Rivers of the Night - Chapter 292
Chapter 292: Go
There were two paths that Theron had known he could take.
The first was to scout out the region in silence and try to pick up information that way. But the odds of this succeeding were minimal. His concealment abilities weren’t top-notch, especially not when dealing with a group of espionage experts, and even less when they were mostly Gold Mancers.
He didn’t care about the Silver Assassins, as he was confident he could kill them all since they were trapped here. If need be, he could be a one-man army. He had grown used to that.
But against Gold Assassins? Setting aside what other abilities they might have, not all of them would be in the First Resonance like the one Theron had met, and they also wouldn’t necessarily try to sneak attack him like that either.
The Gold Assassin had chosen stealth over power, which was why Theron overpowered them so easily. But Theron wasn’t yet to the point that he could just casually deal with any Gold Mancer whenever he pleased, though he wasn’t too far from it.
Regardless, there were far more than just First Resonance Gold Assassins here—there were definitely many in the mid-tiers, and at least some in the high-tiers.
The gap between every level was enormous, and Theron didn’t have 100% confidence in dealing with even Third Resonance Gold Mancers, let alone mid-tiers or beyond.
That left this path. It was probably even riskier, but it was a necessary evil.
Especially since there was a small chance that he could find out more about the piece of the moon as well. He didn’t trust the old man to tell him the full truth about that, and part of him still believed that the Cadence of the Crypt hadn’t actually expected him to find it.
The moment Theron’s words fell, the atmosphere shifted. Everyone had already been observing him, but now he could feel the sharpness of their gazes raking across his skin.
“The branch has been compromised?” a gruff voice asked.
“Not yet.”
“Then why is there a barrier up?” a particularly sweet voice chimed in.
“This is a failsafe that triggers whenever my master is away for a certain period of time. She wasn’t able to easily return this time because of the changes, so she didn’t have the time to turn it off. She could only send me because I’m the only one capable of making it through.”
“You are a Space Mancer?” the gruff voice asked again.
“No.”
A silence fell.
“Then why can you?” the sweet voice asked.
“Why would I tell you that?”
A light giggle came from the sweet voice. “Maybe because if it’s a treasure, we can just take it off of your corpse.”
At some point, the position of the voice had shifted from being unclear to right behind one of Theron’s ears.
The reason Theron could only point out voices and not the figures they came from was because it had never been clear where the voices were being projected from.
Everyone was cloaked, their bodies mostly hidden, and their faces shrouded. It was impossible to even tell their genders, and though the gruff voice sounded like a man who had been chain-smoking all his life, and the sweet voice sounded like the girl next door, the former could have easily been a woman while the latter might have been a man.
The moment you started making assumptions about assassins was the moment you would die.
“Your tricks are unamusing,” Theron said casually, not even looking over his shoulder because he knew that no one was there. Instead, his gaze shifted and his eyes landed on the form of a burly behemoth—one of the few people whose figure was actually quite clear. “Play them on someone else.”
The sweet voice came to a stop, but Theron had already looked away. His warning was clear enough. But, clearly… assassins were also adept at toeing the line of life and death.
Even after being exposed, the voice only paused for a short few seconds.
“Interesting,” the sweet voice continued, “not a single one of these assassins could pick me out, but you did the moment you walked in. Do you want me to believe that your perception is beyond that of Gold Assassins as a little Silver Mancy boy? Or do you think it makes more sense for me to believe that you have a perception-boosting treasure on your person instead? Maybe the very same treasure that helped you move through the spatial field?”
The aura of a high-tier Gold Mancer suddenly bloomed, pressing down on Theron as one question after another was asked at a cadence that was quite slow and deliberate.
“It seems you don’t know when to take warnings seriously,” Theron said casually. “Let’s do a Dagger Call and we’ll see who’s lying. Are you really under the impression that what I’m capable of and what you are can be put on the same level?”

The eyes of the burly assassin with the sweet voice narrowed. There was a flash beneath his hood, and Theron’s arm seemed to move on its own.
DENG.
Theron didn’t even take a step back, the dart that had been flung toward him jetting back and landing right in front of the toe of the assassin.
All of the Gold Assassins fell into silence, and then their gazes shifted toward the First Resonance Gold Assassin that had brought Theron here. Watching them continue to dress their wounds, their eyes couldn’t help but narrow further.
A Silver Assassin dealing such a blow to a Gold Assassin… Even if Theron really did have a perception-boosting treasure, the fact that he was a great talent was undeniable.
“Dagger Call, is it?” the burly assassin sneered, standing to their feet. “Let’s go.”
Theron didn’t hesitate to turn to the door, walking out with confident strides.
Seeing Theron’s confidence, there was some hesitation in the assassin’s step, but it was brief and fleeting. Soon, a sneer had spread across their lips.
