Chapter 152: Night Guest
After hanging up the call with her father, Genevieve returned to the office to meet Jamal.

“Let’s go for lunch. I’ll buy you lunch,” she offered with a smile.

She wanted him to take the time to teach her more of the sign language and also so she could talk to him about something.

Jamal shook his head. “Thank you, but no,” he said politely.

Even though he had gotten Abigail’s approval to assist Genevieve, he didn’t think it was okay for him to have lunch with her.

Accepting it because she trusted him didn’t mean that she wouldn’t feel bad if he overdid it. The last thing he wanted to do was to hurt Abigail’s feelings in anyway.

Genevieve’s smile faltered. “Why? Have you had lunch?”

“No. But I don’t think it will be good to have lunch with you. You are my boss. I don’t want people to see us together and get the wrong impression about us. And I don’t want your father to think I’m that close to you.”

“Oh,” Genevieve said, and then nodded. “I understand. It’s alright. Can you do me a favor though?” She asked, and Jamal looked at her hesitantly.

“It depends on what you want me to do. If it’s something I can, I will do it,” he said and her lips twitched.

There was something about the way he spoke and answered questions that made her always feel like she could trust him.

“If my father should ask you about the package Abigail received earlier, can you tell him you sent it?” She asked, and his eyes widened in surprise.

Did Abigail tell her? How did she know?

“Why would I tell him something like that?” Jamal asked in confusion.

Genevieve laughed when she saw the confusion on his face. “Relax. I don’t mean you should say you got it for her. I mean you should tell him I asked you to anonymously send it to her. It’s a gift from me to her, but you helped me send it. Can you do that?” She asked, and Jamal relaxed a bit.

It was easy proving that. But why did Genevieve want him to do that?

“I can. But why? Was the package really from you?” He asked, and Genevieve hesitated, wondering if Abigail would want her to tell the driver about her personal business.

“Yes. It was from me,” Genevieve lied.

“If it was from you why not just say so? Why do you need me to lie and claim you sent it with my help?” Jamal asked, and Genevieve bit her lower lip as she thought about it.

“It’s complicated. Can you just do it? I can’t really explain much. Please do it as a favor to me. I’ll hold you one,” she promised.

Jamal looked at her for a moment and then nodded. “Alright. I will take care of it.”

Genevieve smiled. “Thank you,” she said before heading for the door.

Just as Genevieve walked away, Abigail returned, she stopped by Jamal’s desk when he raised a brow, wondering what her discussion with Genevieve had been about.

Abigail held out a hand to him, and he stared at it in confusion for a moment before Abigail signed, letting him know she wanted his phone.

He handed it to her, and she typed on it. [I forgot to tell you that Ryan changed my phone. He took the hold one and got me a new one. So, I’m being careful with it.] she explained.

Jamal took the phone and typed back. [Were you able to clear up everything important on the phone?]

She nodded and he typed again. [What did Genevieve want?]

Abigail took the phone from him and typed. [She wanted to find out who sent the package. She said Ryan would know I received a package and would want to know who sent it. I told her it was from my boyfriend. She said she was going to claim she sent it to me anonymously.]

Jamal read the text slowly and then he sighed as he reached for it and typed. [I wasn’t thinking straight. I shouldn’t have sent it. That could have caused problems for you.]

Abigail shook her head as she read it and she took the phone and typed quickly, [I’m happy you did. It’s worth any problem I would have faced. Besides, I would have found a way to handle it.]

Jamal looked at her, his eyes filled with worry before he took the phone from her and typed. [I’m not being careful enough. Even talking to you this way here, I think I’m taking too many risks and endangering you. Hopefully I will hear from Tom before the end of the day regarding the plan to hack Ryan’s gadgets.]

[I want to throw caution to the wind and be with you. I’ve lived all my life being careful. Being with you this way, makes it all bearable. So, stop worrying.]

Jamal nodded and then took the phone and typed. [Genevieve wants me to claim I helped her send the package.]

Abigail laughed silently as she took the phone from him and typed. [That’s funny since you really did send it.]

