Rise of the Rejected Luna - Chapter 46
Chapter 46: _Odd Behavior
Eventually, Miranda led me to a door at the end of the hallway… Which was wide open and gave a view of the brightly lit office inside.
Pacing around was Negan who turned his gaze to me, a smile appearing on his face.
“Good morning, Luna.” He bowed slightly, taking me by surprise at first.
But I was able to regain my composure quickly and bowed as well. “Good morning, Beta.”
Just then, Miranda coughed and took her leave hastily, closing the door behind her and leaving me with Negan.
“So much for not using titles.” I scoffed as I made my way to what I assumed was my seat.
It was black and looked quite comfortable, but was also quite high.
Anyway, after we were both seated and separated by the table in front of us, Beta Negan chuckled. “Oh, you would’ve liked me to call you ‘honey’ in front of your maid?” He teased me.
My face flushed as I hurriedly shook my head. “Of course, not! But… But I wouldn’t have minded you calling me by my name, anyway.”
Argh, what was I talking about?
“You know, forget about all that.” I waved my hand dismissively, shaking my head. “Why did you want to see me?”
Negan crossed one leg on top of the other, making himself feel comfortable as he muttered. “Well, it’s actually about Kaene. He sent me to guide you in your duties as Luna since he’s too busy trying to close business deals and build relationships with the packs from last night.”
Oh…
Kaene had said this same thing before he left but I hadn’t expected him to carry it out so soon.
Fiddling with my fingers, I shrugged. “Well, where do we start from then?”
However, Negan arched his eyes, seeming confused. “So, you don’t find it suspicious how Kaene set the both of us for this despite showing obvious signs of jealousy?”
I parted my lips but ended up not being able to come up with anything.
Now that I thought about it, it did seem suspicious. Was he trying to test us?
Well… It was a little too late for that anyway.
“Listen, Negan. We can’t continue stressing over what happened.” I sighed, standing up. “What has happened… Has happened. If I had a time machine to go back in time and stop myself from doing that, I would.”
Just then, Negan gasped dramatically, placing his hand on his chest. “Should I feel offended?”
What the heck?
My face flushed with a blush as I looked away from him. “Gosh, you’re unbelievable!”
We both chuckled, the office walls echoing the sound of our laughter to us.
It was so soothing how I could still feel comfortable around him despite what we did and the guilt I carried because of it.
Eventually, after laughing to our satisfaction, I coughed awkwardly. “Anyway, concerning the assignment the grumpy Alpha gave you… Shall we go outside to discuss more? Maybe, to the gardens?”
Negan tilted his head, seemingly in thought but he shrugged. “As you wish, Your Highness. After you.” He gestured toward the door.
I rolled my eyes, walking past him and opening the door myself.
When we both stepped outside, I met Miranda waiting for me, leaning against the wall.
My brows knitted into a frown as I tapped her on the shoulder. “Hey, don’t you have any work you should be attending to? Why are you waiting out here?”

She jolted, turning her gaze to me and scratching the back of her neck awkwardly. “Uh, not really ma’am. Ever since the Alpha made me your maid, I no longer have to do casual maid jobs. I can just stick around with you.”
Okay… But why was she so jumpy?
Squinting my eyes, I shrugged but muttered. “Well, the Beta and I want to have a little walk around the estate. Alone.”
I took note of Miranda’s expression, noticing how she gulped with worry in her eyes.
Yup… She was acting way too suspicious.
What had Kaene told her to get her all riled up?
Just then, Negan held my shoulder, nodding his head with a smile. “Just let the girl do her job. It’s not bad having your own little assistant.”
I hesitated, turning my gaze to Miranda with my eyes arched.
But eventually, I sighed, taking the lead toward the stairs that led downstairs. “Very well, come along, Miranda.”
I heard her scurrying behind me as Negan took his place beside me.
When we got to the ground floor, I met Kaene’s mother at the dinner table eating breakfast.
Oh, that’s right… I didn’t have breakfast today.
“Good morning, ma’am.” I greeted her with a little hesitation, half expecting her to hurl insults at me.
However, to my surprise, she didn’t even bother raising her head from her food, instead answering me with an eerily calm tone. “Good morning.”
That was… Off.
Why did I have a bad feeling about this?
Glancing at Negan who seemed unbothered, I continued walking, heading out of the mansion and into the morning sun.
“Does former Luna Catherine’s behavior seem… Odd to you?” I muttered to the Beta, arching an eyebrow as I turned my gaze to him. “I mean, usually she never fails to insult me with every chance she gets. But recently she’s seemed pretty… Tame. Especially after the Luna Ball last night.”
Maybe I was being paranoid, but my mind told me Kaene’s mother had something wicked in mind. And I’d be damned before I waited around to find out.
Gosh, I hate surprises!
If she had any nefarious plans, she better just carry them out already instead of keeping me on my toes.
Wait, speaking of surprises, Kaene did promise he had a surprise waiting for me tonight.
I wondered what that could be.
Anyway, Negan responded with a light chuckle. “Don’t bother yourself about Catherine, Phoebe. She needs time to get used to you, just like her son.”
Hmph, if that was the case then how long did I have to wait?
How long do I have to constantly have to fear for my life because of my mate’s mother and her subtle threats?
