Chapter 431: What Happened That Day
“She looked miserable, like someone that you just couldn’t leave by herself, else she would fall apart in a moment. That made me pity her in a way, and I spent more time than I wanted to in that house. But I eventually had to leave. I told her to try and take care of herself more, and I left her there. I didn’t think I would ever meet her again. Honestly, I didn’t even remember her after that fight was over. I fought for another full day after that, so she was the last thing on my mind when I was done. But for some reason, she seemed to hold on to that memory since that time. When we met again, she didn’t know I was KING. I can’t really blame her since I had grown a lot since then. She also grew a lot, so I didn’t recognize her either as the girl I met. But when we were fighting those Eldritch, she remembered me when I said something I once said to her before. That was when she figured it out. And then when the fighting was over… she confessed to me.”
Arit’s bared her teeth in anger as a low growl escaped from her mouth. Luna really tried to take away her KING.
“She confessed?”
Mark didn’t react to the intense anger he could hear in Arit’s voice because he understood. If Mark heard that another man even dared to confess to Arit, he would break the bastard in half.
Mark nodded to Arit’s question.
“Yeah, she confessed. She told me she loved me as KING and now as Mark.”
Arit couldn’t believe what she was hearing. Arit knew that Mark was desirable, and she knew that it was impossible for her to try to make every woman in the world keep their eyes away from him just because he was with her. Arit knew women very well because she was also a woman. If Mark had been with another woman when they were just friends, then Arit would have tried everything in her power to get Mark’s attention so that he would love her instead. But that wasn’t the issue here at all!
The issue was the fact that it was Luna who confessed! Arit remembered that conversation she had with Luna earlier about relationships! Luna told Arit that she was not interested in Mark, and Luna was afraid of what the tabloids would say if she tried to pursue a relationship with Mark.
This made Arit see Luna in a new light. It made Arit see her as a true friend that she could confide in and maybe even hang out with as her first female friend.
But this revelation now was enough to destroy all of that in Arit’s mind! It was like the seed of friendship that had been planted there was suddenly uprooted and scorched by fire!
‘That harlot dared to confess to the king! She wants to take him away from us! How dare she! Find her! Find her now and kill her this instant!’
The Queen was raving mad in Arit’s head, and Arit knew that if the Queen had a real body, she would have gone out there to find Luna and kill her already. But Arit calmed the Queen down as she shook her head slightly. Arit was not interested in Luna at all right now. Luna could go to hell for all she cared. Right now, Arit wanted to know…
“…What did you say to her?”
Arit asked this question in a quiet voice that almost went right over Mark’s head. If not for Mark’s super hearing, he might have missed it completely. But he didn’t miss it, and he turned to look at Arit in surprise once he heard the question. Arit was biting her bottom lip in nervousness as she waited with bated breath for Mark to say something.
The truth is that Arit knew Mark loved her. Mark had said he loved her, and he had shown it to her numerous times, so Arit knew this was a fact. But Arit also knew who Luna was. Not only was Luna one of the most beautiful women in the world, but she was also the strongest woman in the Federation of America, as well as the second richest superhuman in America. If Arit were to put herself and Luna on a scale, Arit knew that she would never be able to compete with her! It was not even a contest at all! Luna would beat Arit in every category that mattered!
Could Arit really compete with someone like that? If it was someone like Luna who was after Mark and they really put their feelings out there, what would happen? Would Mark leave her?
When Arit didn’t hear anything from Mark for a few seconds, she finally decided to look at him, and she turned to see the look of disbelief on Mark’s face as he stared at her. Arit’s eyes widened as she saw that look in his eyes, and she slowly looked down while linking her hands on her knees. What the hell had she been thinking!? Why would she ask something so stupid!?
“S-Sorry. I just… I just sob~ I don’t want you to leave me. I know I’m not the most beautiful, and I… I have this scar and all these issues. I-”
Arit brought a hand up to clean her eyes as she felt tears coming out involuntarily. She didn’t mean to say something that stupid. Arit knew that asking a question like that was basically questioning Mark’s love for her. It was like she was saying she didn’t trust him. She brought her hand up to cover the scar on her chin as she felt conscious of it for the first time in more than a year.
Most people would think that Arit would already be assured of her position as Mark’s partner, but they would be forgetting that Arit was only a teenager in high school. At her age, things like appearance were very important to her, and the fear of losing your loved one to someone else that you saw as ‘superior’ was very real. Arit had a lot of issues as a person, and she knew that any one of them would be enough for most men to abandon her for someone else.
Even though Arit knew that Mark was not like most men and he wouldn’t just leave for something like this, she couldn’t help but be worried. It was like a natural reaction for someone to become worried if a more prospective mate appeared in front of their lover.
Arit kept talking, trying to explain herself, but she didn’t expect Mark to reach out and suddenly pull her into a one-armed hug. Arit’s forehead pressed against Mark’s chest, and Mark ran his other hand through her hair softly. He leaned down and put his chin on top of her head with a sigh, and when he spoke, Arit could almost hear the smile in his voice.
“I told Luna the same thing I told you all those months ago. You’re the most important person to me, Arit. No matter who comes up to me telling me they love me. No matter how beautiful they are or how much they try. I’ll never do anything that hurts you. I love you, and no single person is ever going to be able to change that. Do you understand?”
Arit’s eyes were wide in disbelief as she heard Mark’s declaration sinking into her very soul once again. She felt an intense surge of gratitude coming from her heart and threatening to overwhelm her, and she just reached forward to hold Mark’s singlet tight before she nodded into his chest wordlessly.
