Rise of the Rejected Luna - Chapter 61
Chapter 61: _Hexed Life
Eager to calm Catherine’s anger, I stepped forward, making my way to her.
“M– Ma’am, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean–”
However, she raised her hand, a smile plastered on her face. “Don’t. It’s fine, it’s not your fault.”
What the heck?
A cold shiver ran down my spine as she stepped forward, her eyes on the scattered pieces of the necklace in my hands.
I stretched my hands forward, gazing at my feet like that would save me from what I felt was impending doom.
But it never came.
“In all seriousness, I don’t blame you, Phoebe.” She repeated after taking the pieces from my hands. But when I raised my head, I didn’t see an ounce of kindness in her eyes.
On the contrary, her gaze on me was cold as she spoke with an equally cold tone. “I blame myself for not getting rid of you on the same night you got here with everything I have…” She stepped forward with each word she uttered.
Terrified, I moved backward, trying to avoid an encounter with her.
But Kaene’s mother persisted with her hurtful words. “I blame myself for not pulling everything in my power to ensure you and Kaene’s ‘union’ never happens. And THIS…” She raised the pieces of the necklace to my view.
Not once during her rant did I utter a word in retaliation. I wouldn’t dare.
In her current mood, it was obvious the former Luna wanted nothing more than to have me dead.
Anyway, she continued with her rant. “… THIS is merely one of the consequences of my refusal to use what I have to get rid of you. And I’ll be damned before you give me another reason for regretting not doing what needs to be done.”
Why was she speaking so cryptically? Was she going to do something to harm me?
Was my life in danger from not just one but two sources?
Suddenly, Catherine threw the pieces of the necklace on my body, glaring at me one last time before storming out of the living room, her steps echoing.
When I was certain she was far enough, I cursed out loud. “Shit!” My hands brushed through my hair with frustration as I paced around the living room. “Can this night get–”
I paused, sealing my mouth before I completed that sentence.
It seemed each time I uttered that sentence a new hex was added to my life.
Sighing, I was about to head to the dining room when thunder boomed outside.
Seems there was a storm coming in.
“Phoebe?!” A familiar voice bellowed from the living room entrance, forcing me to turn my gaze there.
It was none other than Kaene whose brows were furrowed into a frown as he made his way toward me.
However, he paused in front of me when his gaze landed on the scattered pieces of the necklace that lay on the ground around me.
“By the moon…” He muttered, his steps slowing down now as he squatted, picking up a piece with disbelief in his eyes.”What the hell happened?”
I drew in a deep breath and was about to explain when the living room door swung open yet again and Elsa Thatcher came closer with her bitchy face.
“Like I told you, Kaene, your darling wife over here did the most blasphemous thing by destroying the necklace simply because I was checking it out.” She hissed, pointing at me with accusing fingers. “And on top of that, she slapped me. My face still hurts, Kaene.”
She grumbled, holding onto her face while giving me a mischievous smirk.
Meanwhile, it seemed Kaene was believing her words already as he began querying me. “Phoebe, how could you? Do you know how expensive and old this is? It was first worn by my grandmother as a gift from my grandfather.”

Gosh, he didn’t have to tell me all that and make me feel even more guilty.
“Millions, Phoebe.” Elsa chimed in just then. “This piece is worth tens of millions in case you weren’t aware. It’s been the prized symbol of the Luna of this pack for decades. Now, if this isn’t a sign that you’re unfit to be Luna, I don’t know what is.”
My fists clenched as I glared at her.
Between Kaene not taking my side, as usual, and this bitch running her mouth like she had an oral essay to submit tomorrow, I didn’t know which irked me the most.
However, when Kaene spoke again, I realized that nothing was more infuriating than your own mate not trying to defend you.
“Fixing this will take a lot of money.” He blurted, drawing in a deep breath. “I think giving you was a mistake. You obviously don’t know the value of these things.”
I couldn’t take it anymore.
The veins on my neck strained just then as I snapped. “Enough, Kaene! What the heck is your problem?!”
The thunder outside rumbled with more intensity just then as I glared at Kaene who gawked at me with surprise.
“You didn’t even bother hearing my side of the story but instead…” I paused, pointing at Elsa. “You chose to take in every garbage this bitch vomits from her mouth.”
Elsa scrunched up her face but she didn’t dare make a move on me.
As for Kaene, his expression darkened. “Have you lost your mind, Phoebe?”
However, his words didn’t phase me one bit as I responded. “Oh, please, spare me the ‘all-powerful Alpha’ bullcrap! You’ve used it to keep me in line with your crazy ideologies since I got here, but screw it!”
Lightning flashed just then, illuminating Kaene’s face with its blue light.
The grim expression on his face was made more evident by it as he moved toward me.
I stepped back, trying to escape but it was too late.
He grabbed my right wrist, yanking me around violently before finally pulling me close to his chest.
“Argh, you’re hurting me!” I protested, hitting his chest with my free left hand repeatedly.
But he didn’t move, glaring down at me menacingly… Until I landed a crisp slap on his face.
