Strongest Superhuman System - Chapter 446
Chapter 446: The Drive
Mark led Luna out of the building, and they both walked to the parking lot on the other side of the compound. Mark’s Vanitas car was parked there, and he opened the passenger seat for her. She smiled nervously before entering the car. Mark then went over to the other side to enter the car as well, but before he entered, he saw a man on the other side of the parking lot taking a video of them entering the car. Mark glared at the man in anger and the man jolted in fear before he quickly averted his eyes and entered his own car to drive off.
“Fucking annoying bastards.”
Mark entered his car, and Luna gave him a look as he sighed and leaned back in the seat while staring ahead. Luna watched Mark closely, noticing how his hands tensed around the steering wheel. There was a crease in his brow and a frown on his face that showed just how annoyed he was at that moment.
Luna felt a little awkward while sitting in the car. It felt strange to be this close to Mark after everything they had been through. Luna had imagined being around Mark a lot since that Eldritch fight, envisioning how their conversations might go many times, but now that she was right beside him, Luna realized suddenly that she didn’t have anything to say at that moment. It felt like her head was blank.
Finally, after what felt like an eternity, Luna decided to just talk. She couldn’t be shy around Mark. They’d been through too much together for her to not have something to say to him.
“Uhm… so how is the Eldritch? You said they haven’t been able to get anything out of it. We’re pouring a lot of money into keeping that thing alive.”
After Mark spoke with the Superhuman Alliance’s deputy director the other day, he started sending money for them to use in maintaining and taking care of the Eldritch he and Luna captured. When Mark sent the first deposit, he was surprised when they sent back half of it and told him that the Moonlight Guild was already covering the other half. Mark knew it was Luna who sent the money, and when he called the guild to ask, the guild’s vice-captain confirmed that it was Luna that sent it but he also said that Luna was not available. Mark could understand why she didn’t want to talk to him then, and he was just glad that she seemed over it for now.
There was still some awkward energy between them, but at least they could talk.
“Yeah, I told them to try using various forms of hallucinogens and drugs to see if it would affect it and make it start talking without restraint, but they haven’t been able to get anything out of it. One of the men down there suggested shock torture since it’s a water creature, and I told them to go ahead with it and tell me how it goes.”
Luna nodded and went silent again. Luna didn’t really have any reason to keep that monster alive, and if she was asked to choose, she would have just killed it and been done with it. But since Mark needed it alive for something, she didn’t mind pouring millions into it.
“During the trial, I was surprised when Salazar suddenly called you out. I didn’t know Salazar knew you were KING. Were you the one who told him about it?”
Mark frowned when Luna asked this question and started the engine while talking.
“No, I didn’t. I’ve only told three people that I am KING, so I have no idea how he managed to find out about me. But if he knows about me, then I can be sure that he isn’t the only one who knows. It’s probably the organization backing him that told him.”
Mark was sure that Salazar was a part of the Syndicate, and for some reason, the entire organization had made it their priority to get rid of Mark. Mark has been trying to figure out the reason behind their hatred for him for a while now, but he hasn’t been able to think of anything. Mark knew he hadn’t done anything that would warrant this much attention from the Syndicate during his time as GHOST, so the only reason they would be coming after Mark like this was because of his actions as KING. And if Salazar knew that Mark was KING, then that meant the entire organization knew.
Mark told Luna to put on her seatbelt, and Luna raised a brow at him in disbelief. Did Mark really think she would get hurt even if they got into a massive accident? Mark gave her a look, and Luna just sighed and put on the seatbelt as Mark started to drive out of the parking lot.
Even though the Syndicate knew that Mark was KING, Mark wasn’t really worried about what they would do with that information. People finding out that he was KING was the least of his worries at this moment, but Mark couldn’t help but be worried about Arit and Talia. The people around him were going to be in danger if the Syndicate ever decided to use them to try and attack him. Mark had already come close to losing Arit and Talia on that island, and there was nothing he could have done about it. And now that the Syndicate knew that S ranks weren’t going to be enough to hurt Arit or Talia, there was a chance that the Syndicate would send stronger opponents next time. If the Syndicate kept trying to attack them, then there would come a time when Arit or Talia would end up getting seriously hurt or even killed before Mark could get there to help them.
Mark’s hand tightened around the steering wheel as anger filled him at the thought, and he had to stop when he felt the steering wheel creaking under the pressure.
“You’re going to break the steering wheel if you keep doing that.”
Luna also noticed Mark’s actions, and Mark just sighed as he turned a corner. He asked her for directions to her house, and Luna told him the quickest way to get there before she leaned back in her seat. Mark drove for a few seconds in silence, and Luna could see the anger still radiating off him, even though Mark was trying his best to control it. Luna asked him a question.
“This organization that is backing Salazar. Do you know who they are?”
“They only call themselves the Syndicate. I haven’t been able to find out anything else about them. I told a friend of mine to do some research, but he hasn’t been able to get anything yet.”
