Runemaster in the Last Days - Chapter 87
Chapter 87: The Base (2)
‘Then again, not everyone might learn this skill.’
Riya only learned how to make mana stone because she wanted to earn her own resources to make formation. If it was not necessary, many people would not bother learning about it because condensing mana stone took time. The time that they could spend meditating or doing other things.
So after thinking for a bit, it was not that surprising for Samuel not to know this skill.
Besides, while that mist had increased mana concentration, one needed a large amount of mist to make the mana stone. With the mist contaminated with virus, even Riya didn’t dare to make the mana stone directly.
“Mana?” Ruby heard this term for the first time and looked at Sean with doubts. “You’re not joking with me, right?”
There was no such thing in her entire life before. And now being told that there were something called mana in this world… Ruby was full of disbelief.
“Haha, Amelia can tell you more,” Sean said lightly.
When his older brother started to spread this knowledge, he and his parents were also full of disbelief. Amelia even went straight to her brother to check his forehead and see whether he had fever or not.
But after Samuel’s long explanation and performance, he came to understand that it was real.
But the mana in their world was really thin.
For them to truly achieve something, it would take a long time. Even now, the mana had only increased slightly and Samuel still said that it was not enough.
“I’ll tel you later,” Amelia promised and then looked at her brother again, “So what does it have anything to do with the base?”
“Because the world is about to change and when these magic beasts appeared, only city structure like base could possibly hold them off outside the city,” Sean replied. “There are several bases built in various cities, presumably one in each city and it would either be controlled by the military or at least cooperate with them.”
Riya listened to this and nodded.
It seemed that the era where people living in base would start and these people would definitely work hard to build taller walls in the future.
Because Riya knew very well that some higher ranked magic beasts could be as tall as a ten story building. Facing these kinds of magic beasts, their city wall was nothing more than child’s play.
But at least, there was something.
The lower ranked magic beasts could be blocked by these walls and then they could use guns to hit it.
Of course, Riya herself would use magic to deal with it.
‘Can I combine magic with guns?’
In that world, there was no guns.
But now that there were guns in this world…. Riya felt that she should try getting her hand on one in the future.
Well, that was for later.
She had no time to care about this for now.
“So this base will be controlled by the military?” Amelia asked another question.
“No.” Sean grinned. “Our Jones Family had reached a cooperation agreement with the military. A few other families such as the Carson Family were also doing negotiations. It should have been settled soon but these magic beasts just have to come today.”
Sean shook his head.
He had been following his older brother in the past few days and he had to say that he was convinced with his older brother’s ability. To be able to strike an agreement with the military and then made the other families also wanted to cooperate…
It was not that easy.
But the world has already changed and who could stand on the top in the end remained unknown.

“Carson… is Sophia here?” Amelia’s eyes lit up.
“No, she’s still in the other community but I heard that they’ll move over to the base tomorrow at the latest.”
Outside…?
Amelia looked out and frowned. She hoped that her friend would be fine.
“Alright, let’s settle your two friends first.” Sean looked at Ruby and Riya. He was not too familiar with Amelia’s friends, but he knew that these two were unlikely to be settled in their house.
Samuel didn’t really like it when they brought outsiders into their house for some reasons. So even Sean’s friends were staying outside in the areas arranged by the base.
“About this, is it possible for me to work for the base?” Ruby suddenly asked.
Hearing the explanation about the base and the fact that the world would change, Ruby decided to take her chance. She knew that she couldn’t possibly go out and fight against those magic beasts.
Her skills were very pitiful and her physical strength was also questionable.
What she wanted the most was to study these magic beasts’ corpses.
“Yes?” Sean was confused.
Ruby quickly explained that she wanted to become a researcher and said about her previous experience as an assistant. While being an assistant was not too glorious, but it could help to ascertain about her ability.
Amelia also nodded and said, “Ruby is really good. Can you arrange this, Sean?”
“This kind of thing need Brother Samuel to arrange.” Sean shrugged. “I’ll to him tomorrow but for now, you’ll be arranged in the mansion nearby. There are my friends there and he’ll bring you there.”
The guard stepped forward and Ruby nodded.
She was not in a hurry.
As long as there was a chance for her to continue working in this field that she loved, then she didn’t mind waiting.
“As for you…” Sean turned to look at Riya, not sure what kind of arrangement to make.
“I’m not going to stay in the base,” Riya finally said it first.
She knew that this base might become the first base in the future or something. There would be a lot of resources with the military around, but she didn’t want her skills to be exposed so quickly.
Riya knew very well that she was still very weak.
And….
What she wanted the most was to go to that crack.
