Chapter 212: _Something Worse, Something Unknown.
A knock was echoed through the room, disturbing the little moment of peace that I had.
I didn’t move my head from Kaene’s shoulder, hoping that whoever it was would just go away and let us be. But the knock came again, louder this time, almost impatient.
A maid or a guard wouldn’t knock like that and Kaene knew that too as he sighed wearily, releasing my hand from his grip before he stood up to open the door.
I sat up, rubbing my temples as I felt a headache. I ignored it as I watched Kaene open the door.
The door opened, revealing an elegant woman who carried herself with grace and poise. Her presence alone was enough to command attention.
Kaene’s mom.
She entered with the room like the Alpha’s mother she was, her eyes scanned the room before settling on me.
I found myself sitting with my back straight under her imposing aura. There was something different about her today that I couldn’t quite place my hands on.
Her red lips curved Into a warm smile as she saw me, ” Good morning lovebirds, I hope I’m not disturbing.” Her voice teasing.
“Oh, N-no.” I stammered, my face turning a shade of red as I understood what she was hinting at. The woman sure wanted babies.
“Mom, what is this about?” Kaene asked, his voice sounded as tired as he looked. We were both exhausted and honestly didn’t need more drama after we had just heard from Elder Gita.
She turned to Kaene who was still by the door, flipping her hair backwards. “I have come to see the Alpha and Luna of the Blue moon pack.” Her voice sober and quiet.
That was an official tone, she wanted to request for something. It was easy to tell from her tone and choice of words.
I exchanged glances with Kaene, almost like we thought the same thing before he nodded for her to continue.
She took a seat, smoothing the fabric of her gown before clasping her hands together, placing them in her lap. “I’ve come to discuss preparations for the new Beta.”
Silence filled the room as if she hadn’t just spoken.
A new Beta?
Right! Ever since we came back, we mourned Negan and his betrayal but we hadn’t bothered ask who was the current Beta or anything like that.
Although, Negan was still a sensitive topic for me to discuss, but I realized sometimes it’s better to move on. If he had succeeded with his plans, I was sure he wouldn’t bat an eye or feel bad for us.
Kaene sighed, his shoulders slouched as he spoke, “Mom, I really don’t think now is…”
“You are moving too slow. I think that the pack has gone long enough without a Beta. An order must be maintained.” She interrupted, her tone calm but authoritative.
It made sense, of course. The Beta was second in command to Alpha, responsible for strategy, discipline, and ensuring the pack’s stability with the Alpha.
But who could the old Beta be? My mind raced in fear, what if it was Negan?
I trembled slightly from the thought.
“Who was the old Beta?” My voice low as I asked cautiously.
Kaene gave a slight nod in the distance, probably agreeing to the question I asked.
His mom turned her piercing gaze to me, her brows creased together in confusion. She narrowed her eyes scrutinizing me before giving a reply.
“Beta Lockwood, of course.” She sounded irritated.
My breath hitched as she mentioned the name. Lockwood? As in Negan Lockwood?

I felt a chill run down my spine and I was covered in sweats.
It was Negan, he was the Beta!
I forced my face to remain neutral, trying hard not to let my internal turmoil express itself on my face.
“He was a competent man, but old. He served your father well and he served you better, but sadly he had no son, no direct successor. Which is why choosing a replacement now is important.”
I gasped in shock, Negan was completely erased from existence. The old Beta was his father.
My face turned pale from the realization.
“Are you okay, dear?” Kaene’s mom asked me, her voiced laced with concern.
I nodded weakly, finding it hard to speak.
I glanced at Kaene, seeing the way his jaw clenched. “I’ll think about it.” He said, quickly interrupting his mom from asking further questions.
She frowned, her eyes darting between Kaene and I for a long moment, trying to sense the underlying tension then she gave a nod.
She rose to her feet. “Don’t take too long. A pack without a strong Beta is a vulnerable one.”
With that, she turned and walked out of the room. As she left, I let out a breath I hadn’t realized I was holding.
Kaene sat down beside me, rubbing his palm over his face. Before I could voice my thoughts, another knock sounded at the door.
Kaene sighed heavily. “What now?” he said in annoyance.
This time, when he opened the door, it was Lycan Davos. His face was grim and his expression bitter.
“Alpha, Luna.” He greeted with a slight bow. “There’s something you need to see. Immediately.” He said with a sense of urgency.
“What is it?” Kaene asked lazily.
Lycan Davos gazed at me before returning to Kaene. “It’s better if you see for yourself.”
He hesitated for a moment before stepping aside, revealing a guard behind him, panting heavily as if he had run here. His face was pale, his eyes wide like he has seen something terrifying.
Kaene turned to me, he wore a disturbed look, “You don’t have to come.” He almost sounded like he was pleading, but I didn’t care.
I glared at him, like hell I was staying behind. I need to be there.
“I’m coming.” I said firmly, standing before he could argue.
Whatever this was, I had to see for myself.
My heart race in fear as we ran through the hallway, my mind spinning with possibilities. Was it the hunters again? Was it the unknown we knew nothing about?
We finally stepped outside, arriving at the training grounds where a crowd had gathered. The warriors murmured amongst themselves in whispers and hushed tones. They stood in a circle around something.
Kaene pushed forward through the crowd, and I followed closely behind him. The warriors parted, revealing what they circled around.
The sight before me sent a shiver down my spine as I covered my mouth with my hand, blinking rapidly to make sure I saw right.
On the cold floor lay a body.
The body was unrecognizable, it looked like his skin was peeled off his body, revealing just flesh. He laid there like a bag of flesh and blood filled with deep, rough claw marks
I looked away, unable to take in the sight anymore. My stomach twisted in fear, it was horrifying.
“This wasn’t done by a hunter.” Lycan Davos reported.
No. It wasn’t. This was something else. Something worse, something unknown.
Just what were we dealing with?
