the Acolyte Mage or Warrior Stage of the Divine Ascension Path.
Usual Missions:
Their usual missions involve menial tasks like delivering messages for the customers, cleaning guild halls, or working in the stables of the clients of the Guild.
They may also be sent to nearby forests to fetch herbs or minor alchemical ingredients.
Most often, they carry supplies for higher-ranked adventurers and are seldom permitted to enter dungeons or engage in monster hunts.
2. Bronze Rank (Also known as Rookie Adventurers)
Bronze Rank adventurers are said to be the kind who have taken their first step into true adventuring.
While they are still inexperienced, they are at least capable of wielding weapons and hunting small creatures while traveling between towns without constant supervision.
