Chapter 167: _A Device From A Witch

The chaos that erupted in the event hall after Catherine was suddenly hit by an arrow left me frozen on the spot.
I didn’t know what to think. I didn’t know how to feel, especially after I saw Kaene running up to his mother and checking on her.
There wasn’t any confirmation yet but I had a feeling she wouldn’t survive it. There was a deep sense of dread that surged through my body numbing me and putting my mind to a halt.
It was happening again.
Once again, a terrible event with me at the center. It felt like a practical joke at this point.
I was left so terrified that I wasn’t able to notice the bomb that rolled onto the stage and exploded amid the attack… Until Negan pushed me away from the blast and shielded me.
“T– Thank you, Negan.” I stuttered, slowly coming back to reality as Negan got off me.
It was then that it hit me like a flood.
My family.
They were supposed to be sitting in front of the makeshift stage but I couldn’t see them through all the smoke or hear them through the terrified screams of wolves.
I wanted to go out there and search for them, but Negan held me back. It truly was too risky to go out there.
After finding Kaene and watching him sprint out of the Hall in his wolf form, which I didn’t even have a chance to get a better look at, Negan and I were about to rush out in search of my family when a feminine voice called behind us.
“Wait!”
Negan and I swerved back just in time to see Elder Gita walking toward us, her flowy white dress stained with debris as she clung to her staff.
“There’s still at least one Hunter in this hall.” She remarked, her gaze fixed on a spot upstairs.
I glanced at Negan before following her gaze. Soon enough, I spotted a man wearing black attire and a black cap.
He held an arrow gun, pointing it at the people in the hall.
My heart dropped just then.
“He’s probably the bastard who shot down Catherine,” Negan muttered, a cold glint in his eyes. “Don’t worry. I have him.”
Wait… What?
Before I could say anything, Negan sprinted forward, stepping on a chair amidst the small crowd of people still trying to run out of the hall.
He leaped into the air, landing on the gallery where the Hunter stood.
I watched as Negan punched the Hunter before he could do anything, knocking him to the ground before he grabbed his throat and leaped back to the ground floor where Elder Gita and I were waiting for him.
“As impressive as always, Beta.” Elder Gita remarked before stretching out her hand and grabbing the Hunter by his collar.
The human now had a bloody nose and seemed like he was a few feet away from death’s door.
“How did you find us?” Elder Gita asked, staring coldly at the man.
It was unlike the usual warm, motherly vibe she always carried.
The Hunter was weak but managed to move his hands, placing his right hand on top of Elder Gita’s.

I furrowed my eyebrows. It has been so long since I ever interacted with a human up close.
Our pack has always kept our distance, especially after the past Hunter attacks.
“What? You monsters thought you could hide forever?” The Hunter asked with a snigger, spitting blood on Elder Gita’s gown right after.
I hadn’t seen her in action but even I knew that was a bad move that he was soon going to regret.
Without warning, Elder Gita brought her right hand to his neck, tightening her grip around it until the man’s face was redder than a tomato.
She dimmed her eyes, bringing her mouth closer to his ears. “I compel you by the power of the moon goddess. Speak. How did you find us?”
Her words were a whisper but seemed to hold some mystical power that caused the man’s eyes to become blank.
His lips parted and his mind seemed to be in conflict as he struggled to find his words.
Eventually, he spoke up. “Witches.”
What the heck?
I glanced at Negan who seemed just as puzzled as I was, his eyes dimmed in confusion.
Elder Gita didn’t seem to be done with him, shaking him violently before speaking with a louder voice now. “How did the witches help you? What deal did you make with them?”
Whatever spell Elder Gita had placed on the man didn’t seem to be powerful enough to outright control him to speak.
That was until Negan rolled his eyes and stepped forward, grabbing the Hunter off her hands and dragging him across the ground.
“Negan?” I called out, squinting my eyes and wondering what he was doing.
But he didn’t respond, walking with the Hunter to the nearest wall before slamming him against it.
I watched as he brought his mouth toward the Hunter, whispering something into his ears.
After a few seconds, the Hunter screamed out, shaking violently and seeming like he wanted to flee away from Negan’s hold.
“The witch built a device! He built a device for us that deciphered your location!” The Hunter yelled, his voice echoing around the hall as he kicked and struggled to get out of Negan’s grip.
Negan ignored all this, making sure his next question was loud enough for Elder Gita to hear. “Where is this witch? Where is the device?”
But the Hunter shook his head slowly, tears streaming down his eyes. “P– Please, I– I don’t know. Only the higher-ups among the Hunters know–”
“Then you’re no longer useful,” Negan stated causally.
Without another word, he exerted more pressure, snapping the Hunter’s neck to an unnatural angle before dropping his body to the ground.
I opened my mouth, staring speechlessly at the scene before me.
This was the first time I would witness Negan kill someone.
The fact that he was able to turn his gaze back to Elder Gita and me with a slight smile on his face sent shivers down my spine.
“Well, you ladies heard all that. Now what do we do?”
