Chapter 101: _So Much For ‘Keeping Calm’

I stomped my foot repeatedly, glancing out of my suite window occasionally.
This was the second day since Phoebe left.
I still couldn’t believe she’d just sneaked out of the mansion that night without telling me anything.
Or… Maybe I could believe it.
“I guess she was unable to handle the embarrassment she was getting from everyone in the mansion.” I scoffed to myself, finally stepping away from the window.
Before she left, she’d tried having dinner alongside me, my mother, Elsa, and Mr. Thatcher.
After Mr. Thatcher brought his preposition of me marrying his daughter and making him the new Beta, I told him I would think about it and suggested he stayed back for dinner that night.
Who would’ve thought things would have unfolded to become so dramatic?
After asking a few questions, I was able to discover that Phoebe fled the estate that same night, seeking refuge at her parents’ house.
I was tempted to go after her and bring her back but my mother wasn’t having it.
Suddenly, I heard a knock on my door, forcing me to glance backward after coming back to reality. “Come in.”
The door opened and Lyra, my assistant, walked in holding a glass of what seemed like tea.
I sighed when I saw that, removing my gaze from her.
“Good morning, sir. Your mother said I should give you this tea.” She announced with a hesitant tone after walking up to me.
I glanced at her again, folding my arms in front of my chest. “Mom knows very well that I don’t like tea. Take this back to her and get me some alcohol or something.” I said with a dismissive wave.
But I didn’t hear any attempt by Lyra to get out of my suite, forcing me to swerve my head to her with a questioning arch of my eyebrows.
She stiffened at first but then gathered the confidence to speak. “Alpha, your mother insisted. She said the recipe for this tea is meant to calm you and make you–”
“I don’t care if the tea is meant to increase my knowledge of the universe, Lyra!” I snapped but then held myself back when I realized that it wasn’t the poor girl’s fault.
I rubbed my forehead, muttering soon after. “Never mind, just drop it on the table beside my bed.”
Lyra nodded her understanding and walked to the table, dropping the tea.
She was about to walk away when I called her back. “Lyra? Is there any update on Phoebe?”
I’d assigned my assistant to place tabs on my mate. As much as I hated her right now and wanted nothing more than to take her through hell and back for what she did… I also cared about her deeply.
It was because of the cursed mate bond!
“Not really, sir. But the last our sources saw her, she and her family seemed to have invited some guests over last night.” Lyra revealed.
My brows furrowed upon hearing that.
Guests?
I took a step forward, dimming my eyes. “Get them to get an update on her today. I want to know what she’s up to.” I stated before dismissing her with a wave.
Lyra nodded her understanding and excused herself out of the suite.

However, when she opened the door and stepped out, Elsa walked in, glancing at her for a bit before focusing her gaze on me.
She closed the door behind her, a smile curling up her lips.
Ugh, not her…
“Good morning, my Alpha. How was your night?” She asked casually.
She wore a handless dark green satin dress, her blonde hair flowing freely behind her.
I eyed her for a bit before mumbling. “It was lovely, Elsa.”
Just then, I remembered the tea my mother brought me and grabbed it off the table beside my bed.
I drank half of it in one gulp, ignoring the fact that it was hot and almost hurting my throat in the process.
‘So much for its calming recipe.’ I thought to myself as I gazed at Elsa again.
She skipped happily toward me, wrapping her arms around mine and sticking close to my body.
“Your mother said I should come to check up on you. You still didn’t go to work today, my Alpha.” She said with a curious gaze in her eyes.
I ignored her, placing my focus outside. “I don’t have to go to work. My assistant and other shareholders in the company are more than capable of handling things while I’m gone.” I explained.
She nodded her head, placing her hand on my chest and trailing it up to my face.
My body stiffened at first but then my brows quickly snapped into a frown as I gazed down at her hand.
“What are you doing?” I queried sternly, taking her by surprise.
She blinked awkwardly, but still kept her hand on my face. “I– I’m just so happy to see you, my Alpha. And I–”
“We saw yesterday and the day before, Elsa,” I uttered with disdain in my eyes. “Whatever you think you’re doing here, it’s not going to work. I’m not interested.”
She seemed hurt, withdrawing her hands from my body.
But then her face flared with anger as she threw her hands listlessly into the air. “Don’t tell me it’s because of that classless mate of yours? The same one who–”
“Choose your next words carefully, Elsa,” I said with an icy tone, raising a finger and pointing it at her face. “Remember you’re still a suspect for leaking out information about the affair. The information which I specifically told you and the rest of the nobles not to spread.”
Elsa breathed heavily, looking lost on what to say.
Seeing this, I ignored her, walking past her and heading to the door.
However, her silence didn’t last for long as she snapped. “I thought Delta Asher already proved that I’m innocent?!”
My head hurt just by hearing her voice.
I turned my head to her after placing my hand on the doorknob, a plain expression on my face.
“You can keep the whole suite if you want, Elsa. I need to clear my head.” I muttered flatly.
She gawked at me speechlessly but I’d already opened the door and was about to step outside.
However, I almost barged into Lyra who was just about to step into the suite from the look of things.
“Lyra, what is it?” I asked warily when I noticed the complicated expression on her face.
She raised her head, staring into my eyes as she struggled to speak. “It’s… It’s Luna Phoebe, sir. She… She…” She trailed off.
I grew impatient but managed to keep my cool as I asked. “What about Phoebe?”
She fiddled nervously with her fingers at first but then gathered the boldness to speak. “She was involved in an accident, sir.”
