Strongest Superhuman System - Chapter 443
Chapter 443: I’ll Be Back, KING
When the prosecutor was finally finished with her address, the judge cleared his throat and spoke up.
“I have listened to both sides, and I can say with certainty that this crime deserves nothing less than suitable punishment. It is… disgusting to have to witness such an act in my lifetime, and for it to have been done by a member of the government is even more deplorable. Ryan, I cannot begin to fathom the twisted nature of your soul that would allow you to perform such acts on the citizens that you swore to protect with your life. The panel of judges will convene and give their verdict, after which I will pass judgment. But before that, is there anything that the defendant would like to say in response to the accusations tallied against him?”
Everyone in the courtroom turned to Salazar. The man was sitting straight up on a bench inside the defendant’s box, and he turned to the judge with a raised brow when he heard the man addressing him.
Salazar’s smile widened when he realized he had the freedom to speak, and he looked around the room with a critical gaze until he finally found what he was looking for: a camera on the far side of the room that had a red light blinking on it to show that it was broadcasting. Salazar’s next words would be the headline on all major newspapers and blogs for the next week straight.
“This is far from the end, so you’d be wise not to let your guard down. Until we meet again, KING.”
The reporters that had been allowed into the room immediately stood up in shock as they all started to shoot questions at Salazar rapidly!
“Did you say, KING? Are you talking about the KING we all know!? The KING who fought the Armageddon!?”
“Who are you referring to!? Salazar, who are you talking to!?”
“Is this KING the same one from four years ago!? Is there a chance that he is alive!? Is there a new KING on the rise!?”
“What are you hiding about KING!? Did you use him for an experiment as well!?”
The more rowdy reporters had to be sent out of the courtroom before they could cause any more chaos, but Salazar just sat back calmly with a smile and waited for the break to start.
Luna’s eyes widened once she heard what Salazar said, and her hand tightened into a fist as she knew that there was only one person that Salazar could be talking about at that moment. So Salazar also knew that Mark was KING. How in the world did he find out?
…
In Mark’s penthouse in the Red Lotus Hotel, Mark was sitting on his couch and leaning forward with his elbows on his thighs as he watched the broadcast of the hearing on television. His eyes were narrowed as he stared at Salazar’s image on the screen, and once Salazar spoke, Mark’s hand tightened around the remote and broke it into pieces.
“… You’d be wise not to let your guard down. Until we meet again, KING.”
Crack!
Jeanne was sitting beside Mark, and she was also shocked when Salazar spoke about KING. But what shocked her even more was Mark’s reaction. She watched as Mark’s entire body radiated bloodlust in his anger. Jeanne looked from the television back to Mark and then back again in surprise as she tried to understand why Mark was so angry. Salazar was talking about KING on the TV, not GHOST, so why was—
‘Hold on for a fucking minute.’
Jeanne’s eyes narrowed as her mind started to put two and two together. She looked towards Mark in shock as a theory suddenly popped into her head. Jeanne was a brilliant woman, capable of very complicated mental gymnastics, so it wasn’t difficult for her to begin piecing together a possibility once she saw Mark’s reaction. There was only one question that replayed in her head over and over again:
Was Mark KING?
‘No, that… that’s not possible. Mark as KING? KING died four years ago. Everyone knows that.’
But no one ever found a body.
Jeanne narrowed her eyes as this thought passed through her head, and she realized she might be right. They never found KING’s body because everyone just assumed it was destroyed in the fight against the Armageddon by his last attack. Jeanne stared at Mark in surprise for a moment before she decided that she would look into this later. She would have asked Mark about it, but she knew that Mark was not in the best mood right now, so he wouldn’t be interested in talking.
Once the intermission began on the television, Mark stood and left the living room.
…
The courtroom finally calmed down after the reporters who were causing a commotion were sent out. They went on a small break to allow the panel of judges to deliberate on what the lawyers had brought up so far. There was no need for the lawyers to bring up any new evidence since they already presented everything in the previous hearing. This particular hearing was only held so that the lawyers could give one last debate on their points for the judges to consider.
The people of America all waited patiently for the final judgment from the judges. Everyone knew how serious the crimes brought against Salazar were, and in the minds of every single citizen, Salazar was already as good as dead. There was very little chance for him to receive anything less than the death sentence after what they had heard.
Luna was standing at the back of the court with Alec while waiting for the judge to return. One of her secretaries came close to her, and Luna gratefully accepted the coffee that the secretary handed to her with a smile. The secretary handed another coffee to Alec, and Alec thanked her with a nod before the secretary left. Luna sighed and took a sip of the drink while looking toward where Salazar had been sitting with a frown. Luna couldn’t believe that Salazar knew who Mark was. Luna was tempted to call Mark and ask him about this. Did Mark tell Salazar himself, or was it something that Salazar found out on his own? And what was the meaning of what Salazar said? Why did Salazar talk like he had some way to get out of this situation?
Luna was very worried about what this could mean for Mark, and she felt like calling him and asking him about this, but she felt awkward about calling him right now. After what they went through in that Eldritch battle, Luna didn’t really want to talk to Mark right now. Not when she had embarrassed herself so much in front of him. A small blush of embarassment rose on Luna’s cheeks and Luna decided that she would wait for some time before calling him.
‘Maybe in a week… or a month.’
