Chapter 123: _Strength Of The Mate Bond
“You aren’t leaving here in one piece!” The Delta roared from the other end of the hall as I ran toward the exit.
I knew he’d try shooting me again and jumped forward, falling on the ground.
As expected, a loud bang sounded around the hall, followed by a frustrated grunt from the Delta.
“Stay still, you reject!” He groaned, but it seemed he was out of bullets as the only sound I could hear was him trying to cork his gun.
I panted heavily, struggling to catch my breath as I got up and successfully ran out of the hall.
The sound of my shoes on the tarred ground as I ran echoed in the night and my gown got in the way of my running.
Dread washed over my body as I glanced back, half expecting the Delta to run out of the hall as well.
“I need to get to Kaene faster.” I blurted with gritted teeth, my bones slowly shifting as my wolf gave me a little physical boost.
My running speed increased until I finally got to the empty compound.
I couldn’t spot a single guard here.
“Oh no…” I muttered, my gaze going to Kaene’s dark suite window.
It didn’t take long for me to get into the mansion, my breathing hitched as I hurriedly made my way to the stairs.
However, before I could start climbing the stairs, a stern voice spoke from behind me. “And where are you coming back from running like a headless chicken?”
Gosh, not HER!
I swerved my body only to see former Luna Catherine standing at the start of the stairs with her eyes dimmed suspiciously.
If there’s anyone she should be suspicious of, it’s that bitch, Elsa Thatcher!
“Kaene is in danger, ma’am. I have to rush to him before–” I wasn’t able to finish my sentence when Kaene’s mother gasped in shock.
“Danger? How dare you say such a thing about my son?” She snapped, an ugly scowl appearing on her face. “Kaene will live on and come out of this dilemma stronger than ever, no thanks to you.”
Argh, could she quit with the theatrics?
Every ounce of patience that I’ve ever built for this woman evaporated in an instant as I glared at her. “I don’t have time for this! I know you hate me, but Kaene and this entire household are toast if things don’t go well.”
Former Luna Catherine’s eyes widened in surprise.
I guess she never expected me to have such a reaction with her.
I sighed, not wasting my time further with her, and continued running up the stairs.
I finally got to the door of Kaene’s suite and burst it open. My eyes scanned the dark room until I finally spotted him.
Kaene…
“Oh no…” I whispered, shaking my head slowly in disbelief as I rushed to him. “No, no, no. Please, no!”
Lying on the ground was Kaene surrounded by what seemed to be a pool of his own blood.
He didn’t move, his eyes closed even when I got to his side and knelt, my eyes stinging with hot tears that threatened to pour out.
I used my hands to caress Kaene’s chest, where I saw a dagger with a silver blade sticking to it.
“What do I do? What should I do?!” I mumbled incoherently, my hands brushing through my hair in frustration.

Cold sweat dripped down my back as I began to fear the worst.
Is… Is Kaene dead? Did I arrive here too late?
My eyes scanned the room as my nose picked up the scent of blood.
It wasn’t Kaene’s blood though… It was the blood of another werewolf.
Whoever did this obviously had a huge struggle with Kaene.
“Elsa…” I muttered coldly with gritted teeth.
I’ll deal with her later… Now I need to see if there’s any hope for Kaene.
Suddenly, I heard footsteps rushing toward the room, followed by a gasp.
“Goddess, have mercy! Kaene!” Catherine rushed into the suite, her voice shaky with terror.
When she got to Kaene, she just stood there in horror, her sobs being the only sound I could hear in the suite.
Well, that and a slow but steady heartbeat.
“He’s still alive.” I breathed out in relief, using my fingers to caress his cheeks. “Hang in there, Kaene.”
Meanwhile, Catherine didn’t waste time making the situation even more dramatic. “Who’s responsible for this? Were you able to come in here and try killing my son so quickly? Is… Is that why–”
“Mrs. Maverick, please!” I yelled out in frustration, calling her by her family’s last name for the first time.
It seemed to successfully shut her up, causing me to sigh as I went into action.
I grabbed the dagger and slowly drew it out of his chest, but almost had a panic attack when blood trickled out of the open wound.
“Goddess, have mercy.” I blurted, hastily flinging the dagger aside and grabbing the lower part of my gown.
My claws popped out, allowing me to easily rip out a large part of the dress and place it on the wound, applying pressure while also trying to catch my breath before I succumbed to all the pressure I was feeling.
“Don’t you have an elixir or something we can use to help him?” I turned my gaze to Catherine who just stood there, frozen in fear as she watched her son struggling for his life.
Tears trailed down her eyes, but she didn’t make any sounds.
That’s until I snapped my fingers and yelled out. “Catherine, please, focus! If you have something that can help Kaene, now is the time to bring it out.”
My eyes were also heavy with tears but I still had hope.
The mate bond, which was like a thread connecting me to Kaene, was still active. It was faint now… But it was still there.
Anyway, Catherine jolted back into reality and nodded her head. “I’ll… I’ll go see if I have something in my room.”
With that, she rushed out of the suite, leaving me alone with Kaene.
“Kaene, I’m sorry…” I whispered into his ears, sniffling as I tried holding back my tears to no avail. “I… I betrayed your trust. I was rejected and felt alone and ended up seeking solace with Negan because he was so refreshingly different.”
I stared at his face, using my fingers to trace lines on it. “But… But we’ve grown closer since I was revealed as the Moon’s Chosen. And now I realize that the mate bond is beyond the rejection, the betrayal, and the sex. It’s much more than any of that.”
I drew in a deep breath, bringing my mouth to his ears. “Please, wake up. I’m willing for us to start over and–”
Before I could finish my statement, Kaene’s eyes shut open.
