Chapter 71: _Everything Will Be Much Clearer
“What sort of ‘party’, mother?” I asked with dimmed eyes, folding my arms in front of my chest.
She rolled her eyes. “And why are you looking at me like that as if you don’t know how obsessed with parties I used to be back in the day?”
Oh, probably because of the timing of this one.
Anyone with half a brain would know something was off, especially me, who’s known this woman for the entirety of my twenty-seven years of existence.
“Anyway, I have the party all planned out.” My mother clapped her hands excitedly. “We’ll hold it right here in the mansion and it will be a masquerade and charity party. All the elites of the pack will be invited, and at the party, we’ll be auctioning out some of our most expensive jewelry collections from around the world.”
Jewelry collection?
“Mom, if you’re trying to prove a point after Phoebe destroyed your necklace, I don’t think it’s–” I was about to give my two cents on what I thought, but Mom wasn’t having it.
“Oh, shush, boy! Everything isn’t about that servant Luna of yours.” She harrumphed, making sure her voice was loud enough for Phoebe to hear her inside the room.
I rubbed my face with my palm, speechless and regretting why I kept talking.
“All I need is your permission to host the party.” She held my hand just then, forcing me to look into her eyes. “Right here in the Alpha mansion. I’m not even asking for funds, just give me the green light, son.”
She blinked at me expectantly, her eyes seeming like she was scrutinizing mine until I was forced to look away.
“When is the party supposed to be held?” I asked calmly.
She smirked. “Three days from now. It’ll be held at night, of course.”
How convenient…
Well, since it was a party for the elites, it was doable.
I couldn’t afford to let the lower class members of the pack mingle at such proximity when there was currently a murder investigation going on in the estate.
Not to mention, we still had that poison wine incident at the Luna Ball to investigate.
Gosh… So much work.
“Well?” My mother’s voice drew me back to reality.
Sighing, I shrugged. “Alright, mother, you can go ahead. Just… Try and make it as drama-free as possible.”
My mother’s smile widened as she caressed my cheeks before walking away.
“You didn’t assure me that It’ll be drama-free!” I yelled after her, my voice echoing in the hallway, but she didn’t even turn around to glance at me.
Goddess, I hope I don’t regret this.
“Assure you that what will be drama-free?” Phoebe asked from inside the suite, forcing me to turn my gaze to her.
She arched an eyebrow, still having nothing but her towel covering her body.
Closing the door behind me, I muttered. “My mother plans to host a masquerade charity… Whatever party in three days. So she was asking for my permission.”
I proceeded to hop on the bed, making myself comfortable in my underwear.
But Phoebe seemed confused. “So, she’s not mad about the necklace I ‘destroyed’?”
I sat up, my gaze trailing her body before I spoke. “What’s with the emphasis on ‘destroyed’? Didn’t you destroy it?”
At this point, I was exhausted from all the arguing but I knew deep down that something was off with Elsa’s story.

“Your little friend, Miss Thatcher, literally snatched the necklace out of my hands and refused to give it back despite all the times I begged her to,” Phoebe revealed with a sigh. “But of course, you’ll believe her story over mine.”
Ugh, here we go again.
“Phoebe, it’s too late for this.” I groaned before gesturing at the free space on the bed. “Just sleep and forget about it. We can argue for as long as you want tomorrow. Or, at least until I leave for work.”
Phoebe furrowed her eyebrows before pointing out the obvious. “This is MY suite, remember? Aren’t you supposed to retire to yours?”
Why was she being so difficult?
“What? Is it a crime for me to sleep on the same bed as my mate?” I queried with squinted eyes, my tone showing my growing annoyance.
Phoebe quickly waved both of her hands in front of her face, shaking her head. “No, no, no. I didn’t say that. It’s just… We’ve rarely slept on the same bed since we got together.”
I stared at her for a few seconds before stretching my hand, gesturing for her to come to the bed.
Reluctantly, after heading back into the bathroom to have a complete bath and then putting on a nightgown, she hopped beside me on the bed.
I wrapped my arm around her body and almost sniggered when she stiffened in surprise.
“Why so tense?” I drawled, bringing my mouth close to her ears.
She blushed, trying hard to look away at first but eventually giving in.
For the first time in our relationship, Phoebe and I slept snuggled up together. We would need it for the upcoming ‘party’, knowing our luck with those recently.

Three days later, in the late hours of the evening, I came back from work to see the mansion decorated and ready for the party.
I scanned my gaze around the compound before walking into the mansion, heading straight for my suite to have a change of clothes.
The large living room where the party was being held was currently filled with maids and workers arranging the place and making sure everything was in order.
My mother was directing them, barking orders, and making sure everything was perfect.
Good for her, I guess…
Anyway, I got to the stairs and was about to make a turn at the beginning of the hallway when I almost bumped into Elsa.
I took a step back, coughing awkwardly before giving her space to pass.
But she did the same thing, her face reddening with a blush.
Now what was this about?
“Welcome, my Alpha. I hope work wasn’t too–” She was about to waste my time with meaningless questions, but I wasn’t having it.
“Work was fine, Elsa,” I stated plainly, my gaze trailing her.
She had a golden mask that was almost shaped like a star on her face and wore a golden strapless, form-fitting satin gown.
Anyway, she proceeded to place a hand on my wrist, looking into my eyes. “Don’t worry, darling. Everything will be much clearer to you after tonight.” She remarked.
A frown appeared on my face as I opened my mouth, about to question her on what she meant by that.
However, she walked away, climbing down the stairs while holding onto her gown.
