Chapter 50: _Protecting The Alpha… Or Not
As soon as Phoebe whispered those words out loud, however, I placed my hand over her mouth again.
Shit, could she keep quiet?!
Delta Asher was also a werewolf like us and would pick up her stupid noises if she didn’t shut the hell up.
Getting discovered by the stupid Delta would ruin the whole plan.
Luckily, the Delta spoke again. “Yes, yes, sorry sir. I thought I heard something.”
Phew!
“I’m currently in the estate, sir. I plan on seeing your daughter.” The shameless Delta revealed.
I already knew who the Delta was talking to and was able to put one and two together when he mentioned meeting the other person’s daughter.
Huh… So that girl was proving to be a useful pawn after all.
“Alright, we’ll talk later, sir.” The Delta stated. “Don’t worry. I’m destroying the device I used in making this call as soon as I hang up. No one will be able to discover our little secret.”
And with that, Negan picked up the sound of a silent beep followed by the Delta sighing to himself.
“Count your days, Kaene.” He sniggered with a low tone.
The sound of leaves rustling again signaled his departure.
When I sensed that he was no longer in the vicinity, I stepped out of the bush, helping Phoebe out of it.
“Thank you.” She said absentmindedly, breathing heavily as if we’d been doing a particularly naughty physical activity down there.
But she soon spoke with disbelief in her voice. “Did we hear that right? Delta Asher plans to kill my…”
She paused, seeming hesitant to refer to Kaene as her husband now that she had more understanding of how werewolf culture worked.
How adorable.
“Kaene is in danger if we don’t stop that bastard.” She ended up remarking, her eyes brimming with determination.
However, I felt the urge to play with her feelings a little and did just that.
“I thought you hated him? Weren’t you planning on escaping at one point?” I drawled, faking a yawn.
As expected, her eyes widened as she hurriedly scolded me. “How can you say such a thing? Yes, I… I’m not exactly fond of Kaene because he’s a jerk, but he’s not a jerk who deserves to be murdered in cold blood. Besides, isn’t he your best friend?”
She arched an eyebrow, looking at me with a growing suspicion in her eyes.
Oops… Looks like I pushed her buttons a little too much.
Placing a hand on her shoulder, I gave her a reassuring smile. “You know I was just joking. And you’re right, we have to help Kaene out of this.”
A relieved smile curled her lips as she drew in a deep breath. “Okay, then. We’ll just have to wait for him to come home and expose Asher. I bet he–”
My brows snapped into a frown as I placed a finger on her lips, shaking my head in disapproval.
“No. We can’t let Kaene know about this yet. Not without substantial evidence.” I explained.
As much as I’ve lied and manipulated her from the beginning, I was telling the truth for once.
Even if I had any interest in saving Kaene’s pitiful life, I couldn’t meet him and tell him about Asher’s impending betrayal without evidence.

But Phoebe didn’t see things from my perspective and brushed away my hand on her shoulder. “What do you mean, ‘evidence’? You two are best friends for the moon’s sake! Even if he doesn’t trust me enough, I’m sure he’ll trust your words.”
Oh, how wrong she was.
“Yes, Kaene trusts me.” I nodded in agreement, secretly proud of that fact.
But then I added. “But not when Asher is backed by arguably the most influential man in the pack. Accusing him of such a crime would mean accusing the Delta’s backer of the same crime.”
Phoebe’s eyes quivered with confusion.
It seems I needed to shed more light on the issue.
“Sir Thatcher is Delta Asher’s backer,” I revealed somberly. “He’s his godfather. It’s well known among the circle of the Alpha council that the Delta only managed to land that position because of Sir Thatcher’s influence.”
Phoebe’s mouth formed an ‘O’ as she began understanding the gravity of the situation.
With his influence, Sir Thatcher could change the narrative and find a way to blackmail Phoebe and me.
Something like that wasn’t above a man with so much wealth and power.
“So, what do we do now?” Phoebe suddenly muttered, her tone laced with uncertainty. “I can’t just sit idly and watch Kaene have his life in danger.”
I honestly didn’t have a plan in mind.
Well, that’s because I didn’t care anyway, but still. I needed to give the girl some reassurance.
“We’ll just have to watch the Delta from a distance. Taking note of his movements and plans.” I revealed calmly. “I’m sure Sir Thatcher is also in on this plot. That’s probably the person the Delta was on call with.”
Phoebe nodded, sighing defeatedly.
Just as I was about to suggest we move along to another part of the estate to continue our discussions, I spotted Miranda walking toward us with a stray.
She plastered a smile on her face, approaching us while avoiding my piercing gaze.
“Here are your snacks, ma’am.” She bowed slightly, showing Phoebe the tray.
But the latter was far too disturbed to bother herself with that, waving dismissively. “Maybe I’ll eat it back in the mansion. I need to rest a little.”
She glanced at me, giving me an apologetic look. “I hope you understand, Beta Negan? We can continue this some other time.”
I nodded, giving her a reassuring smile.
Ugh, I’ve done a lot of those today to the extent that I felt like my face was about to break.
Anyway, Phoebe proceeded to walk past Miranda, heading out of the garden while the poor maid stood there speechlessly.
“Sir, did something happen to the Luna to upset her?” Surprisingly, the maid managed to muster courage and asked me.
I stared at her for a few seconds before grabbing the iced tea I’d sent her to get in the first place.
Manipulating an entire pack was a lot of work anyway.
Taking a sip from the drink as Miranda walked away after an awkward silence, I sighed with a satisfied smile.
“Delicious…”
