Chapter 113: Genevieve’s Secretary
Just as the waiter cleared the table after Genevieve was done eating, her phone rang, and she smiled when she saw it was call from ‘Jamal’.
She turned away from Abigail as she received the call, “Hey!”
“I’m done with the errand now. Are you at home? Pete can drive me down to your house and then we can leave together,” Stefan suggested as he and Jamal got into the car after their meeting with the real Pete.
“I’m not home. I’m out with Abigail. But you can come meet me here. Pete can take Abigail home while we leave together,” Genevieve said, telling him the name of the restaurant.
“I’ll be on my way. I look forward to meeting Abigail,” Stefan said before hanging up, and Genevieve realized too late that she shouldn’t have made that suggestion.
What if Abigail recognizes Jamal when she sees him? What if Jamal recognizes Abigail? Although Abigail no longer looked like Dawn, Genevieve still couldn’t help being scared that the two might recognize each other.
As much as she felt guilty that she was deceiving Jamal and stealing Abigail’s crush, she didn’t want to let go of him. She liked Jamal. He treated her nicely and made her feel like a good person. She didn’t want to lose that friendship.
While she was still lost in her thoughts, Abigail typed on her phone. [Can I ask you a question?]
Genevieve looked at Abigail when she heard the question since Abigail had used her text to speech app.
“What?” Genevieve snapped, her voice sounding sharper than she intended because of her guilt and worry about Jamal meeting Abigail.
Abigail’s brows pulled together when she heard Genevieve’s tone, and she wondered if Genevieve was going back to her normal personality.
Genevieve sighed, realizing that she had come off harshly, she forced a smile, “Sorry. What did you want to ask me?” She asked, sounding calmer now.
Abigail shook her head, deciding not to ask her any question anymore.
“What’s your question?” Genevieve asked again.
[Never mind.] Abigail typed in the text to speech app.
She had wanted to ask Genevieve why she was helping her but after the manner and tone Genevieve responded just now, she decided that it was too soon to think of Genevieve as someone on her side.
Genevieve must have her own selfish reason for doing what she was doing. It was more likely that Genevieve was doing it for herself.
Soon Genevieve received a call from Stefan informing her that they were outside the restaurant, and she rose immediately. She did not want Abigail to follow her down to meet Stefan.
“I have to go. I have a date. Pete will come get you and take you home. If you don’t feel like going home yet, you can do whatever you want until you’re ready to go. If he calls I’ll tell him we are still together,” Genevieve said, wanting to relieve her guilt by doing something nice for Abigail.
Abigail gave her a nod and watched as she hurried away.
As Genevieve stepped outside the restaurant after taking care of the bill, she saw Stefan getting out of the car and she hurried over to meet him, not wanting him to come inside.
“Hey! Let’s go,” she said with an excited smile.
“What about Abigail? I thought you were here with her? I want to see her,” Stefan said, looking past Genevieve.
“She’s still eating. I don’t want you to meet her now. You can always meet her some other time, let’s go,” Genevieve said, grabbing Stefan’s hand.
Stefan wanted to protest but when he glanced at Jamal, and Jamal jerked his head, asking him to leave, he gave in.
“Pete, you can take Abigail home when she’s ready to leave,” Genevieve instructed and pulled Stefan with her to where she had parked the other car.
Jamal watched them go, and waited in the car until they had driven off before he got out of the car and made his way inside the restaurant.
He was glad that Genevieve had decided to leave Abigail behind for him to take her home.
As he walked into the restaurant, he looked around and easily spotted Abigail seated at one of the tables.
He walked over to where she was and gave her a polite nod, “Are you ready to leave?” He asked, and Abigail resisted the urge to smile at him.

She gave him a nod as she rose, and together they went out to the car. The moment they got into the car, Jamal turned in his seat to look at her.
“Do you think Ryan might have seen the text last night?” Jamal asked and her eyes widened in alarm and she signed.
[Why are you asking me that inside the car? What if he is listening?]
“Don’t worry, Stefan got someone to check the car last night. It’s clean,” Jamal assured her.
[Are you sure?] she asked, still reluctant to speak.
“You should know I won’t do anything to put you in danger,” he said, and she relaxed.
“He didn’t see it. My screen was turned down. Why do you ask?” she asked with concern.
“I was just wondering.”
“Genevieve said Ryan might want to find out who I’m texting. I think he got curious about it,” she said, and Jamal sighed deeply after she told him all Genevieve had said.
“I think we will have to stop chatting or communicating with your phone. He might want to begin checking. Let’s not take chances,” Jamal said, and Abigail frowned.
“How are we supposed to communicate then? Should I get another phone?” She asked, and Jamal shook his head.
“That would be dangerous. What if he finds it?”
“He won’t,” Abigail said confidently.
“We need to be careful, Dawn. For your sake. Genevieve said he wants to look into me,” Jamal said changing the subject.
Abigail raised a brow. “Why would she tell you that?” Abigail asked wondering if Genevieve was stupid.
“Because she trusts me and believes I’m loyal to her,” Jamal said with a shrug and Abigail snorted.
“She should be letting her father do that instead of giving you a heads up. Anyway, good for us that she’s not very smart. So, what are we going to do about it?” She asked, referring to Ryan’s background search.
“We talked with Pete already. Thankfully and coincidentally he’s not from Westend himself. He relocated down here recently because of the job. His girlfriend is Genevieve’s former assistant and she helped him get the job. He is happy with his new job as well as my gift to him, so he promised to take care of things at his end and make sure everyone around him cooperates,” Jamal said, and Abigail nodded.
“That’s a relief. But if we won’t be chatting anymore how are we going to communicate?” She asked, not liking the idea of only seeing him whenever they ran into each other by coincidence.
Before Jamal could respond, her eyes lit up when an idea struck her. “Genevieve doesn’t have a secretary,” she said excitedly.
“I thought you were going to be doing that?” Jamal asked, wondering what that had to do with their discussion.
“I thought so too, but I guess they need me to do more serious brain work as usual. What is Pete’s qualification? Do you think you can make Ryan offer you the position?” She asked, and Jamal looked at her with disbelief and laughed.
“Why will I want to be a secretary?”
“We get to spend almost all our time together in the office. Genevieve said they wanted to employ a secretary who can sign. Genevieve trusts you, Ryan trusts you, I trust you. Who fits the position better than you?” She asked with a grin.
Before Jamal could respond, his phone started ringing, and he smiled when he saw it was Lucy.
