Chapter 328: The Blond Girl
Third Person’s POV

“My guess is that only those Heaven Connection beings, the ones the world calls the forbidden ones, can fly directly to the Sanctum and the Kill Tower located on the mountain top.

Perhaps the Devil Abyss doesn’t affect them, but no one has ever witnessed anyone flying across it.”

Ethan nodded at her conjecture and silently agreed that he had reached the same conclusion after Virelle’s mention of possible exceptions.

The notion that the abyss itself might recognize the forbidden beings as the only ones capable and deserving enough added another shiver to the mystery of this place.

Suddenly, a piercing scream split the air ahead of them, and they looked up in sudden shock.

Reacting instinctively, Ethan turned to see a figure rolling chaotically toward them with its limbs flailing helplessly as it bounced and skidded across the curved bronze surface of the Spinal Rope.

Without hesitation, Ethan raised his hand, and a stealthy umbra chain erupted from his arm and coiled around Velcy’s shoulder to secure her.

Another dark tendril lashed forward like a strike of black lightning and raced toward the tumbling figure.

His soul sense flared as he commanded the chain with precision.

It moved like a living shadow in an amazingly fluid and fast motion and wrapped tightly around the flailing figure just moments before it was about to fall down the wire to its death in the dark abyss below.

The impact halted the figure mere feet away from him, and its momentum dissipated.

Before Ethan could even assess the rescued individual, a shrill, broken cry rang out.

“Brother!!!”

The figure, who clearly looked to be a young girl, was pointing frantically into the abyss.

Ethan followed her shaking finger and instantly his sharp senses narrowed on a small, fast-disappearing yellow blur plummeting into the endless dark.

It vanished in seconds and was swallowed whole by the void below.

He blinked with shock as his eyes narrowed even further in grim understanding.

The girl, who was now caught in a storm of panic and grief, trembled violently.

She looked around with wide and tear-glazed eyes while her voice started choking with horror.

Her appearance suggested that she was roughly fifteen or sixteen, though her youthful face was currently streaked with dirt, tears, and fresh scrapes.

Her small twin white horns curved slightly backward and were clear markers of her demon heritage.

Yet Ethan knew not to judge her age by her human-like features, as it was common knowledge that demonkin matured slowly, and she could very well be around his age of eighteen or nineteen,

Grief contorted her face into a mask of pain as she tried to lunge forward while being driven by pure instinct and the shock of witnessing her brother’s fall.

Knowing her mental state, Ethan swiftly restrained her and held her firmly as she struggled futilely.

He turned to Virelle with furrowed brows as he silently asked about what he should do in this case, as this wasn’t the place for emotional chaos, and a single misstep born from grief could doom them all.

The girl’s resistance waned slightly as she met his gaze.

Anger flickered in her big blue eyes, but behind it, a mix of hopelessness and gratitude at being saved lingered.

She seemed to understand there was no way back for her brother, and his rescue was no longer possible.

And in that terrible understanding, her struggling weakened, and her body slumped slightly in despair.

Seeing this, Virelle moved without hesitation.

Sensing the shift in the girl’s will, and not willing to risk any of her further outbursts, she stepped forward and delivered a swift backhanded strike to her neck.

The girl slumped unconscious and was automatically cradled in Ethan’s steady arms.

He gave Virelle a brief, half-speechless look with equal parts amusement and resignation at the same time.

But catching her nod, he sighed and hoisted the girl over his shoulder with ease and secured her gently in a firm hold.

They continued walking in silence with the trio diving once more into their somber and steady rhythm.

From afar, one might think the unconscious girl was a prisoner being carried by her captor, but the truth was far more complex.

This small incident totally went unnoticed by any other people.

The ropes stretched vast and were distant from each other, with each of their paths wide and isolated enough that such sounds of this degree did not carry, nor did events draw attention unless it was too major to ignore.

The journey on the Spinal Ropes was lonely by nature and built upon the silence of ancient fear and practical caution.

Soon, hours passed as the trio trudged steadily along the thick bronze spine, and eventually, the looming crimson haze that cloaked the Devil Abyss Mountain began to reveal itself.

The mountain’s crown vanished into the swirling, rust-colored clouds that were perpetually suspended like a world unto itself.

At a silent consensus, they paused here for a small respite.

Ethan lowered the unconscious girl and sat carefully upon the worn surface of the rope. His gaze drifted backwards down the path they had just traversed.

The girls followed his lead, and their eyes widened as they finally saw it.

The wire stretched back endlessly and dipped into the distant horizon where the red-dusted wastelands began.

Small hills and the faintest outline of their former route became visible beneath the shifting clouds.

And below it all, like a sleeping ring of oblivion, was the great dark abyss, like an eternal, silent, and unbroken well of death.

The depth was too dizzying and almost unreal.

Ethan took a deep breath and exhaled slowly. His fingers reached out in a calming motion as he gently patted Virelle and Velcy, as he attempted to calm and anchor them again in the present.

No words were exchanged between the trio, but the silent message they shared was clear and crisp.

They did not have to linger in awe or fear of the sight below.
