Chapter 160: _Be Careful What You Wish For
A week passed and it was finally time for the Winter Wedding.
However, with it came the planning of the Alpha Council and Kaene on how they were going to catch this killer… Who was standing in the room with them.
“Gamma Thane. What’s the status on security?” Kaene asked as he adjusted his tie in front of a large mirror in his suite.
I stood behind him, staring at him while trying hard to hold myself back from cackling like a madman.
This was the biggest joke of the decade!
If only these morons knew that their plans would be useless at the end of the day.
“Security is tight, sir.” Gamma Thane responded, getting up from where he sat. “I had the pack soldiers positioned at different strategic points around the estate. From the entrance to the estate to the cursed garden, and also all around the event hall. They’re all on the lookout for anything or anyone suspicious.”
Kaene nodded his head and then breathed heavily. “Excellent. And then, the food and drinks too. Make sure the pack soldiers watch the butlers and servants in charge of entertaining the guests. We don’t want a repetition of the Luna Ball incident.”
The Gamma nodded his understanding, bowing slightly. “I’ll inform the soldiers, sir.”
Meanwhile, the Lycan was in a jolly mood, his face brightened with a warm smile. “Sir, I suggest we make a toast to you. To celebrate you on this special occasion.” He remarked.
Oh, brother…
I rolled my eyes discreetly, glancing at the Lycan.
I wouldn’t be surprised if I discovered the idiot was mated to a barrel of beer.
His love for liquor even outmatched me, and that was saying something…
“Lycan Davos, there’s nothing to celebrate.” Kaene tried to brush it off with a stoic expression. “That killer is still out there, and this might be our only chance to catch him before he does any more damage. Be serious.”
Oh, la, la.
I was doing an excellent job! Kaene was so stressed out even though today was supposed to be his wedding.
He would finally get to be legally bound to his mate the human way, but yet he couldn’t focus because of the looming threat.
However, I decided to stick to my supportive best friend routine and placed my hand on his shoulder, my lips curling into a smile in the mirror.
“Come on, Alpha Kaene. We have everything under control.” I tried to sound reassuring. “Just, drop the overbearing Alpha duties today and let your Council handle this.”
He paused, dropping his hands from his tie.
Did I strike a nerve? Who knows?
But right now as I held his shoulder, I took advantage, using my magic to read his emotions.
He did a good job hiding it, but he was overflowing with anxiety. It wasn’t soul-gripping fear yet… But it was getting there.
I just needed to push a few more buttons.
“I guess you’re right, Negan.” Kaene blurted with a sigh, swerving his body to face me. “Let’s head to the event hall. We have to be there before Phoebe.”
I nodded, plastering a smile on my face as he turned to the door.
However, before he could leave, a knock came on the door.
“Who is it? Come in!” Kaene yelled out.
However, when the door swung open, everyone in the suite paused what they were doing when they saw who it was.

Well, well, well…
“Mother,” Kaene muttered, staring at her with a complicated expression.
Catherine stood there in front of the entrance with a wry smile on her face as she stepped forward with hesitation.
“Kaene, I–” she was about to speak but the Alpha wasn’t having it.
“It’s ‘Alpha Kaene’, mother. What is it?” He asked sternly.
An awkward silence fell on the suite just then as the Gamma and Lycan glanced at each other.
I glanced at them as well, signaling at the door. “Let’s excuse the Alpha,” I stated plainly.
They both nodded and took the lead, heading for the door.
However, before I could follow behind them, Catherine held me back with a pleading expression on her face.
“Please, Beta Negan. I need you to listen to what I have to say as well.” She sounded sincere.
The brief physical contact allowed me to pick up hints of desperation.
Oh, the poor thing…
Sighing to myself, I nodded and took a few steps back, standing beside Kaene who had his arms folded.
“Mother, what’s the meaning of this? It’s getting late, we have to be there before Phoebe and–” Kaene ranted, his tone increasing progressively until his mother interrupted.
“I know, I know.” She nodded, rubbing her palms together. “It’ll only take a minute.”
I glanced at Kaene, who glanced at me as well. I decided to play along by nodding my head, urging him silently to listen to his mother.
It was quite funny how the tables could turn so quickly.
“Speak,” Kaene said to his mother bluntly, placing his hand on a chair nearby and leaning against it.
Catherine nodded with a slight smile on her face before she continued. “I know I can’t change time or what I did. But if I could, I would.”
She paused, fixing her gaze on me briefly.
I squinted my eyes, curious to see where she was going with this.
“I’ll confess everything today to the pack members.” She revealed, lowering her gaze. “They need to know the evil I committed. Maybe my story will be a lesson to other nobles who might harbor the same darkness in them.”
Hmph… Darkness?
The disease that plagued werewolves was beyond ‘darkness’.
They were content with killing each other and making those below them suffer all because of pesky issues like class, pack politics, or territorial disputes.
All in the name of their stupid goddess.
It was aggravating and all I wanted was to watch it burn to the ground.
Anyway, Catherine continued after a short pause.
“I hope you can forgive me for being so hard on your mate and planting seeds of discord even when you were warming up to her. And as for you, Negan…” Her voice nearly broke when she fixed her gaze on me. “Please, forgive me for bringing you into this mess in the first place and taking advantage of your kind heart.”
I stared at her blankly, not knowing what to say. Actually, I did have a lot of things to say… It’s just that none of them would be found appropriate by these dogs.
There was a long silence in the suite, Kaene staring at his mother with hesitation in his eyes.
Eventually, he sighed heavily. “Very well, then. You can go help Phoebe prepare if she allows it and then make your confession at the wedding. Let’s just get this over with.”
Without another word, he waltzed past her and I quickly scurried behind him.
Be careful what you wish for, Alpha Kaene…
