Chapter 201: Cooperation
Tiny eddies of wind swirled across the battlefield, scattering burnt grass and broken shards of ice. A hush fell over the battered ground as both pairs of combatants stared one another down, their labored breathing echoing in the near-silence.
The tense moment stretched on until finally, the Fire War Horse snorted and stomped the ground, igniting the turf beneath its hooves.
Little White’s keen senses picked up on a sudden shift in the horses’ auras, and his silver fur bristled with alarm.
“They’re planning something big.” His voice wavered slightly in the mental link he shared with Frostfang.
Frostfang gave a curt nod, reading the swirling magical energy coalescing around the War Horses. Their eyes now shone with a fierce glow, and embers of bright green fused with blazing crimson across their bodies. “This must be their ultimate techniques,” Frostfang muttered. “Stay on guard.”
The War Horses unleashed twin roars that boomed across the grassland, resonating with a power that shook the earth. Their auras surged, fusing their individual elemental attributes into a devastating union of flame and foliage.
The Fire War Horse’s mane erupted into a towering blaze, while the Wood War Horse’s bark-like armor thickened into a vibrant, pulsing lattice of living wood. Energy crackled between them, forming arcs that bridged the gap—life and flame merging into a single cataclysmic force.
In unison, the beasts charged forward. The Fire War Horse’s hooves scorched the ground with each thunderous step, and the Wood War Horse’s vines lashed out, embedding themselves into the earth and dragging its massive body at an accelerated pace.
Together, they seemed unstoppable, their synergy woven into a brilliant tapestry of unstoppable momentum.
Little White gulped, summoning every ounce of focus he had. He glanced at Frostfang, who offered him a reassuring nod. Though battered and drained, the pair of wolves had grown in their coordination over the course of the battle. Now it was time to put their newfound unity to the ultimate test.
Their plan was simple: Stagger the War Horses’ approach, then strike decisively once a vulnerability emerged. With an exchange of quick mental signals, they moved. Little White darted to the right, using [Moonlight Empowerment] to boost his speed, while Frostfang took to the left with [Frozen Sprint], a coating of frost forming around his paws to let him glide over scorched earth.
The War Horses, however, had no intention of letting themselves be split. The Fire War Horse let out a searing neigh and used [Inferno Stampede], and its entire frame flared with flame, a swirling vortex of heat enveloping it in a protective cloak.
Simultaneously, the Wood War Horse invoked its [Living Fortress], thick roots erupting from the ground to encase both equines in an interlinked shield of bark and flame.
A fierce wave of heat expanded outward, blasting the two wolves with scorching wind and peppering them with cinders.
Frostfang hissed in pain, the fur on his side singed from a molten spark. Little White, forced to shield his eyes, retreated a few steps as he tried to plot a path through the swirling flames and vines.
They had to break that synergy, or they’d be overwhelmed.
Frostfang dug his claws in. He inhaled deeply, then expelled a frigid blast of air using his skill [Glacial Howl] that manifested as a cone of sub-zero wind.
The swirling flames crackled, resisting the intense cold, but eventually some of the heat receded. Encouraged, Little White lunged in from the side, aiming a well-timed [Silver Fang] at the newly revealed flank of the Wood War Horse.
The War Horse whinnied in alarm as Little White’s fangs tore into the protective bark, leaving behind a glowing silver wound that sizzled with lunar energy. The synergy faltered for just a moment, and that was all the opening the wolves needed.
“Now!” Frostfang’s mental voice thundered.
Little White tore himself away from the War Horse, deftly weaving beneath its stomping hooves.
Frostfang seized the opportunity, summoning every shred of icy energy he possessed into a single, colossal spike of ice as he used his [Glacial Titan’s Spear] skill, which erupted from beneath the War Horses, attempting to skewer them from below.
But the War Horses wouldn’t be so easily vanquished. Drawing on their synergy, the Wood War Horse’s vines twined with the Fire War Horse’s flames, forming a swirling barrier that deflected the ice spear at the last moment, causing it to splinter into a thousand shards. Chunks of ice rained across the battlefield, pattering against the scorched grass like hail.
Yet even as they blocked the spear, the War Horses cried out in pain. The deflection had cost them a great deal of energy, and their ultimate synergy was clearly waning. Steam hissed at the edges of their improvised shield, hinting at exhaustion creeping into their limbs.
Little White, grimacing from his own burns and cuts, pressed the attack. He unleashed a combined technique of [Silver Eclipse] and [Lunar Slash], sending a radiant slash of silver brilliance surging toward the battered barrier. The Fire War Horse roared, trying to mount a final defense by igniting a blazing wave of flame.
Before the flame could fully expand, Frostfang darted forward, his eyes shining with calm determination. He channeled a final burst of cold into his muzzle and released his skill [Absolute Winter]. An intense blast of sub-zero frost that tore through the War Horses’ protective synergy.
The next moments blurred into a chaos of shattering ice and dying flames. The War Horses’ combined shield fractured under the unrelenting assault from both wolves, bits of bark and cinders flying through the air. The Fire War Horse stumbled, flames sputtering, while the Wood War Horse whinnied in terror as layers of bark-like armor crumbled away.
With a ferocious snarl, Little White pounced on the Fire War Horse, raking his claws along its hindquarters. The creature kicked wildly, but it had lost too much strength to land a solid blow.
Meanwhile, Frostfang seized the Wood War Horse’s mane in his jaws, his cold breath freezing the green energy coursing through its vines.
