Chapter 1456: Subtle threat
Sitting in the dining room was the Elven King and a few of the other high elves.

This was certainly not what I had been expecting to see early in the morning, but it seemed like they had been here for a while now.

It even seemed like they were settled with the way that they already had food in front of them.

Once the Elven King saw us come in, he waved his hand at me and said, “Your majesty, come and have a taste. This is some of the best hospitality that our Elven Kingdom can offer.”

The way that he spoke was as if he was talking to a friend, but I couldn’t see it that way.

After all, there was no reason that the Elven King would come all this way just to have breakfast with us.

There were plenty of other opportunities for us to meet, so why would he choose breakfast?

That was unless he had figured something out.

Unless he had noticed something.

“Was it the fact that we snuck out last night?” That was the only thing that I could think of that would cause the Elven King to move, but I wasn’t certain of this. After all, I just couldn’t read the expressions of the Elven King at all.

The only thing that he did was look at us with a smile on his face that made it seem like he was our best friend.

Seeing that we didn’t say anything, the Elven King waved his hand at a few of the maids and they moved into action.

They prepared the food for us and even pulled out our seats before standing behind them as if they were waiting for us to sit. With the way that they stood there, it was as if they wouldn’t leave unless we sat down.

It almost seemed like there was a trace of desperation that was in their eyes as they looked at us.

Seeing them like this gave me a bad feeling, so I went forward to sit down in the end.

However, it didn’t seem like the maids would let me sit where I wanted.

In the end, I had no choice but to take the seat that was right beside the Elven King.

The rest of my group was made to sit around the high elves and the one that was separated from us was Aisha. She was made to sit on the completely opposite side as me and the Elven King, as if they didn’t want us close to each other.

It didn’t seem like Aisha was happy with this, but she went along with it when she saw me going along with it.

I could tell that she was thinking the same thing as me, so she wanted to see just what would happen.

Once we were all sitting, the Elven King once again said with a smile, “Go on and have a taste. This is some of the best that our Elven Kingdom has to offer.”

“There wouldn’t be any poison, right?” That was the only thing that I was thinking.

It was just that when the Elven King was looking at me like this, I really had no choice but to eat.

Delicious.

Well it didn’t seem like there was any fast acting poison and the food was indeed quite delicious.

It was just that I wasn’t really in the mood to eat with the Elven King here.

So I took a bite before putting the cutlery down and turning back to look at the Elven King.

With a calm look, I asked, “Your majesty, it’s an honour to have you visit us for breakfast like this. Is there anything that I can do for you?”

The Elven King’s expression didn’t change when he heard this.

He just calmly looked at me with the same smile before saying, “How could that be? We’re the hosts here, so it’s only natural that we should take care of our guests. Though I do suppose that I am intruding a bit by suddenly showing up here.”

I couldn’t help feeling a bit surprised, but I didn’t let it show on my face as I waited to hear what else he had to say.

The Elven King calmly continued by saying, “It’s just that it’s rare enough that one of our own comes back after all this time. It’s normally hard to even get a glimpse of this one, but now she comes back all on her own.”

As he said this, he slowly turned to look at Aisha.

Once he was looking at Aisha, he said, “But it only makes sense that one should spend time with their own. This place is her home, so it’s only natural that she would want to come back after all that time outside.”

Turning back to me, he said, “Don’t you think so, your majesty?”

As he looked at me, I could tell that there was a bit of strangeness to his smile.

In a way, it was almost as if he was threatening me.

When I saw the Elven King like this, I couldn’t help raising one brow.

And the only thing that I could think was…

“Is that really it? Is this the only reason that he came here today?”

After all, it was very clear what he meant by these words and I understood why he did it. That just went to show how important Aisha was to the Elven Kingdom since she was a return to their roots.

If they could spread her line, then there was no doubt that the elves would be one step closer to returning to the days they were high elves blessed by Vivrum. In a way, it was similar to the fanaticism that the people of the Holy Empire demonstrated.

But was this really all that he came here to do?

It seemed like it was a bit underwhelming compared to what I thought he would be here for.

“Is there something wrong?” The Elven King asked after seeing that I didn’t say anything.

I just shook my head as I came back to my senses and said, “It’s nothing. It’s just that I don’t feel like I have a right to comment on this. This is more something that the person in question should answer.”
