Chapter 137: Just Five Minutes
As Mari walked into her bedroom and closed the door behind her, she couldn’t help the smirk tugging at her lips.

If truly her parents had arranged this as she suspected, then she was not going to let them get away with it.

She could understand that they were worried about her, but they didn’t have to take such extreme measures.

What if she had killed one of those guys who kidnapped her? Not that she could have. But what IF?

Well, she could at least give them points for ensuring that her host was such a hot looking guy.

She giggled as she thought of Jax.

For a man who claimed to kidnap her, he sure had a way of making her feel oddly cared for.

So, if Jax was only following her father’s orders, who then was he? Did that mean he wasn’t a drug dealer? How was he connected to her father?

How did her father cause his father’s death? Why was he doing this for her father if her father caused his father’s death as his sister had said?

Mari paced around her room as she tried to figure him out.

After a while she walked to the bathroom and brushed her teeth. She made a face in the mirror as she brushed, then smiled at her reflection.

After rinsing her mouth, she padded back to the bed and crawled under the covers.

It was quiet again. But not the kind of quiet that scratched at her nerves. Just still. Calm.

Now that she believed she had an idea of what was going on, she was more relaxed. Although she still had questions that needed answers.

She knew Jax wouldn’t easily give her the answers seeing how stiff-lipped he was.

She grinned when she remembered how embarrassed he had looked when she took out the undies.

He could have a fuck buddy but was embarrassed to see the undies he had bought himself? How silly.

She giggled as she imagined what Diva’s reaction would be when she sees the gift she had left under Jax’s pillow.

She almost felt sorry for Jax — but she didn’t. How could she when she was so bored and needed as much drama as she could create.

Emily would have loved to write about this, Mari thought with a grin, thinking about Emily who loved to make a love story out of every situation.

Thinking about love stories, Mari sighed as her thoughts drifted to Jamal and she wondered what he was up to now, and if he had noticed that she was missing.

Emily should have arrived in Husla by now, she thought with a smile, wondering how Emily would be able to keep her distance from Callan and hide her feelings from him.

Thinking about all the drama and gists she was missing out on because Jax was holding her here, she sighed deeply.

She lay on the bed for hours thinking about everything and everyone and trying to keep her mind occupied since she knew that sleep would be far from her eyes after all the hours she had spent sleeping.

Bored with her thoughts now, she decided to go see what Jax was doing, and ask him to see a late night movie with her if he was still awake.

If he wasn’t awake, she was just going to have to wake him up. He shouldn’t be sleeping when his prisoner was wide awake.

Were kidnappers not supposed to have some sort of ethics? She mused as she wandered back upstairs to his bedroom.

She knocked on the door softly, “Jax?” She called, but there was no response.

She knocked again, and when there was still no response, she pushed it gently.

It creaked slightly as it opened wider. The room was dark save for a bedside lamp he had left on, the curtains were drawn shut. A cool air drifted out.

Mari stepped inside.

There he was.

Fast asleep.

He was lying sideways on his wide bed, one hand under his cheek, the other across his stomach. His white hair was messy, his chest rising and falling in slow rhythm under his black t-shirt.

Mari hesitated, torn between leaving him alone and staying. She stood in the quiet room looking at him.

How could he sleep so peacefully with his door open when he had a prisoner in the house? What if she was a crazy person and decided to kill him in his sleep?

Mari stepped closer, quiet as a mouse. She didn’t mean to. Her feet just moved. Or maybe she just wanted to get a closer look of his face as he slept.

He looked… tired. Different. Vulnerable, even.

Not the grumpy man who barely smiled. Not the one who threatened to break down her door. Just a tired guy sleeping. Peacefully.

She tilted her head to the side, studying him. There was a faint shadow under his eyes. His lashes were long. His lips parted just a little as he breathed.

She stood there, watching him, feeling strangely like touching his lips.

If this was one of Emily’s silly romance novels she’d probably kiss him, Mari thought with a grin as she slowly sat on the edge of the bed, careful not to wake him.

Mari froze and her heart jumped when he suddenly shifted slightly, brow twitching.

Thankfully he didn’t wake up. But he just mumbled something in his sleep and turned to his side, facing away from her. His breathing stayed steady.

Mari exhaled.

She looked back at him again.

“I bet you turned away because are shy even in your sleep,” she whispered.

Then, with a sigh, she rose up and walked over to the wall where he had appeared from earlier.

She ran her fingers over the wall looking for an opening or whatever would suggest a door was there, but she found nothing.

Was it an electronic door or something? What was behind the door? She pondered as she continued to look around to see if she would find a button or whatever.

When she got tired, she returned to the bed, going to the other edge where he had turned to, so that she could still see his face.

She lay on the bed, and then leaned back just slightly, her hands propping her up on the bed as she watched him sleep like a baby.

Mari assured herself that she would go to her bedroom soon. She would just stay there and watch him for a little while, and then she would return to her room.

She would just stay for a little while. Just five minutes.

Mari leaned back a bit more, resting on her elbows. Her eyes roamed across his face again — the way his hair curled at the tips, the steady rise and fall of his chest, the soft shadow of stubble on his jaw.

She didn’t even realize when her arms gave way and she sank into the mattress with a soft sigh. Her head found the pillow easily, as though it had been waiting for her. Her gaze lingered on Jax’s face for a few seconds longer.

Then, her eyes fluttered shut.

The cool air drifted gently across her skin. Her breathing slowed. And within moments… Mari was fast asleep.

One arm stretched loosely across her stomach, the other curled beneath her cheek — almost mirroring the sleeping figure beside her.
