Chapter 145: Good Work
Abigail tucked Jamal’s letter into the pocket of her blazer before walking into Genevieve’s office with Jamal.

Genevieve looked up from her phone when she heard them walk in, and then she rose up, “Abigail could you get Pete’s file from your office? I believe that was where Gloria left it,” Genevieve said, and Abigail gave her a nod as she rose to go get the file.

Jamal was very much relaxed since he knew that the real Pete and his girlfriend, Gloria, had stopped by the office the previous day to change the details on the file as agreed.

Genevieve looked at Jamal with a smile, “Are you anxious?”

Jamal shook his head. “I’m not.”

“Why not? Are you that confident that you’ll get the job?” Genevieve asked, arching her brow.

“No. I hope I get the job, but even if I don’t get it, I’m grateful that I still get to be your driver,” he said and Genevieve smiled, admiring his calmness.

“Well, I hope you get it. I’d prefer to have a familiar face I trust here than a stranger’s,” Genevieve said just as Abigail returned with the file.

Abigail placed the file in front of Genevieve, before taking her seat next to Jamal, as they both sat opposite Genevieve.

While Genevieve looked through the file, Abigail, who had scanned through the file before bringing it, looked at Jamal. She was both surprised and impressed by how Jamal had easily edited the contents.

No one would easily guess that he wasn’t the real Pete.

“You’ve got pretty good credentials, Pete,” Genevieve said, looking up, “but you’ve never had a secretarial job experience. Do you think you’d be able to do this?” Genevieve asked, and Jamal nodded.

“I’ve been reading up on the duties of a secretary and I think it’s pretty much common sense. I assure you that I will do a good job,” Jamal said confidently.

Genevieve nodded and turned to Abigail, “Do you have any questions for him?”

Abigail nodded, and then Genevieve gestured her to go ahead.

Abigail faced Jamal and signed. [How was your night?]

Jamal resisted the urge to smile. He tried to keep a straight face as he nodded. “I…”

[Sign back.]

Jamal nodded and signed back, [What are you doing?]

[Interviewing you. We need a secretary who knows how to rest well at night not one who is sleep deprived.]

This time Jamal laughed before he could stop himself, and Abigail smiled. Genevieve, who was watching them, raised a brow.

“What are you two saying?” Genevieve asked, feeling lost.

Jamal turned to Genevieve, “Ms Abigail wants to know why I’m being greedy by wanting to keep jobs. She says she’s not going to cut me any slacks if I under perform,” Jamal lied while Abigail eyed him with mock skepticism.

“Oh! Well, you can explain your accommodation issues to her,” Genevieve suggested, and Jamal nodded and turned to Abigail again.

[I was too worried to sleep. But you don’t have to worry. It won’t affect my productivity.] he assured her.

Abigail and Genevieve asked him some more questions about the duties of a secretary and how well he worked under pressure, and when they were done, Genevieve nodded with approv

“You will be working more closely with Abigail, than me. We will find a pace that makes the work easier on all three of us. Abigail will be handling the paperwork, while I’ll be handling the meetings and appointments. So, that means the paperworks should go to Abigail, and she can bring them to me if my input is needed. You can bring the meeting schedules to me. Abigail is going to need you more in the office than I would when I have appointments outside the office, so that means you don’t have to drive me around during work hours. You can stay back at the office, unless we are all going together,” Genevieve said, and both Abigail and Jamal nodded, satisfied with the arrangement.

“Does that mean I have the job?” Jamal asked with an expectant smile.

“It’s obvious everyone wants you to have it, so I don’t see why not,” Genevieve said with a wide smile and held out a hand to him, “Congratulations, Pete.”

“Thank you. Thank you so much. I promise not to let you down,” Jamal gushed happily, looking from Genevieve to Abigail and then back again.

Abigail tried not to roll her eyes at his performance as she typed on her text-to-speech app for Genevieve’s benefit. [Make sure you pour all that excitement into your job.]

“I will. I promise,” Jamal said with a chuckle, while Genevieve laughed as well.

“Pete, you can check the drawer on your desk. I believe Gloria left a handover journal. I’ll call for a team meeting soon so I can introduce you to the rest of the team. For now, you both can settle in,” Genevieve said, and they both rose to leave the office.

“Your father asked me to see him in his office after the interview. I’ll see him briefly,” Jamal said, and Genevieve gave him a nod.

Neither Abigail nor Jamal said a word to each other as they walked out of the office together, and while Abigail headed for the restroom between her office and Genevieve’s, Jamal went out to Ryan’s office.

The moment he got to the office and introduced himself to Ryan’s secretary, he was ushered into the office.

Ryan who was standing by his office window with his phone raised to his ear, turned to look at Jamal when he walked into the office.

“I see. I’ll call you back,” Ryan said as he hung up, and then focused on Jamal, who was looking around the large office with interest.

“How did the interview go?” Ryan asked him curiously as he went to take his seat behind his desk.

Jamal shrugged, “They didn’t exactly ask any serious questions. I got the job. Thank you, sir,” Jamal said with a polite bow.

Ryan nodded. “Is there anything you’d like to report to me?”

Jamal hesitated, then said, “Ms Abigail seems to think you might have planted cameras or a listening device in her office,” Jamal said, wanting to see if it was true.

Ryan chuckled, “Why would I waste my time planting cameras or anything in her office when I know just how careful she can be? I have more important things to do than something that unproductive. Why did she tell you that, anyway?”

“I went into her office to thank her for the opportunity but she didn’t let me say a word. Also she seems suspicious that I told you her secret. She said she didn’t tell you about offering me the job yet.”

“Let her keep wondering whether or not you told me anything. I like that she is being so careful,” Ryan said with a smirk. “Anything else?”

Jamal nodded. “Yesterday after dropping Mr Jamal off at the airport, Ms Genevieve seemed quite upset and she said she needed a drink. I drove her to a lounge.”

Ryan nodded since he knew that much, “And?”

“When we were there she stepped out to use the ladies’ and while she was away she received a text notification and I checked it. It was from someone who seemed to be blackmailing her,” Jamal said, wanting to see his reaction to that.

Ryan’s eyebrow raised. “Blackmail? Who was it? What does the person have on her?”

“I’m not sure who the person is. The number was saved as Bitch. There were nude photos of a little girl I believe is Ms Genevieve. She was standing next to two equally naked grown up men,” Jamal said, and watching Ryan closely to see if was he was aware of that.

“Was any message attached to it?” Ryan asked with a frown etched between his brows.

“Yes. The person threatened to release the photos if she didn’t take her call or send her some money,” Jamal said, and Ryan narrowed his eyes.

“I’m going to kill that roach,” Ryan swore under his breath before looking at Jamal again.

“Were you able to get the number?” He asked but Jamal shook his head.

“No, sir. She got back before I could,” Jamal said, and Ryan nodded thoughtfully.

“Find a way to get me the number. Do not let Genevieve know that I’m aware,” he said, and Jamal gave him a nod.

“Make sure you let me know all that goes on in that office,” Ryan said before dismissing him.

As Jamal headed for the door, Ryan stopped him, “Pete?”

Jamal stopped and turned to him.

“Keep up the good work,” he said with an approving nod.

“Thank you, sir,” Jamal said before walking away.

As Jamal walked out of the office, he let out a sigh of relief. He was glad that Ryan had not planted anything in Abigail’s office.

It meant her office was a safe spot for them to talk. Still, he was going to wait and hear from Tom’s friend to be absolutely certain that there were no cameras or listening devices there.

Now that he was the secretary and was in charge of their schedules, he could easily find a way to fit in Tom and Lucy’s visit while Genevieve was out.
