Rise of the Rejected Luna - Chapter 69
Chapter 69: _Important Pieces
That same night, I arrived at the Alpha’s mansion with Rowland accompanying me, just in time to see all the elites in attendance.
The most powerful and influential members of the pack all gathered in the same spot for a cause none of them even cared about.
Yup, it’s just another day in the Blue Moon pack.
The mansion’s exterior was decorated with colorful lights that made it all the more inviting… And deceitful to anyone who didn’t know what goes on behind those walls.
I spotted former Luna Catherine standing at the entrance to the mansion with a bright smile on her face, welcoming guests with handshakes and pleasantries.
She wore a blue corset gown and had her hair tied in a bun, with a long golden hairpin holding it together.
When her eyes landed on Rowland and me, her smile faltered for a second, but she was able to cover it up and open her arms.
“Oh, Beta Negan. I’m so glad you could make it.” She had a grin on her face as she drew me into an embrace.
Any outsider who saw this scene would think she was a kind woman who saw me like a son.
But I knew something was up.
I’d be a fool to believe for one second that she planned all this simply for the fun of it.
Anyway, after pulling out of the embrace, I plastered my best smile on my face. “The pleasure is all mine, Catherine. This auction party is already looking like it’s going to be a blast.” I remarked.
Some people wore masks to the event and I wasn’t exempted. The party was tagged as an auction/masquerade party in the invitation card after all.
“I really hope so. I put a lot of work into planning this.” She revealed, her smile only deepening.
That was a lot of smiling for a woman who once upon a time, didn’t trust me as the Beta after my father died.
If it weren’t for the relationship I was able to build with her son, I’m certain she would’ve done everything in her power to ensure I never became the Beta.
Oh well… That was all in the past anyway.
“Are the Alpha and Luna inside?” I asked, stretching my neck to get a glimpse of the interior.
Catherine’s smile faltered once again when I said ‘Luna’ but damn, was she good at masking her true feelings.
“Yeah, they’re inside. Just go in there and make yourself comfortable, okay?” She placed her hand on my shoulder, smiling at me.
I returned her fake smile with one of my own before walking past her, Rowland trailing closely behind me.
“Oh, she’s definitely planning something diabolical.” He muttered, causing me to grin widely.
Hopefully, whatever she has planned will be entertaining.
The large living room was used to host the party.
Several men and women dotted the vicinity, chattering and discussing while browsing through jewelry items kept on shelves around us, each protected under a glass casing.
I exchanged pleasantries with a few guests and took a seat in front of the makeshift stage, where a large projector screen was placed.
My gaze trailed the place in search of Kaene and Phoebe. If only they knew that they were the stars of an upcoming play.
A maid walked toward me just then, holding a tray with glasses of wine.
I took a glass, taking a sip while adjusting my sitting position.
Just then, I spotted her.

Phoebe.
She was elegantly dressed in a black form-fitting gown that sparkled on the lights of the living room turned Hall and had her hair cascading behind her.
She also wore a black cat mask, making her beauty even more mysterious.
She was currently having a conversation with a noblewoman, smiling awkwardly while nodding her head.
It was clear she didn’t want to be here but had no choice.
And there weren’t any signs of Kaene either.
“I’m going in…” I muttered, getting up and glancing back at Rowland who stood calmly behind me. “Wish me luck.”
Without another word, I walked away, adjusting the buttons of my suit while scrutinizing Phoebe.
She looked good enough to eat, except I didn’t have an appetite for pure-blood wolves.
If I had my way, I would snatch her out of here and tear off her clothing one by one until she was butt naked and then have her all to myself.
Too bad actions like that are beneath me. If I wanted a woman that bad, I didn’t have to chase her.
When I was merely some meters away from her, she turned her gaze away from the noblewoman who’d left to talk to someone else.
It was then that she spotted me, her gaze softening as she scrutinized me.
I relished the effect I had on her despite all the ‘fun’ she’d been having with her mate.
“At the end of the day, she knows that no one will come close to matching my–” I was about to praise myself but at that same moment, Kaene walked toward Phoebe, wrapping his arm around her waist.
He whispered something into her ears, which made her giggle lightly as she caressed his hands tenderly.
For some odd reason, I felt my blood boil watching the scene, my hands clenched as I glared daggers at the pair.
Look at them, living a relationship filled with lies and betrayal.
Hmph… If only I could personally give them a wake-up call by showing them the clip myself.
But I withheld myself, going with the flow as I finally got to them, playing around with the wine glass in my hand.
“Ah, Negan.” Kaene’s face lit up with a smile when he turned and saw me. “I almost thought you wouldn’t show up.”
I glanced briefly at Phoebe who tried her best to avoid eye contact in Kaene’s presence.
How pathetic.
Clearing my throat, I spoke with my usual cheery tone. “Well, how could I refuse to show up when your mother came to invite me herself? I don’t want my head mounted on the walls, Kaene.”
My statement caused both of us to chuckle, but I didn’t completely mean it as a joke.
I admit that my methods are a bit… Unorthodox, but Catherine seemed like the person who could kill an entire family without batting an eye.
And even though she was merely a pawn in my game, I had to be careful.
Everyone knows that even a pawn can become an important piece.
