Chapter 448: I Was Serious About What I Said
Luna was just happy that they could still talk normally. She didn’t know what she would have done if Mark refused to talk to her after her confession. She knew that she would deserve it, but she wouldn’t be happy about it at all. Even before she fell in love with him, Luna felt that Mark was a good friend, someone she could talk to, and that was very important to her. Losing Mark’s friendship would have really hurt.
As Mark drove into a large estate on the upper-class side of City S, his mind once more drifted towards Fiona and what could have happened to her. Mark had been on the lookout for any information about Fiona for a long time now. He knew that Pat was also looking for her desperately, and even Tylor was trying his best to find her using their guild’s contacts, but there hadn’t been any information or news about her since Gunter took her. Mark didn’t like how silent things had been recently. Not only did no one try to come and save Salazar during his trial, but there hadn’t been any major anima attacks in the country since Salazar was captured. People were all celebrating the peace, thinking that this meant the recent surge in calamity class attacks was finally over, but Mark didn’t feel the same.
In fact, the silence only made Mark more tense; it was almost like the calm before the storm.
“I need you to help me keep an eye out for any information on Gunter or Fiona. She was taken when she snuck into the NSA building, and no one has heard from her since. Those contacts you have in the underground, can they help out with this?”
Luna was stunned to hear Mark ask her this. Fiona was missing? Since when? Luna had no idea that Fiona was even a part of the NSA raid. She had only heard that Gunter was working with Salazar and that Gunter escaped capture in the NSA building.
‘No wonder I haven’t heard from the Artemis Guild all this time. I didn’t see Fiona at the trial either, but I just thought she wasn’t interested. They’ve been busy trying to find her.’
Luna nodded as she told Mark that she would tell her contacts to keep an eye out for any information. If Fiona was taken to any of the shady organizations, then she would know about it and tell him before long. Mark thanked her and finally drove up to a large iron gate. There was a man sitting inside a small cubicle at the side of the gate, and he dropped his newspaper and walked up to the car once he saw them.
“Is that you, Madam Luna? I thought your secretary would be bringing you back. Welcome.”
The man greeted Luna respectfully, and then his eyes trailed toward Mark, who was driving. The man’s eyes widened in shock for a second once he saw the both of them together, but he managed to school his features as he just greeted Mark with a nod. What his employer did in her personal time was none of his business.
The man went to press a button, and the button scanned his finger before the gate opened up to grant them access. The area that Mark drove into was humongous. More than five hundred acres of land covered with vast forestry containing various plant life. In the center of all this was a circle of cleared land measuring about fifty thousand square feet, where Luna’s mansion sat. A long line of fountains shaped like angel statues formed a pathway for Mark to drive through to the house, and Mark couldn’t help but be impressed when he noticed that there were many guards of B-rank and above hidden in the forest.
“This looks more like a fortress than a house.”
Luna blushed a little and shook her head.
“I don’t really stay here that much. It’s just for the image it brings to the guild. I mainly sleep at the office where I can go out to help on the battlefield quickly.”
Mark nodded, and he finally stopped in front of Luna’s mansion. There was a maid standing at the door and waiting respectfully for Luna, and Luna sighed as she saw this. Luna didn’t want the journey to end, and she hesitated to even reach for the door handle. Mark spoke up before Luna could think about leaving.
“Thanks for today. Talking with you helped clear my head a little. I’ll be waiting for anything you can find for me.”
Once Luna heard this, she turned to Mark and blushed when she saw him giving her a small smile. It was obvious that Mark was trying his best not to make things awkward between them, but Luna didn’t like it. Luna felt like simply accepting Mark’s words right now would make things go back to a place where she had no chance with him. With her mind made up, Luna leaned over to Mark and gave him a hug.
Mark was surprised by her action, but he didn’t move into the hug. Luna didn’t mind as she just spoke quietly into his ear.
“I meant what I said before, back on the island. I know you don’t want to hurt Arit, and I’ll respect that, but I wouldn’t mind being the second wife. I’ll wait for you to give me an answer, so talk to Arit and see how she feels about it. I won’t try to force myself on you. But please, don’t deny me without even giving it a chance. We can make it work, I know it.”
Luna separated herself from Mark, and quickly reached for the door and left the car before Mark could see the blush on her face. Mark watched her hurry to her door as her maid bowed to her, and just before she entered, she turned around and waved goodbye to Mark shyly.
Mark gave Luna a small smile in return before he drove off.
Mark didn’t try to think too much about what Luna said. He didn’t know how Arit would feel about him having a second woman, but he knew that Queen would definitely be against it. Queen was more likely to try and kill Luna for even bringing up the topic. Mark just shook his head and got rid of those thoughts as he refocused on Salazar and what to do going forward. Mark would think about all that when he wasn’t too preoccupied.
‘I’ll talk to Arit about it when this is all over.’
Mark didn’t like the way Salazar died. The things that Salazar said and how comfortable he was with his own death just rubbed Mark the wrong way. It was obvious to anyone listening that Salazar had a lot of plans in place for Mark, and Mark needed to find out what those were. Mark wasn’t going to just wait around and allow Salazar’s plans to sneak up on him when he least expected it.
Pat was still incognito for now, and Mark knew that Pat was completely occupied with looking for Fiona. Pat blames himself for Fiona’s disappearance, so that was the only thing that would make him go radio silent like this. Finding Fiona would also help in finding Gunter, so Mark decided that he would just allow Pat to keep working on that. The best thing Mark could do now was to try and find out as much about the syndicate as he could.
