Chapter 114: _Lovey-Dovey Bullshit
Kaene stared at me when I was done speaking, seemingly speechless.
He took another sip of that weird tea, drumming his fingers on the armrest of his chair as he continued scrutinizing me.
Jeez, with all this staring you’d think he’d ask me on a date next.
Anyway, he finally shook his head, rubbing the bridge of his nose before he continued. “Why did you come to my office, Negan?”
Huh… Was he using my name already?
Looks like it would be easier than I thought to regain the fool’s trust.
“Actually, I came here to report to you that the Brittany girl committed suicide sometime during midnight,” I revealed with a calm expression, awaiting the Alpha’s next words.
However, he only stared at me with a stoic expression, not even looking a bit shocked.
After a few moments of awkward silence, he coughed, placing his arms on the desk. “The Delta already gave me this report, Negan. That’s what he came to my office to do.” He stated.
Oh…
I nodded, pretending like I wasn’t a bit stunned by the Delta’s cunning move.
He was vying to gain the Alpha’s trust as well.
“Delta Asher also informed me that you and the other members of the Council unanimously agreed to keep what happened with Brittany a secret to not… ‘disturb me’.” He pushed on, his piercing gaze seeming a bit more intimidating now.
For a quick second, I got a glimpse of the ruthless Alpha of Blue Moon.
It was an exhilarating feeling, especially since I hadn’t seen this side of him ever since he found out about the affair.
However, that side of him fell like a mask when I saw a flicker of an unexpected emotion in his eyes.
It was a deep disappointment, the kind that leaves one feeling like they are alone.
Ugh… Please!
“Yes, Alpha, myself, and the other members of the Alpha Council didn’t want to alarm you yet until we’d properly investigated the case and ensured there was nothing we were missing,” I explained, my tone remaining calm.
However, Kaene didn’t seem too pleased with what I said.
“That was not your decision to make, Beta Negan.” He shook his head, getting up from his seat.
I arched an eyebrow, wondering what he was doing until he walked toward me, each step seemingly carrying all the resentment and hurt he held in his heart.
His fists were clenched and his face tense, as if whatever he was about to say or do next was difficult.
Just when he got in front of me, he swerved his head to his assistant, his gaze falling briefly on the glass of tea on the desk.
“Lyra, please go tell my mother to help pour me another glass of her tea.” He instructed, turning his gaze back to me.
His assistant nodded her understanding and grabbed the glass before walking away.
I couldn’t help but notice the odd way she glanced at me as she walked past but paid no heed to it when Kaene did the unexpected and placed his hand on my shoulder.
“This… The whole series of events has made me realize something that I wish I had realized sooner.” He blurted, his voice a little shaky.
I cringed hard even though I kept my expression plain.
At this point, I expected him to break down in tears anytime soon.

“My relationship with Phoebe…” He paused as if he was contemplating if he should share whatever his groundbreaking discovery was.
Could he hurry up? I had other things to attend to apart from being an emotional support to a grown man.
Fortunately, he finally continued after taking a deep breath. “… My relationship with Phoebe goes beyond the mate bond. I thought I couldn’t develop feelings outside the bond at first but I was wrong. Goddess, I was so wrong, Negan.”
Hold up… He knew I was the one who slept with his mate, right?
Why was he telling me all this?
Something wasn’t adding up. I would’ve thought the Alpha was drunk and now had a loose tongue, but that wasn’t it.
I couldn’t pick up the smell of any liquor from his breath.
I dimmed my eyes, deciding to monitor his actions further.
“After Phoebe’s accident, when I rushed her back into the mansion, the doctor kept insisting that her wolf was badly affected and couldn’t heal her properly.” He continued with his yap session, stepping away from me and pacing around his office.
I remained rooted to the spot, wondering more and more where he was going with this.
“The mate bond, Negan.” He blurted yet again, sounding excited. “Somehow, my proximity to Phoebe helped her wolf heal faster. Do you know how it’s said that the mate bond between an Alpha and his mate is unbreakable? This goes beyond anything I’ve ever heard about.”
And… Now, he sounded like a madman.
I couldn’t help myself anymore and asked. “Pardon me, Alpha, but why are you telling me all this? I thought by now you’ve made it clear that I can’t be trusted?”
When those words left my mouth, Kaene stopped moving around, the silence in the office becoming increasingly deafening.
I braced myself, expecting him to do something rash and unexpected.
But instead, he placed his hand on my shoulder from behind and forced me to turn my gaze to him.
Kaene had a wry smile on his face as he tightened his grip on my shoulder. “Because you’re my best friend, Negan. And Phoebe is my mate and Luna, despite what anyone says. You two are the closest people in my life right now.” He stated.
Oh… Oh wow.
Bless the fool’s heart.
His words touched me so much that I almost felt bad for knowing that he was about to be assassinated and didn’t say anything.
Almost…
If, indeed, this was a sign that Kaene was changing for the better, it was going to make things a little more interesting.
“I want to confess my feelings to Phoebe.” He suddenly blurted, backing away from me. “My true feelings.”
Ugh, someone save me from this lovey-dovey bullshit. I think I’m going to be sick.