Just as Abigail turned the phone to him so that he could read the text, a call came in from Emily.

She handed the phone to him and then signed this time. [Thanks, Pete. I should go in before my lunch gets cold.]

Jamal gave her a nod and as she walked away, he received the call from Emily.

“Hey, Jamal!”

“What’s up? Have you settled in? Did you call aunt Andy? I’m sorry I didn’t call back to check on you,” Jamal said, and Emilia sighed.

“It’s fine. I know you’re pretty busy over there. Mari’s mom said Mari went to the Island. I’m surprised she left without telling me. Did she tell you she was going there? Do you think that maybe she’s upset because we are both not present for her birthday?” Emily asked as she walked around Callan’s apartment, trying to shake off her boredom.

She wasn’t used to being in such an empty house. As much as she loved the quiet, she didn’t like that she was alone.

She was always either with Mari, or in her house where her younger ones were always up to one mischief or the other.

“I don’t think so. You know Mari. She doesn’t hold grudges that way. Something probably came up. I’m sure she has a reason for going there. Don’t worry about it,” Jamal said confidently.

“Alright. So, tell me about you. What’s going on over there? Give me juicy details,” Emily said excitedly.

“I can’t talk right now. I’m at the office…”

“Office? They have an office for the driver?” Emily asked in confusion.

“I’m the secretary…”

“Jamal please kindly find a good spot to talk. I’m bored out of my mind and you’re the only other person I can talk to now that Mari isn’t here.”

“Callan is there. Talk to him,” Jamal pointed out as he rose to go find a comfortable spot where he could to talk to her.

“He’s not here. He left after dropping me off at the house. I don’t think he’s coming back tonight,” Emily said as her eyes went to the wall clock.

It was past 9 p.m. already.

“Why? Did you both fight?” Jamal asked with a concerned frown as he got into the elevator.

“We didn’t. He said he’s giving me space,” Emily said sounding mildly irritated.

“Did you ask him for space?”

“I didn’t…” she trailed off as she replayed their interaction from the airport all the way home. “I don’t know. I guess I just wasn’t very friendly towards him,” she admitted.

“You weren’t friendly towards your host? Do you realize that Cal is doing you a favor by accommodating you, whether you like it or not? Don’t you think you should be the one making more effort to get along with him right now?” Jamal asked reasonably.

Emily pouted, but before she could respond the doorbell rang. “Someone is at the door.”

“Maybe it’s Cal,” Jamal said when he heard the slight hitch of her voice.

“Why would he use a doorbell in his house when he can just walk in?” Emily asked with a frown as she headed for the door.

“Maybe because he has a female guest in the house and he’s trying to be courteous,” Jamal said, and Emily rolled her eyes.

“Callan is not the type to care about such things,” she said as she went to check who was at the door from the doorbell monitor.

“Callan isn’t as bad as you think. I hope you’d have a better opinion of him by the time you leave there,” Jamal said, feeling the need to defend his friend.

“Besides, is at the door is ringing the bell like a maniac. The only way it can be Cal is if he’s trying to annoy me,” Emily said when the doorbell continued to ring incessantly.

Standing by the monitor, Emily’s brows pulled together in a scowl when she saw a pretty girl who looked like she was in her early twenties standing by the door.

“It’s one of his girlfriends,” Emily said dryly.

“You can just ignore her since he’s not in,” Jamal suggested.

“How am I supposed to ignore her when she’s ringing the bell like she is crazy?” Emily asked as she pressed the speaker.

“Callan isn’t in,” Emily said, startling the girl, who jolted at the sound of her voice.

“I know. He says I should wait for him he’s coming,” the girl said, and Emily sighed.

“Now I’m his housekeeper. I’m supposed to open the door and let his girlfriends in,” Emily muttered to Jamal as she unlocked the door.

“I don’t think you should let anyone in…”

But it was too late. The door was open already and while Jamal was still speaking the girl entered and pounced on Emily.

“So, you’re the bitch who won’t leave my man alone!”
