Chapter 72: _The Worst Was Yet To Come
After getting into my suite, I changed my clothes into an elegant black suit with a coattail.
I didn’t bother putting on a mask even though it was a masquerade party and gave myself one final glance in the mirror before walking out of the suite.
When I got downstairs, I scanned my gaze around, realizing that I hadn’t seen Phoebe since I got back.
Maybe she was in her suite…
Just then, I spotted her… Phoebe.
My mouth went wide in surprise at how beautiful she was.
She wore a black gown that sparkled under the lights of the room, had her hair cascading behind her like a waterfall, and was discussing with a noblewoman.
Her smile and her laughter, even from this distance, were infectious; even though it was clear to me that she was forcing it.
Eventually, the noblewoman left Phoebe’s side, and she sighed, fiddling with her fingers while looking around.
Taking the opportunity, I walked up to her and surprised her by wrapping my arm around her waist.
She jolted at first until I whispered into her ears. “You look ravishing in black. How about we skip this party and go have a ‘dance’ at my suite?”
Her body seemed to heat up just then but she responded. “I don’t think your mother would be pleased with that idea.”
She giggled when I breathed into her ear intending to tickle her.
When I pulled away from her, I took a closer look at her face.
She wore a black cat-like mask with intricate designs on its surface.
“A werewolf wearing a cat mask…” I mused. “Now that’s ironic.”
She giggled again, rolling her eyes at me.
Just then, Beta Negan approached us and we began chatting, catching up about work and casual stuff.
During our conversation, I could’ve sworn I noticed Phoebe being hesitant with looking directly at the Beta, her attention seemingly split.
Now that was odd…
Suddenly, a high-pitched chime sound echoed around the hall, forcing everyone to turn their gazes to the makeshift stage.
My mother stood there with a grin on her face, looking as glamorous as always.
“Welcome, everyone, to this masquerade party!” She spoke into the microphone placed in her ears.
Everyone present clapped, some of them already bubbling with excitement.
A spotlight was placed on my mother while the rest of the room was dimly lit.
I subconsciously held Phoebe’s hand just then, glancing at her with a smirk on my face.
She smiled at me as well before we turned our gazes back to mummy dearest herself.
“I’d like to thank our Alpha, my son, for making this event possible.” My mother gestured at me from the stage, prompting everyone present to clap as the spotlight focused on me briefly.
After a few seconds, she continued. “Anyway, if you read through the invitation letters, you’ll know our agenda for tonight. The jewelry pieces around you are merely just for display. I’ll be revealing the main pieces when the auction begins.”
Ugh, I never liked auctions.

It seemed like an excuse for people to come together and flaunt how wealthy they were.
I didn’t want that much attention on me, even as the Alpha.
“But before that, continue enjoying yourselves and mingling.” My mother finalized before stepping out of the stage.
Just then, soft music began playing as the entire room was lit up yet again.
“Ugh, how romantic,” Negan muttered jokingly just then, taking a sip from the glass of wine in his hands.
Phoebe chuckled as we went to take our seats while some people flooded the center of the room to dance.
.
.
After about an hour or so, my mother mounted the stage again with a cheery smile.
The music died down as the spotlight focused on her again.
After clearing her throat, she began. “Alright, I hope you all had your fun. Now it’s time for the main business of tonight.”
Just then, a male butler walked in holding a black suitcase.
Phoebe and I were currently seated at the front and I couldn’t help squinting my eyes, wondering what could be in the suitcase.
“We’ll be starting the auction strong with an exceptionally beautiful piece.” She began before snapping her fingers, signaling the butler to open the suitcase.
When he did, some people murmured in surprise when the piece was revealed and then shown on the projection screen.
“This is the Phoenix twin necklace and earrings. Made with pure gold and sapphire.” She had a bright smile, her gaze scanning the room before she continued. “The starting price will be five hundred thousand.”
Five hundred thousand?!
Those things looked like they were worth millions. Was mom throwing away these pieces, or…
“I’ll bid six hundred thousand dollars!” A woman yelled excitedly at the end of the room.
“Eight hundred thousand!”
“One million!”
Oh… Why, of course.
Now I understood my mother’s tactic. She started the bid with a cheap price so people would be encouraged to bid higher.
I glanced at her, noticing the smirk on the corner of her lips.
Eventually, the earrings and necklace were sold for five million dollars to none other than Mr. Thatcher himself, who made a show by publicly giving them to his daughter, Elsa.
Anyway, the auction continued smoothly, with several impressive jewelry pieces being brought out.
At one point, a ruby necklace caught my attention and I ended up buying it for just two million.
Some people tried bidding for it at first but eventually gave up, not daring to challenge me.
“Red would suit a feisty lady like yourself, don’t you think?” I whispered at Phoebe with a slight smirk as the necklace was brought to us in a well-packaged manner.
However, my mother cleared her throat just then, forcing us to turn our gazes to her.
“We’re almost coming to the end of the auction, unfortunately.” She announced with a wry smile.
The people mumbled, some of them regretting the fact that they hadn’t been able to successfully buy something yet.
“Fret not, people.” My mother raised her hand, seeming all queenly. “I have a few more surprises in store–”
Suddenly, her mic got cut off and we couldn’t hear her again.
The room erupted into murmurs as the lights suddenly went off as well.
“What’s happening?”
“Is it a power outage?”
People complained among themselves all around the room.
But little did I know that the worst was yet to come.
Suddenly, the projection screen lit up, playing a video that caused everyone to gasp in shock.
